Extensions to services

• Access and authentication

• RIDING Access Policy

• Inter-Library Loans

Page 16: Extensions to library services through the RIDING Z39.50 Gateway Peter Stubley University of Sheffield Library

Access and authentication

• Free access; but authentication for ‘value-added’ services

• Different ATHENS3 implementations across consortium members

• Gateway authentication a pragmatic, immediate way forward

Page 17: Extensions to library services through the RIDING Z39.50 Gateway Peter Stubley University of Sheffield Library

Access Policy (RAP)

• A brand new agreement, resulting out of RIDING

• Free access and borrowing to researchers in all academic and public RIDING libraries

• RIDING Access Card

Page 18: Extensions to library services through the RIDING Z39.50 Gateway Peter Stubley University of Sheffield Library

Inter-Library Loans

• Software provides a direct link between search and request activities

• Potential problems with– User eligibility – Holdings information, particularly for

distributed library services– Existing installed ILL systems– RIDING as a project

• Relations with BLDSC

Page 19: Extensions to library services through the RIDING Z39.50 Gateway Peter Stubley University of Sheffield Library

VDX advantages

• ISO ILL Protocol (ISO 10160/1)

• Automatic messaging for all ILL processes

• Tracking at each process stage

• Management of items supplied

• Automatic routing

• Ability to use non-standard e-mail formats

Page 20: Extensions to library services through the RIDING Z39.50 Gateway Peter Stubley University of Sheffield Library

Where do we go from here?

• RAP to be ratified in next few weeks

• ‘Quiet’ roll-out from August 1999

• Full operational service from October 1999

Where do we go from here?

• RAP to be ratified in next few weeks

• ‘Quiet’ roll-out from August 1999

• Full operational service from October 1999

• Evaluation, particularly end-user reactions

• Inter-clumping

• A broader vehicle within the YHUA

• Document delivery/direct end-user charging

What did RIDING ever do for us?

• Co-operation and working together for the common good

• Preparation of an access policy across the region for the benefit of all researchers

• Exploring pro-active interlending

• Continuing good relations with BLDSC

• Exploring cross-sectoral links
