Chapter 1

Overview

FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition (SE) provides the capability to collect, store, analyze, and visualize data using a powerful engine and a set of reporting tools such as time-series trends, bar charts, pie charts, Pareto charts, tabular trends, and a method of generating reports using Microsoft Excel. It also uses compressed-storage data algorithms to contain a vast amount of data in a small format.

FactoryTalk VantagePoint allows you to explore hidden manufacturing data, including viewing web-based reports and KPI dashboards delivered through the Portal. VantagePoint allows you to integrate information from multiple heterogeneous sources into a single model called the Unified Production Model (UPM). The primary purpose of the UPM is to integrate data from the organization’s many different production data sources, including: sensors, control equipment, man-machine interfaces, maintenance management systems, custom databases, manufacturing execution systems, and business applications. The integration of this data makes it appear as though these diverse and often unrelated systems are part of a single, coherent application.

You can install/upgrade FactoryTalk Historian SE and FactoryTalk VantagePoint in different ways, depending on your computer configuration and the requirements of your environment.

It is recommended that you first use the Help me choose the installation option link on the FactoryTalk Historian SE installation media to learn which option is the best for you. The link starts the Installation Advisor that analyzes your computer configuration and recommends the best installation/upgrade choice.

For details, see "Choose the installation/upgrade option (page 10)".

Chapter 1 Overview

8 Rockwell Automation Publication HSEVP-QR001B-EN-E-February 2017

There are the following options of installing and upgrading FactoryTalk Historian SE and FactoryTalk VantagePoint:

Express installation

The express installation is suitable for new installations. It installs FactoryTalk Historian SE and FactoryTalk VantagePoint onto a newly deployed computer during one installation process. It should be considered only for small Historian applications with less than 5000 tags.

It also installs Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition.

In this option, all components are installed on the same computer.

For details, see "Express installation (page 13)".

Advanced installation/upgrade

The advanced installation is suitable, if you want to:

• Create a Historian collective on two different computers.

• Use an existing SQL Server instance with FactoryTalk VantagePoint or FactoryTalk Historian Asset Framework other than the one provided with FactoryTalk Historian SE.

• Use applications greater than 5000 tags and building out the Asset Framework model.

In this case SQL Server Standard Edition rather than Express should be used.

• Install FactoryTalk Historian Asset Framework Server in other mode than default.

• Install individual components (Internet Information Services (IIS), FactoryTalk Historian SE Server, FactoryTalk Historian Asset Framework Server, SQL Server Express, or FactoryTalk VantagePoint) on separate computers.

Overview Chapter 1

Rockwell Automation Publication HSEVP-QR001B-EN-E-February 2017 9

• Install the components to a drive other than the default operating system drive (usually drive C).

• Upgrade the components that are already installed on your computer in a previous version and you can't upgrade them using the express upgrade option.

In this option, FactoryTalk Historian SE and FactoryTalk VantagePoint are installed during separate installation processes.

For details, see "Advanced installation/upgrade (page 23)".

Express update

The express upgrade is suitable for a computer on which the previous version of FactoryTalk Historian SE and FactoryTalk VantagePoint were installed using the express installation option and all the components installed at that time still exist on the computer.

It upgrades FactoryTalk Historian SE and FactoryTalk VantagePoint to the latest version during one upgrade process.

In this option, all components are installed on the same computer.

The configuration remains unchanged during the upgrade. The process consists only of upgrading the installed components to newer versions. The SQL database is not upgraded.

NOTE The SQL Express database may get upgraded when you didn't follow the Advisor's recommendation and you run the express installation rather than the recommended advanced installation.

The express upgrade is not supported if the FactoryTalk Historian SE and FactoryTalk VantagePoint components were installed using other installers than the express installation option version 4.00.01.

For details, see "Express upgrade (page 21)".

Chapter 1 Overview

10 Rockwell Automation Publication HSEVP-QR001B-EN-E-February 2017

The FactoryTalk Historian SE Installation Advisor is a tool that helps you select the best installation or upgrade option on the computer on which you are running the Advisor, based on the computer's analysis gathered by the Advisor and your replies to the Advisor's questions.

Run the Advisor only once, before you run any specific installer on the FactoryTalk Historian SE installation media.

Once you run the installer recommended by the Advisor, and the installation is disrupted for some reason, start the installation again using the exact installer recommended by the Advisor, with which the installation was started for the first time.

To run the FactoryTalk Historian SE Installation Advisor:

1. Run the FactoryTalk Historian SE installation media.

The installation wizard window appears.

2. On the main page, click Help me choose the installation option.

The FactoryTalk Historian SE Installation Advisor is launched.

It performs a preliminary analysis of the computer and then, depending on the analysis result, displays relevant information.
