• Spill kits - emergency kitsshould be available and thestaff should be trainined in their use.

Storage

• Bulk tanks - should be bunded and labelled correctly.

• Measuring devices should becalibrated and service regularly.

• Barrels - should be stored in a bunded area and laid on theirside to prevent moisture entry.

• Pack storage - should be secure and well ventilated - it may also be necessary to control the temperature to keep certain fluids.

• Drains - ensure drains locatedin any storage areas are not connected to external drains, sewer or water course.

• Display appropriate warning signs.

Hygiene

• Avoid unnecessary contact withnew or used oils - use personalprotective equipment.

Flash PointThe flash point is the lowest temperature at which the vapor of acombustible liquid can be made toignite momentarily in air, as distinctfrom fire point. There are a number of ASTM testsfor flash point, e.g. Cleveland opencup, Pensky-Martens closed tester,Tag closed tester, Tag open cup.

Flash point is an important indicator of the fire and explosionhazards associated with a petroleum product.

NLGIThe “National Lubrication GreaseInstitute” established a simplifiedsystem for rating the consistencyof grease (see table on the left).

Pour PointThe pour point is the lowest temperature at which an oil isobserved to flow, when cooledunder conditions prescribed bythe test method ASTM D 97. The pour point is 3°C (5°F) above the temperature at whichthe oil in a test vessel shows nomovement when the container isheld horizontally for five seconds.

TBNThe Total Base Number is theweight in milligrams of acid, expressed in equivalentmilligrams of KOH (potassiumhydroxide), to neutralize all basicconstituents of one gram of oil.Test Methods are ASTM D 664(potentiometric method) or ASTMD 974 (colorimetric method).

DensityThe density of a petroleum product is defined as mass perunit volume, usually expressed as kilograms litre (kg/l).

ρ = m t/m3; kg/dm3; kg/I; g/ml; kg/m3v

The density is also used for the determination of the oil mass or pump power, in terms of lubrication performance it has only minor significance.

Dropping Point The dropping point is the lowest temperature at which agrease is sufficiently fluid to drip,as determined by test methodASTM D 566 or D 2265. It is an indication of whether a grease will flow from a bearing at operating temperatures. The test is of limited significancein predicting overall service performance.

Technical remarks/measurement methods

Page 55: ExxonMobil Product Data Guide 2005 (v.2)

55

Penetration (worked)Penetration is reported as thetenths of a millimetre (penetrationnumber) that a standard cone, acting under the influence ofgravity, will penetrate the greasesample under test conditionsprescribed by method ASTM D217. Standard test temperature is 25°C (77°F). The higher thepenetration number, the softerthe grease. Worked penetration is the penetration of a sampleimmediately after it has beensubjected to 60 double strokes of a standard grease worker.

Viscosity - Overview

ISO VGThe ISO Viscosity Grades are an international system approvedby the International StandardsOrganization (ISO) for classifyingindustrial lubricants according to viscosity. Each ISO viscositygrade number designation corresponds to the mid-point of a viscosity range expressed in centistokes (cSt) or mm2/s at40°C. For example, a lubricantwith an ISO grade of 32 has a viscosity within the range of 28.8 - 35.2 cSt, the mid-point of which is 32.

SAE Viscosity Grades for Engine Oils1

NOTE: 1 cp = 1 mPa•s; 1 cSt = 1mm2/s.1 All values are critical specifications as defined by ASTM D 3244 (see text, Section 3).2 ASTM D 5293.3 ASTM D 4684 (See also Appendix B and text, Section 4.1): Note that the presence of any yield stress detectable by

this method constitutes a failure regardless of viscosity.4 ASTM D 445.

a Centipoise (cp) is the customary absolute viscosity unit and is numerically equal to the corresponding SI unit of millipascal-second (mPa•s).

b Centistokes (cSt) is the customary kinematic viscosity unit and is numerically equal to the corresponding SI unit ofsquare millimeter per second (mm2/s).

c The precision of ASTM Method D 2983 has not been established for determinations made at temperatures below -40°C; consequently, this fact should be realised in any producer-consumer relationship. It is expected that ASTM will shortly undertake work in the range down to -55°C for D 2983.
