Edition 9 March 5, 2019
Finishing our historical fictional novel, A Long Walk
to Water by Linda Sue Park. We discovered how
two characters from two time periods and tribes
of Sudan connected at the end. This story was
based on the real challenges refugee Salva Duvat
faced and then grew up to become a leader of
change and human rights.
Starting a new read aloud book called Finding
Serendipity by Angelica Banks.
Took a Unit Test related to factoring and division
concepts that went home before February
vacation.
Reviewing strategies for multi-digit multiplication
and division.
Reviewing the concepts and models for fractions.
Working with equivalency in fractions and
strategies for calculating equivalent fractions for
adding, subtracting and simplifying.
Every Early Bird work time, at the start of the day,
we continue to do warm-up review problems in
concepts and fact fluency practice.
A group of eight students have started a Math
Challenge Lunch group on Thursdays.
Performed three creative and informative talk
show episodes showcasing our reading, speaking
and listening skills.
Started our historical fiction reading experience
using a series by Kate Messner called Ranger in
Time. To get ready for the reading experience, we
watched trailers for these books with one narrated
by the author.
Groups of 2 or 3 are reading one of the 7 Ranger in
Time books. Each group has copies of the book for
each member and informational texts that connect
to the history. Some groups are reading together
and others are reading individually and then
checking in to talk at agreed points in the book.
I have created a game board to engage students
reading different books in the series to share what
they are noticing and understanding from their
historical fiction genre reading.
Worked with context clues task cards to practice
our skill of determining meaning for vocabulary.
Working on animal research for our informational
essay writing on species characteristics and
habitat.
To all the families that supported costume and prop preparation at home for our biographical guests.
To the Swedberg family who donated a Word Study game and gift card for getting classroom snacks during the Valentine/Healthy Heart week.
Continue emptying out home/school
folders and checking planners daily.
