RESIDENTS had a direct line to the metro’s ex-ecutive mayor, Danny Jordaan, for their ques-tions over service delivery issues during themayoral outreach at the Nangoza Jebe Commu-nity Hall in New Brighton last Thursday.

It followed a consultation with communitieswhich Jordaan, his mayoral committee and di-rectors had held at theUitenhage TownHall theday before.InNewBrighton, residents heard themunici-

pal senior officials explaining the road travelledandwhat still needed to be done in terms of ser-vice delivery programmes.Speaker Maria Hermans, who was the pro-

gramme director, reminded the audience thatthey were reporting on the work of the munici-pality intheeightmonthsthatJordaanhadbeenat the helm.

THE problem of HIV/Aids and Tuberculosis(TB) infections thatcontinued toaffectpoorres-idents of KwaNobuhle Townshipwho arewith-out proper care and medication, has led to theTreatment Action Campaign (TAC) joining for-ces with local organisations to address this.

TAC and other non-governmental organisa-tions likeAmadodaOkwenene,Section27,LoveLife and Phaphani Rape Crises had a meetingat Jeff Masemola Community hall last Thurs-day to sensitize one another about the challen-ges facing public health andwhat they could doto assist needy communities.According to this coalition, the challenges

facing public health to stem mainly from poormanagement of resources and government’sbudgetary constraints.“We have the problem of our clinics being

without medication for sick patients includingthosewhoareHIVinfected.TherearenoARVs.There are no condoms available in our clinicswhile government preaches ABC to communi-ties,” said Thembisile Nogampula of TAC.Nogampula said it was time for government

to monitor the dispensing of medication if theshortagewasas a result of the clinics’ poorhan-dling of medication.“At Mabandla clinic, for instance, you’d still

see long queues way after 2pm because of theshortage of staff. We want government to in-creasestaffastheirheadcountiswrong,”hesaid.According to Section 27’s Fikile Boyce, their

interaction as NGOs was aimed at creating

ways for their intervention to stop health prob-lems from escalating into a crisis.“We’d also like this forum to collect informa-

tion on emergencymedical services in the lightof the expected report on 2 April from the De-partment of Health in the Province.”Boycesaidhiscoalitionwasnotgoingtoorga-

nise their own International TB Day pro-grammeon24March,butwouldratherbe form-ing part of the campaigns organised by otherorganisations includingNelsonMandelaMetroMunicipality.“This is a very important gathering. It’s

touching on the important issue of the accessi-bility of medication at this time of celebratingHumanRights,” saidSrDineoMokonenyaneofthe Metro Aids Council, adding that they wereworkingtogetherasgovernmentwiththestruc-tures in the coalition, including TAC and Sec-tion 27.“Going forward we need an integrated ap-

proach so that we don’t work past each other,”she said, adding that declarations of the sum-mit to be held must provide a corrective ap-proachinthemanner inwhichhealthproblemswere addressed.“Each organisation has a major role to play.

We also have social problems to address,” saidMokonenyane. She added that therewas a need for the coali-

tion to speak about Orphaned and VulnerableChildren and how they accessed HIV treat-ment, child-headedhomesand theirneed for so-cial security, the elderly who have to look aftertheir grandchildren after their children aswellas other grandchildren died of HIV/Aids.

IN an attempt to reduce the rate of HIV in-fection in KwaNobuhle, the Treatment Ac-tionCampaign(TAC) in theareadistributed11 000 condoms to residents last Thursday.

“Westartedat 9.30amandby11amwehadalready given out 11 000 condoms.” TACleader Thembisile Nogampula said, addingthat they had given them out to young andold residents.Nogampula said they had to explain to

residents that HIV/Aids was a threat totheir health and life as a whole and untilthey took charge of their daily actions theywere about to lose the fight against the vi-rus.“Even the gogos took condoms for their

grandchildren, saying they did not want tobury them because of their failure to dowhat is right, that is, follow the ABC,” No-gampula said.He said that some people, although they

were not involved in sexual relationships,

had however taken the condoms “for just incase something unplanned happens”.“It is sad to say that even elderly women

fear being attacked and raped by unknownassailants in their homes – so offering therapist a condom in a hopeless situationcould save a gogo from HIV infection.”The campaigns to create HIV awareness

would continue unabated, Nogampula said.It was the TAC’s mandate to ensure that

they assisted communities in the fightagainst the disease.Unemployment and alcohol abuse were

still huge problems facing township com-munities, something which Nogampulasaid he believed put paid to attempts to de-crease HIV infection.“We are also having a problem with the

Department of Correctional Services, which releases inmates who are takingARVs and TB treatment for instance, notcommunicating the person’s viral load andwhethersheorhehasXDR,MDRor justpul-monaryTB,whichisnormally treated insixmonths,” Nogampula said.

An opportunity arose to study in Cuba, thanks to the programme initiated by pastpresidentsNelsonMandelaandFidelCastro in1996.Sandiswa jumped at the opportunity that

would to save her pensioner parents fromhav-ing to pay for her studies.Following reports earlier in the year that

some of South African students in Cuba hadturned away from their initial reason to bethere and entered into a life of drugs and alco-hol abuse, while some had started as pastorsandabathandazeli (thosewhopray for others),Nozukile said she was sure that her childwouldnotmessup theopportunityof a lifetimeby engaging in something different from whatshe had set out to do in Cuba.“Sandiswa is focused and dedicated. A LOVE of karate and children led WalmerTownship’s Joshua Mzingelwa to start a clubin the township.

Being without indoor sports facilities andresources, Mzingelwa, of the Airport Valleyinformal settlement, trains about 47 school-children – aged seven to 16 – in the streets andparks, and has been able to produce nationalstars with trophies and medals to show for it.“I am passionate about karate, the sport I

took part in while I was still at school,” saidMzingelwa, who decided to use his skills afterwatching many children loitering in thestreets without anything to do after school.“The manner in which young children

smoke and drink and, worse still, how theydo drugs and crime, forced me to do some-thing,” said Mzingelwa, a member of thestreet committeewhose interests are commu-nity safety and security. He goes around to schools to collect those

interested in the sport and takes them in his

Isuzu bakkie to a nearby field where he givesthem the best gift some children could everhave – the opportunity to take part in sport, win competitions and travel the world.“I started with only 15 children, but now I

have 47 excited participants, 12 of whom arenow national champions,” said Mzingelwa, whose only child lives in the Transkei, wherehe comes from.To ensure that his players were recognised

and assisted with the latest sporting trends, rules and techniques, he had joined SenseiZolile Maxhama’s Kyokushin Karate Club, which is affiliated to the national body.Mzingelwa, who now manages the Walmer

club, said children from the townships are at-tracted to mainstream sports like football, rugby andnetball, but not everybody is tailor-made for those. He said karate had a special ingredient for

self-defence and instilling discipline.“There are no yellow or red cards in kara-

te,” he said, referring to soccer.Participants are taught discipline and that

spills over into how they conduct themselvesin their daily lives.Mzingelwa must take his participants to

the national championships in East Londonfrom March 21 to 23. Winners will take partin an international tournament in the FreeState, from which the road will lead to Indiafor the world championships. He needs R3 000 for their transport and

their participation fees. To assist Mzingelwahe can be contacted at 073 090 6299.
