    What Are ExtremeAdaptations?

Adaptation to extremes encompasses all thespecial behaviors and physiologies that living

things need to withstand the planet's harshestconditions and environments. Whether it's a lackof oxygen at altitude, the searing heat of desertsor the bitter cold of the polar regions, plants, animals and other organisms have evolved amultitude of coping strategies.

They can be dependent upon various factors ofthe area. Like the climate, the atmosphere, theland, the environment, etc.

    Extreme Adaptions In Reptiles

Reptiles need to actively regulate their bodytemperatures, preventing lethal extremes .

And some are well adapted to the surfacethey live onwith modified appendages forborrowing or the capacity to run on, diveinto/swim in or side wind across loose sand.

    The Banded Gecko

Nocturnal reptiles such as the bandedgecko and most of the snakes adapt to the

conditions around them by exchangingheat with air and soil.

    Desert Tortoises

Desert tortoises, for example, have a large

urinary bladder that can store over 40% of the

tortoises body weight in water, urea, uric acidand nitrogenous wastes for months until they are

able to drink. Ureters are separated from water

and can be eliminated in solid form, freeing

water and ions to be reabsorbed. During

extended droughts while the tortoises areinactive, they can reabsorb minerals from their

shells to use in their metabolic processes.
