Cherina Tinio: A model for new Nursing generation

By: Roxainne Kaye Ritual

“A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him”. -David Brinkley

According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the Philippines generate 200,000 Nursing graduates per year whilethere are only 2,500 available nursing jobs awaits them. Pinoy Nurses are now encouraged to work abroad rather than serve the country first. One of the MTC’s nursing graduates who struggled to find a job abroad was Cherina Tinio a 1979 Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She recently awarded as 2011 Advance Practice Nurse of the Year bestowed by National Award Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA). She is also the present president of Philippine Nurses Association of Northern California (PNANC), PNANC is partnering with Sagip Kapamilya sa Amerika (SKSA) which provided the certified instructors for the practical institution. “The SKSA program is a story of compassion and collaboration,” said PNANC President Cherina Tinio. “PNANC is thrilled to have partnered with ABS-CBN Foundation USA and the American College of Nursing in helping pave the pathway for our graduates to a rewarding career. I’m also grateful to all PNANC volunteer instructors who gave their time and talent to make this pilot program a success.” The program aims to help those who have recently lost their jobs by offering free scholarships towards a CNA license. Last May 15, 2009, they produced the first batch of CAN graduates.

Tinio finished her Masters degree on Nursing at San Francisco State University, San Francisco, California on August 2002. Currently she is the Clinical Coordinator and Nursing Supervisor Veterans Administration at Menlo Park California. As a Clinical Nursing Supervisor she works in Medical Psychiatry and Dementia Unit. One of her task is to develop various programs for the unit age specific such as Traumatic Injured patient, fall tracking, appropriate footwear evaluation, and pressure ulcer prevention.

She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital, San Francisco, CA. from 1990-1991. As she exerts effort in her job, she became the Nursing Supervisor for the Relief Assistant Director of Nursing at Hillhaven from 1995- 1998 at Victorian Facility, San Francisco. From 1993- 1998 she became a Registered Nurse, a Team Leader and Charge Nurse at the Laguna Honda Hospital & Rehabilitation, San Francisco, CA.

Here, she acts as a team leader and charge nurse to licensed vocational nurses, nurses’ aides, and unit clerk. She promoted as Nursing RAI Specialist from 1998- 2003. Her excellence leads her to gain several awards like Certificate of Appreciation for participation in the Balikturo held at Cebu last January 6, 2010. She also nominated as a recipient of Nursing Excellence Award at VA Palo Alto Health Care System last May 2007. She also acquired her certificate of accomplishment for Clinical Nurse Specialist at Menlo Park on May 2010.She also worked on several conferences on curriculum development namely, NOVA Educational Conference held at Crowne Plaza, Milpitas, CA on January 23, 2010. She also presented her Heel Project at San Francisco, VA Hospital on May 22, 2009.She also published an article on several newsletters like NOVA Newsletter Winter Edition last March 2010, and in TORCH Newsletter Winter Edition, 2009.

All of her achievements in her life are the result of fruitful years in her work combined with her skills, strengths and commitment to her job. May she be a very good example to the new batch of nursing graduates here in the Philippines. All of her sleepless nights of studying and the sky-rocketing tuition fees spent by her parents each semester for four years are very worth it.
