2017 INSTITUTE SCHEDULE

- Marie Capizzi

I have participated in a lot of workshops,

retreats, and adventures on my personal

journey, only to say that the Institute was

one of the most significant and dynamic

experiences of my life because, through the

non-threatening explorations in art,

music, poetry, movement, writing, drama

and ritual, I felt loved, appreciated,

listened to and celebrated so I could cross

thresholds on many levels to gain practical

skills, a broad community, and a deepened

connection to Spirit.

Workshop DescriptionsIntroduction and OrientationCamille Smith, July 31 – 9 a.m. -NoonAs we open the Institute we will come together as a community to build the foundation for what is to come.

Intentions and Aspirations for the Self and Community Camille Smith – July 31 – 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.Participants engage in the Open Studio Process as developed by Pat B. Allen of creating intention, making art, and engaging in witness dialoging with their imagery. Intentions for self, community, and the Institute will emerge and guide the experience of the journey to come; creating a bridge that carries through to our closing. This process serves as a foundation for interactions between each individual and their art as well as sets the standard for non-judgmental, non-analytical encounters with all that is created within the overall Institute program.

Art as Contemplative Practice: Excavating the Ineffable Michael A. Franklin – August 1-3 – 9a.m. – 4p.m.Expressive relationships to contemplative traditions are examined in this course. As research on meditation, yoga, and compassion exponentially increase each year, art therapy, too, deserves a place at this table of historical and contemporary ideas. Through studio-based projects, we will synthesize contemplative relationships between art materials and processes as they relate to yoga and meditation practices.

This is Your Brain on Wholehearted Living: Courage, Compassion, Connection and Creativity Camille Smith– August 4-5, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Friday & 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Saturday During this 2 day workshop we will synthesize the wisdom of Brene Brown (The Gifts of Imperfection) and Rick Hanson, ( Buddha’s Brain and Hardwiring Happiness). Using creative and contemplative methods we will practice instilling the attitudes which contribute to a life filled with meaning and joy. With the power of intention and mindfully focused attention as resources we will explore methods for rewiring our brains for positive change and overall well being. The role of gratitude and compassion will figure prominently as we cultivate curiosity and wonder and engage in sacred play in a multi-modal expressive arts field. Applications for work with clients will be explored.

Saturday August 5 – Yoga and Meditation, 9 - 10 a.m.

Love Letters to our Selves, Monoprinting without a pressKat Kirby, August 6, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. • Simple and fun • Instant gratification • Cool prints • What more could you ask?During our restorative half-day session, we will learn how to create stencils using hot glue guns and our original designs. Then, working with a variety of paints and papers using Gelli® printing plates, bubble wrap, string, and other found objects, we will be creating papers that can be used in many different art projects.Once we have finished printing, it will be time to write ourselves a love letter, using card stock and our original, colorful papers. This workshop is certain to put a smile on your face, and a sense of well being in your soul.

The Rhythms and Stories of our Lives: 5Rhythms® & Motion Theater® Davida Taurek – August 7-9, 9a.m. – 4 p.m.Put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. — Gabrielle Roth Experience the freedom and transformative power of self-expression through the catalytic practices of the 5Rhythms and Motion Theater. Motion Theater, a form of improvised autobiographical storytelling grounded in a lively physicality, simultaneously functions as performance art, healing method, and spiritual practice. The 5Rhythms is a dynamic moving meditation practice that invites us to embody our psyche and awaken our soul. Together we will dance, vocalize, share our stories, and play simple theater games that ignite the creative collective spirit. The skills and tools you will learn will inform your daily life, bringing acceptance, grace, and play wherever you need it. No previous movement experience required. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a journal/sketchbook.

Visual Journaling for Self-Care and Self-Reflection Cathy Malchiodi, August 10 -12, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. SaturdayThe expressive arts open us to new possibilities for not only personal change, but also community transformation on a larger scale. During this three-day workshop participants will explore the connections between creative expression and resilience, compassion, gratitude, altruism and hope through individual process and group collaborations. We will also use our own “art-based research” capacities to identify how these approaches support personal and community transformation and how expressive arts can manifest the “greater good” in each of us and within society. This workshop will also provide an introduction to the positive psychology concepts that form the core of Trauma-Informed Expressive Arts Therapy.

Yoga and Meditation - Saturday August 12, 9 - 10 a.m. The Creative BridgeCamille Smith, Sunday August 13 – 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.As we bring the Institute to a close, the rich learning, the development of skills, the inspiration leading to action, is integrated. Conscious cultivation of gratitude will inform our reflection and integration of the many gifts received throughout the Institute. Using a variety of creative modalities, we will honor the individual and collective experience of Institute participants and ground the learning for personal and professional practice in the future.
