2. INITIATIVES TO STRENGTHEN LIVESTOCK VALUE CHAINS (LVC) FOCUS: EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTS
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 14
NEEDS-DRIVEN CURRICULUM (*LVC CAPTURED*)
INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT (HUMAN, PHYSICAL)
COMMUNITY- AND PRODUCT-GUIDED LVC DEVELOPMENT
COLLECTION AND PRESERVATION OF LIVESTOCK GENETIC RESOURCES
(LIVE & PRESERVED GENE BANKS….INDIGENOUS & EXOTIC)
ESTABLISHMENT OF REFERENCE FACILITIES
Diversity of Livestock breeds
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 15
FOCUSED CAPACITY BUILDING, RESEARCH & OUTREACH ON LVC“Mitigate CC and droughts”
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 16
1) Community capacity building on market-oriented LVCs.
ADAPPT Training Community group
Targeted capacity building of
farmers/groups… harnessing
indigenous knowledge &
technologies for animal health
management
2) Livestock Value Chain Development (Specialists)
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 17
Example of Dairy VC (Uganda)
3) Community-based livestock improvement programs
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 18
Economic empowerment of Extensive Livestock Systems
**Investment in localized (community) livestock improvements
4) Promotion of “Systems Approach” to link Extensive Livestock Production Systems with existing food and commodity value chains
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 19
This should be nested within the prevailing socioeconomic,
policy, business and political environments
Consider Breed, Product lines (Value addition) & Markets as
critical for the success the target LVCs.
5) As a matter of priority, Extensive Livestock VC development programs should focus on:
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 20
a) Community-level interventions with “ market-oriented approach” and “linking farmers with markets”. This should be backed by appropriate technical training on quality extensive livestock breeding, feed formulation and preservation, animal health management and entrepreneurial skills.
b) Commodity Value Chains Approach….Demand for better quality livestock products driven by specific market / consumer segments
c) Integrating agricultural research and extension services to provide quality technical advice and affordable solutions to farmers and other LVC actors.
Contd
05/11/2015 EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK EXPO: MIFUGO NI MALI 2015 21
c) For extensive livestock producers, with limited options to invest in alternative improved practices and technologies, focus on animal production, health management and marketing.
d) Research Investments on cost-effective technologies and viable business models to support adoption, e.g.
- Harnessing local feed resources- Forage crops adaptation research- cost-effective feed formulations & preservation- Conservation & preservation of genetic resources
In Conclusion, EU is keen to partner on:1. Research & outreach initiatives: commodity
based enhanced VCs esp. LVCs (Seeds of Gold: Print & TV series).
2. Capacity building through targeted student attachments/internships, community- and specialist-level trainings,
3. Establishment of an active “farmer-academia-student-industry” interactive platforms
4. Conservation & preserv. of genetic diversity5. Establishment of genetic reference facilities &
