HAPNOT's annual Co - Ed Dance was held on Frida7,Feb-ruary 11 in the Jubilee h a l l . Music was provided by Out of the Blue,

The h a i l was decorated i n an array of red and white co-lours, the usual Valentine theme. Hearts and cupids ad-orned the walls, A lar g e , g l i -ttering heart was hung behind the band. The tables had s i l -ver centrepieces. Dishes con-taining nuts and bolts and chips were placed on the tables along with dishes of red and white j e l l y beans and red cinnamon hearts. Punch was served.

The nuclear age of auto-mation and progress i s upon us, but there are s t i l l t h -ousands of people, manely adults, with very unprogres-sive views concerning, nat-u r a l l y , the teenage genera-t i o n s . Some reasons f o r t h -ese unfavorable opinions are attributed to dress, h a i r -s t y l e s , a t t i t u d e s , and ideas that d i f f e r , sometimes grea-t l y , from the parents' v i e -ws.

F i r s t l y , i t i s common kn-owledge that any teenager worth his s a l t must rebel under parental supervision, i f only by the s l i g h t e s t , f r a c t i o n . This r e b e l l i o n us-u a l l y takes place i n the form of grotesque a t t i r e , h a i r s t y l e s , and modes of t r -ansportatior. Bell-bottomed pants, l i t t l e heels. Empire-l i n e dresses, granny gowns, ti g h t pants, and long s t r a i -ght h a i r , plus bangs ( for boys and g i r l s a l i k e ) are the rage now. Of course. Ad-u l t s regard t h i s apparel as disgusting and immoral, but i f they stopped and mulled over the weird fads they divulged i n i n t h e i r youth, they might not voice t h e i r l o r d l y opinions so bo i s t e r -ously.

Secondly, the second gen-eration does not recognize or appreciate oxir love f o r modern music. I t i s w e l l kn-own that there i s an extrem-e l y widespread admiration among the younger set f o r such musicians as the Be a t l -es, the R o l l i n g Stones, The Dave Clark Fiv e , and other bands. This brand of music does not appeal to the adult mind, although there i s a slljght minority which w i l l recognize a few of the numer-ous folk-singing groups as having a tinge of t a l e n t . Also, the l a t e s t beats and rhythms of dance are extrem-el y d i s t a s t e f u l to the adul-ts of today.

Thirdly, the new ideas proposed by the adolescents of t h i s era c o n f l i c t repeat-edly with those of the par-ents. I t i s true that there are ntimerous teenagers who take t h e i r parents for gra-nted and who quickly lose t h e i r parents' respect by t h e i r actions, but we must remember that not a l l teen-agers are made t h i s way. Drinking, smoking, and other vices are used very unwisely by a great proportion of the modern youth, and to t h e i r disadvantage. Many forms of i l l n e s s or sorrow can be avoided a f t e r the fun i s over by using good- common sense before the fun begins. However, many teenagers r u i n t h e i r l i v e s and t h e i r par-er.ts' l i v e s by oeglectixig to take t h i s precaution,and for t h i s reason, a great majority of parents regard a l l teenagers as being i g -norant, destructive, and e n t i r e l y useless i n a comm-i n i t y . Therefore, a f t e r r e a l i z i n g

that teenagers can be useful members of society and t r y -ing to cope with t h i s v i t a l , and sometimes very t r y i n g , phase of l i f e , adults may learn to l i v e peacefully and contentedly with t h i s explo-sive generation.However,the teenagers themselves must also lend a hand i n forming t i s mutual understanding and t r u s t .Fun i s f\m,but i t can only be tolerated to a certain degree,and r e s t r a i n t i s necessary to maintain the bond between parents and t h e i r children,If t h i s bond i s kept strong by the co-oper ation of both parties invovl-edjthe cold war between par-ents and teenagers w i l l evap-orate into a peaceful co-ex-istence f o r a l l . , HARBOP AT LASTl Cruising around i n ny yacht,

not Collegiate again played host to the University Semin-ar which serves a l l our surr-ounding d i s t r i c t s .

Students from S i r Maurice Roche, Thompson, The Pas, Snow Lake and Cranberry j o i n -ed Grade 12 Hannot students i n w r i t i n g tests and i n t e r -viewing professors from Man-itoba and Brandon University,

On Friday morning, Hapnot and S i r Maurice Roche students wrote aptitude and personal-i t y t e s t s . These were graded by teachers and professors, and then interpreted to stud-ents i n d i v i d u a l l y . Following t h i s , students could i n t e r -view any of a number of Univ-e r s i t y professors who were present and Question them about courses possible i n t h -e i r u n i v e r s i t i e s , or any d i f f -i c u l t i e s that they were en-countering.

The out of town students wrote the tests i n the a f t e r -noon and were interviewed on Saturday,

Throughout both days, tests were interrupted by breaks, and coffee and doughnuts were made available to both stud-ents and professors. Friday evening a banquet was attend-ed by the students. The even-ing included the annual Co-ed Dance. Free t i c k e t s were made to the v i s i t i n g students.

This Seminar has been an annual event for a number of years and i s sincerely appre-ciated by the students. The information has proven i n v a l -uable.

ThE GRAPEVINE Weill exams are over

again and I'm sure everyone i s breathing a huge sigh of r e l i e f . The fateful date, March 21st. was the day on which most of the results were given out. Congratul-ations to those who did well in their exams, and we hope those who didn't do so well w i l l do better i n June.

The Kopper Kings made a t r i p to Brandon to compete in a basketball tournament being held there recently. Unfortunately, the Kings lost out i n the f i n a l game of the Consolation Event.

The Kopper Kweens atten-ded a basketball tournament held i n Brandon the follow-ing weekend. Although they too, f ailed to bring honors back home, both the Kings and Kweens must be commended for their efforts and their good sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Chris Robertson who von the Prov-i n c i a l T i t l e at the skiing championships held i n Mc-Creaiy recently, A nuniber of other students from Hapnot also attended this skiing meet, and represent-ed their town competently.

Congratulations also to Fred Lavitt who placed f i r s t i n the Broad-jump event at the Red River Relay. Dave Wilson, Larke Stadrgrk, and Beverly Kenke must also be commended for their fine efforts i n this relay.

A committee has been formed for the reorganiza-tion of the Student Council This committee w i l l discuss the changes that w i l l be made when we enter the new school next year.

A school dance was held On Wednesday, March 23, in the R.H. Charming Auditorium Music was provided by "Out of the Blue" and lunch was taken care of by members of the Pep Club. Although the crowd was not as large as I t usually i s , those who attended enjoyed themselves

The tea was held i n St. Anne's Hall on February 26. The Kings and Kweens (with assistance from their moth-ers and coaches) operated the entire show on their own. Although i t looked a bit odd to see Eric McCormick handle a l i t t l e wee tea cup, the tea was very adeptly served. Judging from the number of

people there, more people saw the Kings and Kweens serving tea than have ever seen them play basketball.

The tea was an overwhelm-ing success. Having made nearly $liiO profit we can expect to see both teams i n new uniforms right away.

In their f i r s t game the Kings lost a heart-breaker to Morden 37-31: • Mordenjon their half* went on to the finals to lose to Vincent Massey by one point, Ralph Brown,one of the King's top players, was fouled out in the f i r s t quart-er and this was probably the deciding factor as Ralph scored 27andl7 points i n his next two games,while he did not score any i n the f i r s t game. However, the blame can-not be placed on him for the los s , i t i s just unfortunate that this happened.
