SDPHS MEMBERSHIP REPORT ... Carol Gladys, National Secretary

As of 12/31/2014

Our National Convention in Charleston, SC was a huge success with attendance better than expected. The Pearl Harbor Survivors in attendance participated in all of the activities during the convention. All of our members and guests were honored to

be in the company of these great heroes. We enjoyed a dinner cruise Thursday evening and bustour of Charleston on Friday. Saturday’s luncheon speaker was Jim Morgan, child survivor, whoexplained how he experienced the horror of the attack. Jim also spoke of his father who wasaboard the USS Ward, the ship that fired the opening shots of WWII, sinking a Japanese midget

submarine four hours before the air attack. Saturday evening concluded with the general membership business meeting. Results of the membership voting ballots were announced and all of the resolutions were passed. Sunday morningdawned a cold and blustery day in Charleston. It was December 7 and all PHS & SDPHS were invited to attend thePearl Harbor memorial ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown . Special thanks to Eleanor Meunier ofVFW Post 10624, Mt. Pleasant, SC for inviting SDPHS to participate with the VFW in the ceremony. Speakersincluded Major General James E. Livingston, Medal of Honor recipient, Commanders of the VFW, and the SDPHSNational President, Louella Large. Lou's speech kept the attentive crowd in awe as she spoke of the tragedy ofDecember 7, 1941. As TV cameras rolled and newspaper and media reporters watched Lou stated “We need to cometogether as a nation again. The only colors we should be concerned about are right there, red, white and blue” as sheturned and pointed to the giant American flag on the wall of the hangar deck. She received a standing ovation. Theceremony on the USS Yorktown continued with each PHS in attendance taking the microphone and giving his personalaccount of the attack. Watching and listening to these proud and great men was a never to be forgotten experience foreveryone. The ceremony concluded with Memorial Wreaths presented over the side of the USS Yorktown to honor ourveterans who gave their lives. National President Louella Large and I presented a wreath on behalf of SDPHS inmemory of our military lost that day at Pearl Harbor as well as our Pearl Harbor Survivors who have passed. It was avery solomn moment. The convention concluded with the banquet featuring our keynote speaker, Thomas Kimmel, grandson of Admiral Husband Kimmel, Commander-in-Chief of the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, HI, at the time ofthe attack. He presented a powerful presentation exonerating his grandfather from blame. PHS and SDPHS memberswere very thankful for his informative and educational presentation. Our final speaker, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Myr on“Jay” Carraway told “the tale of an old sailor” aboard the USS Hulbert that fateful morning. Jay started his speech withhumor that kept the crowd laughing. He continued with his story about manning the aft gun on the USS Hulbert, believedto be the first ship to open fire on the Japanese air attack. Jay received a standing ovation as a very proud son looked on.The dinner concluded with the swearing in of our new officers hosted by Gordon and Carolyn Sparks from SC. OurNational Secretary, Carol Gladys, designed a beautiful pin for the convention that is available from SDPHS small stores. The SDPHS Executive Board members, Convention Planners and SDPHS members made Charleston a success. Spacedoes not permit mentioning everyone by name but you know who you are and so do I. Special thanks to my wife, Teresa, and my daughter, Samantha. I could not have succeeded without you both. My lifelong friends, Perry & Tina Koustenisdid a fantastic job assisting Teresa and I with photography and they gave a generous donation to the organization.

27 January 2015To: Sons and Daughters of the Pearl Harbor Survivors and Survivors,Re: USS JOHN FINN DDG 113 - Christening Ceremony

To whom it may concern,I write today to introduce myself as the representative of the Nieces and Nephews of LT. John W. Finn and to let you and the Survivors

know the most recent information about the christening of the USS JOHN FINN DDG 113.I know that Uncle John would want his fellow Survivors to know about the christening of his ship that so many of them have spent years

lobbying the Navy for a ship to be named in his honor. I have attend several of the San Diego Survivors gatherings with Uncle John over theyears and he always considered the Survivors as his contemporaries and his closest 'Band of Brothers'.

The progress of the ships construction is actually ahead of schedule and the firm tentative christening date is scheduled for 2 May 2015,barring any unforeseen delays. The ship is under construction in the Huntington - Ingalls Shipyard at Pascagoula, Mississippi.

The ships first Captain has been selected and he is currently recruiting the first crew and making arrangements for the ships outfitting withits military equipment. His name is Commander Michael Wagner, USN. (See the copy of the USS JOHN FINN Newsletter with CMDRWagners bio.)

I would like to ask you if you would let the Survivors and their families know of the christening. Uncle John would have been honoredto have any of them there. I would ask that someone in your organization take the lead and be the single point of contact and send the Navythe Survivors names and address' that are going to attend. The Navy will send each attending Survivor an invitation to the christening.

Please contact, Alicia L. Aadnesen, CIV NAVSEA TEAM SHIPS <[email protected]> with your Survivors names. She is inthe office of CAPT Mark Vandroff, NAVSEA PEO SHIP, PMS400D the DDG Shipbuilding administrator.

Looking forward to seeing Survivors at the Christening. If I can answer any questions for you please contact me.Slàinte,Dennis I. McAllister (For the Nieces and Nephews of LT John W. Finn, USN)

* DON’T TOUCH SALAD*Eileen (Leenie) Farley

Daughter of John J. Farley, U.S.S. California

1 (8 oz.) container of Cool Whip1 or 2 small boxes of Jello, strawberry, orange or lime

are thebest!1 can (15 oz.) fruit cocktail, well drained. Take out cherries

Dump Cool Whip and Dry jello in a medium size serving bowl. Do NOTadd water. Plop in fruit cocktail. Drink the juice! Blend well using a spatula.Decorate the top with cherries. Pineapple chunks or bits can be added also.Chill. If you sample it too much, just run spatula around the edges, thatsmooths it out. Enjoy! Serves 1 Dad or 5 others.

JOHN J. FARLEY John J. Farley Jr. was born in San Francisco. In 1921. His father was a 30year career army Officer. The Farley clan lived in San Francisco, Honolulu,HI, Georgia, Fisher’s Island NY, Panama Canal Zone, San Antonio, TX,and Missoula, MT. Dad’s father was assigned to the Quartermaster corps asa trouble-shooter. Each time he successfully uncovered trouble, the Armyquickly transferred him to a different post. John Sr. was sent to the Philippines in mid-1939. Two months later thefamily, Mom, John & 2 sisters were scheduled to leave Montana for Manila.War conditions cancelled all family transfers. John Sr. was a Prisoner ofWar and died in the Bataan Death March. He is buried in Arlington NationalCemetery. In 1939 after high school graduation, John Jr. decided to join the navy.He had experienced 18 years of Army brat life and wanted to choose adifferent path. He chose the military over attending college. Navy life saw Dad living in San Diego. He was assigned to the USS

California as a Machinist Mate. Dad knew very little about machines. HeLearned! Dad recalled “Duty was great and life aboard the ship waswonderful until that fateful day in December, 1941.” Dad’s duty stationwas #4 fire room. His GQ station was in the emergency boiler control room. On December 7th Dad was below deck. He felt the bombs and torpedoesas the Japanese bombarded the ship. The California was on fire and sinking.Dad helped remove ammo from the ship. It was pitch black below deck.Abandon Ship! Dad wound up in the greasy water. Before he could reachthe Muster Station, he was selected for water duty and later boat duty. Hefished around in the murky water looking for bodies. It was several daysbefore Dad finally checked in at a Muster Station. No one had missed himbecause they all thought Dad had been killed. Dad transferred off the California and was assigned to the USS Chicago. He saw action in Guadalcanal. After the Chicago sank, Dad transferred tothe USS Heermann. He was in the Pacific area, Taffy 3 and Leyte Gulf. When the war ended, Dad was discharged and returned to San Francisco. He married Clare O’Connell, graduated from University of San Francisco, and raised 6 children. In 1991 Dad retired from the Contra Costa County Assessor’s Officeand joined the local Pearl Harbor Survivors chapter. He was Editor, Treasurer, and Chaplain for many years. Sadly, Mom died suddenly in 2001. Dadencouraged daughters Kathleen & Eileen to join Sons & Daughters of PearlHarbor Survivors. They all attended many state and national conventions. Two sons, Gerald & Paul, also joined SDPHS. Dad passed away in 2007.He was buried in his Pearl Harbor Survivor uniform.
