Eye Injury Prevention Month
October-Eye Injury Prevention Month
• October is celebrated as eye injury prevention month.
• It is organized by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to increase awareness on prevention of eye injuries.
Eye Injury
• Every year 94,000 US adults lose their eyes due to injury.
• Eye injury may happen at any place - be it at home, at work or during sports.
Prevent Eye Injury at Home
• Your eyes may get injured while cooking food, cleaning, dusting and repairing.
• At the time of opening champagne bottles during any celebration, the risk of an eye injury is considerably high.
• When you are drilling a wall during repair work, your eyes may get injured.
• Wear a protective eyewear while you are working at home. A protective eyewear prevents about 90 percent of eye injuries.
Prevent Eye Injury at Work
• Everyday about 2,000 US workers suffer from eye injuries at work. Maximum of these injuries happen due to particles abrading from the machine to the eye.
• Chemical burns from splashes of industrial chemicals.
• Welders also get their eyes injured by ultraviolet rays radiation.
• You can protect your eyes at work place by wearing goggles, face shields, safety glasses or full face respirators.
Prevent Eye Injury During Sports
• A major number of eye injuries take place during sports.
• About 6 million eye injuries happen every year during sports and one-third of this happens among children.
• Wear specified sports eye gear during sports, be it safety goggles or eye guards.
