4 Easy Steps to Install1. Lay the right and left sill pan ends tightly against

the rough opening.2. Check center section for proper length, if necessary

cut with a hacksaw or tin snips.

3. Liberally coat both ends of the center section and the rightand left recessed areas of the end pieces with PVC cement.Position and hold for approximately one to five minutes,making sure of good bond. (Bonding time will vary dependingon outside temperature).

4. Install door.

EXTERIOR FINISHING FOR WOOD DOORSStain-And-Clear FinishThe first coat should be stain/sealer, acombination of stain and sealer, which colors thedoor and seals the surface. It is available in a widerange of colors. The stain/sealer should have analkyd-resin base. Under no circumstances shoulda lacquer-based toner or any other lacquer-basedfinish be used on exterior doors.

The second and third coats (two top coatsminimum) may be a solvent-borne (oil-based,alkyd resin-base, polyurethane resin-base) or awater-borne (latex resin-base) clear finish.

Paint FinishEither oil-based or latex resin-base exterior gradepaints may be used with success on panel doors.Oil-based paints offer more resistance to thepassage of water (liquid and vapor) than latexresin-base paints, but the latter have betterdurability and color retention.

Doors should be sealed with a good quality oil-based primer followed by two top coats of either anoil-based or latex resin-base paint. Of course, bothprimer and top coat should be made by the samemanufacturer and be designed to be used as a combination.

Maintenance1. In the event that the door is scratched after

finishing, the damaged area can be lightlysanded using 220-grit sandpaper (do notover-sand the surface). Follow the stainingand top-coat procedures.

2. Dirt and watermarks can build up on thesurface of your finished door over time.Extend the life of the stain and top-coat bycleaning the door several times a year. Cleanwith warm soapy water, rinse and towel dry.

3. A minimum of two coats of top-coat areinitially required for complete protection. Thedoor system should be resealed every 1 to 2years depending upon weather exposure.

HOW TO PAINT STEEL &FIBERGLASS EXTERIOR DOORSSteel doors should be wiped clean with a solventsuch as acetone or mineral spirits. Allow thecleaning solvent to dry completely until there isno residual odor. Once wiped clean, the doormust be lightly sanded with a 220-grit sandpaper.After sanding, the door must be washed with amild detergent in warm soapy water, rinsed andthen dried.

Fiberglass doors should be wiped clean with asolvent such as acetone or mineral spirits. Allowthe cleaning solvent to dry completely until thereis no residual odor. Next, the door must bewashed with a mild detergent in warm soapywater, rinsed and then dried.

Mask (tape) off all surfaces that will not bepainted including all glass.

Painting the DoorUse exterior, high quality, oil-based or 100%acrylic water-based latex paint of desired color.High quality interior paint can be used on theinterior surface of the door only. Follow themanufacturer’s instructions for paint applicationby using a brush or a handheld sprayer.

Sealing or applying the top-coatThe top-coat for your door is very important andrequired for weatherability. It protects the staineddoor from the elements and makes the surfacewashable. Be sure that the stain coating iscompletely dry and then apply a high-quality, UVstabilized, clear exterior polyurethane coating (satinor low gloss) used for any normal exterior woodapplication.

Warning: Doors painted with dark colors or withattached storm doors, may become very hot to thetouch in direct sunlight. Do not paint the weatherstrip and do not close door until paint is dry (seepaint manufacturer’s specifications on minimumdrying time). To maintain product warranty: Paintthe door, frame, header and brickmould within 45days of installation.

Maintenance:1. In the event that the door is scratched after

Important Note:We require that all 6 surfaces (front and backfaces plus all four edges) be sealed to eliminate moisture absorption.The bottom of your door pan(s) may contain a factory installedweather stripping (sweep) which is sealed prior to installation. Failureto observe this recommendation will void the warranty from most manufactures.

Annual inspection is key toa long lasting door.
