Subject matter: Who is the subject of the work and what do you think their expression or mood is? Can you

find out what the relationship is between the sitter and the artist? Does the title of the work give you any clues about what the mood or meaning of the piece might be?

Media, Techniques & Processes: What media, techniques or processes does the artist use to create the work? How do these devices contribute to the mood, meaning or expression communicated?

Composition: What is the pose of the sitter/subject of the piece? Is eye-contact made between the viewer

and the sitter/subject? What is the layout of the piece? What is the focal point? What is a viewer’s eyes drawn to and why? How do all these devices contribute to the mood or expression communicated?

Colour: How could you describe particular colours within the artwork (point out specific areas, and use

adjectives such as ‘murky,’ ‘bright,’ ‘soft,’ ‘harsh’ etc.)? Are there any particularly dominant colours, unnatural

colours, or exaggerated colours? How do individual colours, or the colour palette as a whole, contribute to the communication of a mood?

Tone: Are there any particularly light or dark areas in the artwork? Are particular features exaggerated by

the artist’s use of light and/or dark tone? How does the use of tone contribute to the communication of a mood or meaning within the piece?

The subject of the work is five women with straight faces showing little emotion. The mood of the piece is difficult to catch because the artist has purposefully left out a sense of emotion. The women all seem to be of a similar age and don’t seem to be wearing any visible clothing, however this isn’t what you focus on. The attention is drawn to the faces of the women due to the detail and almost judging expression instead of their lack of clothing. I chose the piece because of the simplicity the technique has achieved. The artwork seems to have been done digitally. This gives the piece a different feel to traditional hand done artwork because digital work allows for a whole new range of textures and techniques to be employed which gives the piece a unique feel. The piece is composed very symmetrically and all of the women depicted in the artwork make eye contact with the viewer and physical eye contact with the viewer. The viewer is drawn into the eyes of the women. This creates a connection between the piece and the viewer and entices the viewer to try and discover more about any little messages the piece might have. The colours seem limited in that each woman in the piece has their own main skin colour and subsequent hair colour. However if you look closer, in each woman there are lots of smaller extra colours. In the variation in glasses and lip colour as well as the different colours used to shade. When this is combined in one piece there is a whole new depth given in the little details of the piece. The background is white and blank which allows the viewer to focus on the subject matter of the women. The texture of the piece is very smooth and also looks a little flat, which has been created by little tonal differences. I think this is intentional because the artist is trying to give the piece a simplistic feel. The lines of the piece are very fluid, the bodies are shaped by fluid curves and there aren’t any straight lines in the piece which causes the viewer’s vision to flow around the piece.I love the simplistic feel of the piece and the way that colour is used to show difference between the different women, and also the little subtle colour shifts and changes. This is something I would be really interested in replicating in some of my own work.

The mood of the work is very dark as the subject matter displays death but the mood isn’t negative. It feels more like a display that even in death there is beauty and this gives the work a powerful quality as the style is bold and stands for itself. I have selected this piece because I love the amount of detail the artist has used to create the piece as well as the dark and sinister nature that surrounds the piece.

This is an etching which is a printmaking technique. As a result the work has come out with a very dark feeling.

The piece is composed so that the skull is the only thing in the work so that the viewer is allowed to look more closely at the subject matter of the piece. The skull fills the page and this adds to the powerful image the piece portrays, because of the scale of the piece, the intricate detail that makes up the artwork is easily visible and makes the piece appear more realistic.

The etching is done in simple black and white with shades of grey. This is so the artist can keep a dark look, because of the colour scheme detail is allowed to come through and be the main focus for the artwork.

The tone in the piece is what gives it such a powerful look. By the varying levels of light and dark it allows certain parts of the work to stand out massively. The tone is what really sets the mood for this artwork.

The artist has shaped the work to make it stand out, with a fluid circular left side and a jagged sharp lined jaw and eyes. This contrast gives a very dramatic feeling to the piece.

I love the detail and the overall darkness of the piece as well as the way shadow is used to lift certain parts of the piece.

The subject is a woman smoking. She has a relaxed expression on her face that gives the work a calm air. The woman is composed in the position rather as you would see in a classic 50’s pinup. The message of the piece seems to be an expression of simple beauty. The piece looks like something that could be used in advertising, probably for fashion due to the way the piece is composed and what is actually in the piece. I chose this example because I love how the colour is used and how eye-catching the composition is.

The piece has been painted with watercolours which allows a great difference in tone while at the same time rooting the piece in one main colour scheme. This is one of the things that gives the work a simplistic style and feeling which flows with the message of the piece.

The woman is looking straight at the viewer which catches the viewer’s attention and draws them in. This gives the viewer a morepersonal experience as if the piece is speaking directly to them.

The colour palette is very simplistic mainly monochromatic with grey being the main element used in different shades and tones. This shapes the piece and adds to the mood. The simplicity that using a single tonal quality brings gives the relaxed message that the artist is trying to capture and convey. The other colour used is red which gives almost a centre point for the eye to be drawn to and gives a striking contrast to the grey.

The whole piece is formed from different tones. The artist uses lighter and darker shades of grey to give the piece a more three -dimensional feel. The tone is also very important because clear line isn’t used to outline the whole piece leaving spaces for the viewer’s imagination to fill in the gaps.

Not much texture is conveyed in the piece as the clothing is simply done however the hair of the woman has a flowing texture.

I love the way that the piece all stems from a black base and due to the way the watercolour has been applied shows a massive tonal shift has been made with the different shades of grey in the piece. This technique is something I would love to replicate in my own

work because of the way that the piece flows throughout while being rooted in a single colour.
