Hello, everyone! It’s been a
couple of weeks since we
last had an issue of the
newsletter. There has just
been so many new aspects
that we are developing for
you, our members, that it’s
been a whirlwind of devel-
opment recently!
Our website (www.aghs.cc)
has two webmasters taking
care of it (Tim McCaffery
and Kris Taylor), and
they’ve done great things!
Thanks to a new sponsor,
we will now be having an
“individual finals” event to
the competition following
the four team rounds.
The AGHS officers took
pity on those individuals
who worked hard and
played every round, but
would always lose matches
since one or two of their
team members would
forfeit. Well, this is your
time to shine!
At the conclusion of the
four team rounds, we will
go over all results in a
meeting with the team cap-
tains and advisors to dou-
ble-check all results and to
verify the list of partici-
will have more details about this next project com-ing soon.

The American Go Honor Society would like your input. The AGHS is putting together a Legislative Council unit that will help us shape the future of go into the United States! Any sec-ondary or university school club who wishes to affiliate
with the AGHS program will receive one vote. Addi-tional votes are given based on number of mem-bers, active participation, national officers, and out-standing performance to the go community and the community-at-large. We

chase each other into the path for the perfect game. Hikaru no Go won the pres-tigious Shogakukan Manga Award in 2000 and the Te-zuka Osamu Cultural Prive in 2003, only four other series have ever accomplished this feat.
Christopher Vu is the senior editor for the Rising Star. He also provided the Corgi picture on page 1. Go Corgis!
In 1998, a new manga hit the scenes that revolutionized the go world. Go’s popular-ity had previously been in decline. However, Shonen Jump’s release of Hikaru no Go by Yumi Hotta, illustrated by Takeshi Obata, reached critical acclaim. The plot follows a boy named Hikaru, who stumbles upon a go board haunted by the spirit of Sai, a fictional go player
from the Heian era. Sai’s only desire is to play go again and uses Hikaru’s mind to try to find the “Hand of God” a game of peerless moves without equal. The first person Hikaru plays is Akira Toya, a boy his age with the potential to become the next world champion. Following their first meeting, a strong rivalry develop between the two as they
over-extending, but this year’s program has the potential to travel far and, perhaps, make a future President of the United States, an individual who is a go enthusiast.
Everyone, don’t forget to watch the conclusion of the 3rd round this week!
This speech, like so many presidential speeches, was ghost-written by mem-bers of the Publicity Department.
You owe us dinner, Matt!
Ladies and gentlemen, it is coming to the end of my second year as president of the American Go Honor Society. As much hard work and fun that it has been, there’s a lot to be said about the people who work with this organization. The AGHS and its programs would not be able to stand without the support of our hard-working volunteers and staff who tirelessly work to make sure our events run smoothly and effectively, often times they go without any thanks at all.
But this is what it means to be a servant leader. Through their example, they can touch the lives of many more to dedicate their lives to giving back to the community and working hard to ensure that the future generations will have something to come.
Chris Vu is leading initiatives to find the next group of leaders to take care of AGHS and learn various aspects simultaneously, such as languages or history. It may be a bit optimistic and

have more than one page of your activities and acco-lades. Unfortunately, it’s not impressive to start a local club unless you can show benefits. For example, if your club raised $100,000 for charity. Limit the number of your activities that show off a well-versed part of you, but only those that show results. Like captain of wres-tling team (all-state), aca-demic all-American, honor society member, et cetera. An example of a resume is listed on page five of this newsletter for you to see.

One of the most important things that colleges are look-ing for is your curriculum vitae or your resume. This week’s topic takes a look at how to appeal your resume to colleges, programs, and career opportunities. First things first, you need to make it business appealing without going overboard. Online searches can help you find numerous templates that you can use. However, do not follow these templates to the T as you need to custom-ize it for your own benefit.
Next is knowing what sort of subjects you should put on your resume. Contact infor-mation should go at the top so that the admission officers
know where to reach you. Also make it professional—don’t use an email like “[email protected]”, make a new account that is more formal, such as “[email protected]” and so forth.
Next, list your school infor-mation, such as your GPA, location of school, degree of graduation, and any honors earned.
The last aspect we will talk about is the filler. It’s true that an individual should be well-rounded. However, you should not turn in a four-page letter of your life story. Short and sweet is where it is at. You should not

that you can use to show how the game promotes patience and cognitive abilities. Cou-ple this together to make a successful club!
Kris Taylor is the junior editor for the Rising Star. He runs the Jasper HS Go Club (TX) and is a candidate for the AGHS Future Leaders Immersion Program.
Many young go enthusiasts start their club, print out posters, and make final touches only to realize that they have no advisor. While choosing to hold a club off of school eliminates this process, the same principles can be used when asking a proposed location for use during meetings.
To a go player, a “club advisor” is someone at a school or venue that will be present during meetings so that the meeting can be held. The club sponsor is usually required by the school so that they can provide a room for the meetings, storage space for equipment, and access to administrative
powers, such as school announcements. First, pick out a teacher that you are on good terms and willing to give his or her free time to help your new club flourish. Second, make sure to be cordial. Offending a sponsor not only would make you lose the club, but the poten-tial for any of your members to gain recommendations or respect in the school setting. Be sure to give them the re-spect that they deserve and listen to their advice care-fully. After you have a pro-spective sponsor, offer them ways that they can contrib-ute to the club. They will en-joy go club much more if they have an active role. There are numerous curricula

This past week, the top two undefeated teams squared off in a system that will most likely determine the overall National Champions. 2007 champion Stuyvesant HS knocked off their state rival and dark horse candidate New York Go Center in the second round. Similarly, Orange County GC avenged their 2008 finals loss with a 2-1 decision over Mission San Jose, dash-ing their hopes of back-to-back wins.

Sample Resume - This is How It’s Done
Did you know that…
Michael Redmond is the
only Western go player to
reach 9-dan?
He turned professional in 1981 (aged
18) and reached 9-dan in 2000.
So you have broken the beginner barrier and are now treading on the lengthy road to “dan”.
During this time, you are undoubtedly hungry for any Go related theory that can improve your
game. However, there is no easy way out—rather, it’s all about your perception of the game.
“I already know what the game is about…” is what you may think. There is a strong reason as
to why we should change and keep changing our outlook of the game. Research has been
done with memory experiments to see exactly why stronger players are, well.. stronger. The
tests revealed that the stronger players have stronger imagination for their playing style and
package their thought proceses more efficiently. Think about it.
Anonymous is an AGHS national officer whose name starts with “K” and rhymes with “Bevin”.

Mission Statement
A prediction once stated that it would take the Western nations one century to
catch up to the strength of Asian countries. The American Go Honor Society was
established to break this prediction and help the go players of the world rival the
players from the Orient.
Brief History
In 2000, a manga scanlation team brought Hikaru no Go into the English-
speaking world for the first time. It became such a hit, that the team created an
online go club to play with each other. But in 2002, when the manga had been
completed, the members dwindled. Three high school students from different
parts of North America decided to create the Sea Otters Go club in order to
promote go among youth. Their programs became so popular and the now-known
American Go Honor Society was founded to help develop leardership abilities in
the American youth to become the next leaders in go and the community.
