The California Climate & Agriculture Network (CalCAN) is a statewide coalition thatadvances state and federal policy to realize the powerful climate solutions offered by

sustainable and organic agriculture.

State Water Efficiency & Enhancement  Program Participants

BOLTHOUSE FARMS Bolthouse Farms, headquartered in

Bakersfield, is one of the largest

producers of carrots in the U.S., growing

both conventional and organic crops.

They received two SWEEP grants during

the first years of the program’s launch in

2014 and 2015.

The first project involved the conversion

of the pump on an irrigation well from a

diesel motor to cleaner electric motor

that cuts carbon dioxide emissions, and

installation of a variable frequency drive

to improve pump efficiency and save

energy.

The second grant funded the replacement

of more than six miles of aluminum pipe

with state-of-the-art PVC pipe. The pipe

upgrade reduces leaks and saves time

spent manually opening valves and

recharging the irrigation system. It also

cuts down on runoff thereby improving

water quality and maintains more

uniform irrigation for better crop

performance.
