January has come and gone, students are back to school and 2018 is well

underway. The earthworks are also well underway for our Stage 4, 50 bed

building which will be known as “Jacaranda”.

Last week, we hosted some high-profile dignitaries who planted a

jacaranda tree to signify the beginning of this project. The Hon Ken Wyatt

AM, MP, Minister for Indigenous Health and the Minister for Aged Care

along with Mr Llew O’Brien, MP, Member for Wide Bay did the honours.

Following the planting, Minister Wyatt announced the approval of a $5M

capital grant towards the cost of construction of Jacaranda.

Minister Wyatt and Mr O’Brien then hosted a round table meeting of

around twenty representatives of aged care facilities located in the Wide

Bay electorate. Mr Wyatt encouraged questions from those in attendance

and matters discussed included the underestimation of numbers of

dementia sufferers in our communities; the lack of availability of respite

beds and the effect that has on carers; the difficulty of navigating the My

Aged Care website, and the considerable size of the aged care workforce

and its contribution to local businesses.

Mr O’Brien also acknowledged and praised the quality of care provided by

aged care workers in his electorate, and the positive effect it has on the

lives of our elderly. He stated that he would like to see more public

recognition of the good work being done. Mr Wyatt concurred, asking

that those in attendance pass on the department’s appreciation to all those

in governance and those on the front line within their organisations.

FEBRUARY 2018 CHRONICLE

Minister Ken Wyatt, Llew O’Brien and Paul Medway planting the jacaranda tree.

Please bear with us……………….. Many of you will have experienced issues when trying to call Cooinda over past months. We, too, are extremely frustrated as not only are there problems with incoming calls, but also with outgoing calls.

We have replaced our modem and had many visits from Telstra technicians, with some improvement, however, we are still experiencing many issues. We also have the Ombudsman’s office and Llew O’Brien’s office working with us to resolve the problem.

Our email now seems to be working well, so if you are experiencing any issues with calling us, please drop an email to Renae ([email protected]) advising the time, date, and type of problem so that we can add this to our log.

We appreciate your patience as we work towards a solution.

Llew O’Brien congratulates Cooinda Management Committee chairman Paul Medway upon the approval of a $5M Capital

Grant to assist with the construction of the Stage 4, 50 bed building which will be known

as Jacaranda. Earthworks have begun as seen in the background.

Around 90 residents and staff enjoyed a beaut Aussie lunch and the Cooee Games to celebrate Australia Day at Cooinda. The beautifully decorated Linga Longa lounge, (complete with gum leaves, LOTS of Aussie flags, banners and stuffed toys) was the venue for this true-blue occasion.

Thong throwing (won by Ken), dummy spitting (won by staff member Klaus) and Brad's sing-a-long were all features of the day. Well done to everyone involved!
