vided. All women of the

church are invited to join us

February 2020

We now have 2 new ways to

give to our church. A mo-

bile app along with a giving

page on our website

(www.fmuthumc.org) is

available for us to make

donations to our church. If

you want to check out the

app, it can be downloaded

on your phone, just look for

the GivePlus app. If you

have any questions, you can

call Bill Coulter, Financial

Secretary, at 989-652-2952.

2020 has been a fantastic

year so far. Our high school

students finished their fi-

nals and passed. The cur-

rent number of kids attend-

ing range between 6 and 15.

Some days it’s very crazy in

the room, but we all love it.

One of my goals for 2020 is

to work more hands-on

with the schools and find

out their needs. I will be

having one-on-one meetings

with all the principals to

discuss this matter. Please

keep me and the principals

in your prayers that they are

open for the help.

Finance Report 2019 & 2020 Budget

Sunday, January 12 was a

snowy, wintery day when I

gave a financial update on

how we finished 2019 and

our budget needs for 2020.

In case you missed it, here

is a summary.

General Fund Contribu-

tions: $366,108

Expenditures: $319,894

Amount added for minis-

tries: $46,213

Our donations to the gen-

eral fund came in $46,213

more than our expenses.

This is very good news.

Many committees were at

budget or much less, includ-

ing some salaries for youth

programs. And our health

care savings was down as

our two Michigan confer-

ences became one. Thank

you, to all our committees,

for being good stewards of

our money in 2019.

Building and Maintenance

$44,174

Missions and Ministries

$34,461

The building maintenance

fund is important as this

goes towards future major

building expenses, such as

the parking lot, LED Re-

placements, outside paint-

ing, heating and air condi-

tioning, and to remodel the

rest rooms near the gather-

ing space. We brought in

$44,174 in 2019.

Other church ministries,

collectively such as the me-

morial fund, women’s mis-

sions, kitchen ministries, to

name a few, brought in

$34,461.

2019 General Fund Contri-

butions $366,108

2020 General Fund Budget

$399,447

Our 2020 budget has in-

creased by $33,339 over

what we gave in 2019. An-

other way of looking at this

is it is just over $2,700 a

month more than our 2019

average giving.

The majority of this in-

crease is money for a Pastor

of Discipleship that Staff-

Pastor Parish Committee is

considering. Church growth

and Pastor’s Discretionary

Fund have also increased.

There are some more main-

tenance and insurance costs

under the trustee budget so

we can keep our building

and facilities in good shape

and insured.

How many of you have

smartphones? If you would

like “to give” with your

smart phone, Give + is an

app that Bill Coulter, finan-

cial secretary, has set up so

your amount goes straight

to us. Search for Give +, set

up your account and when

you enter your location, you

will find our church and go

from there. We currently

have the general fund,

building fund and missions

as accounts to give. Giving

to Missions on Bread Pan

Sunday will go towards

Bread Pan. All other times

it will go towards Missions.

Look for more information

in the near future.

If you want a breakdown of

our budget or any of our

reports, please ask. We want

to be as transparent as possi-

ble.

In summary, our financial

position is good. All church

committees are showing

good fiscal responsibility,

and we are growing our

ministry.

Thank you for a job well

done.

There’s still time...Whether

you’ve already made a New

Year’s resolution or are still

thinking about how to

make this year a little better

than the last, here’s one

resolution you might in-

clude on your list:

Embrace opportunities to

care for people who are

hurting.

We probably all know

someone who is facing chal-

lenging times—illness, grief,

job loss, or some other life

difficulty. By reaching out

and being a caring presence,

we can make a big differ-

ence in the lives of those

who are hurting. Of course,

sticking to a New Year’s

resolution can sometimes

be difficult. To help with

this one, here are two ways

to enhance your caring for

others:

Think Stephen

When someone is facing

challenging times it is usu-

ally helpful to not face

them alone. For that rea-

son FUMC has Stephen

Ministry. You can show

you care by telling others

about how a Stephen Min-

ister may be able to be

there for them. Next, sug-

gest they contact Linda

Mawer at 989-780-2115 for

more information. While

“Thinking Stephen” con-

sider becoming a Stephen

Minister next time training

is offered.

Cancer-Now What?

All too often we hear that

someone is facing cancer

and we want to reach out

with support and care,

but we aren’t sure how.

One way to do so is to

give a copy of Cancer-Now

What?, a comprehensive

how-to guide that helps

those with cancer and

their loved ones navigate

the medical, emotional,

relational, and spiritual

challenges ahead. Compli-

mentary copies are avail-

able in our gathering

space.

Whatever your resolu-

tions may be for the year

ahead, may God bless

you, those who are suffer-

ing, and the care you pro-

vide.

Here is what one care receiver thought:

“Without a doubt, my decision to receive help through the Stephen Ministry from our church,

has been the best decision of my life. I thank God every day. Having a Stephen Minister has

completely changed the trajectory of my life. Stephen Ministry is such a good model for how

the body of Christ should work. Thank you for the work you are doing; God is truly being glori-

fied in the service of Stephen Ministers everywhere!”

Sprouts Update

Page 7

February 2020

Do you have the gift of faith, healing, or miracles? Do you love to pray or do you strug-gle to pray? Would you be willing to pray for others?

The Sprouts are enjoying our time together each Sun-day! The older kids (3rd, 4th, 5th grades) have been learning about relying on God and how God is in con-trol. The picture of the group shows a maze they created in which they were trying to control a ping pong ball, and learning how hard

it is to control things. They also have been looking up scripture and reading aloud to the group. The younger kids (Pre-K, K, 1st, 2nd grades) have been learning a lot about Moses, and during our breakout sessions, we use blocks, color and do projects. Here you can see Adam and Calvin building

towers as they were “slaves” in Egypt building for Phar-aoh, and in the other picture you can see Lillith who is showing the baskets the kids created to float Moses down the river in the tall reeds. We have a great time each Sun-day, and if you’d like to vol-unteer with us, please contact Lisa at 517.648.9166.

Someday? This study in prayer will be a catalyst for us as we grow a prayer ministry. The group will meet Sundays after church

at 10:45 in the Emmaus Room. All are welcome. Facilitator: Ken Worley

Starting March 1st

Page 8

Mission Bell

The mission of our church

is Make Disciples for the

Transformation of the World.

There was some discussion

about what a disciple is.

Pastor discussed some

Council expectations. This

is going to be a year of tran-

sition, transitioning into a

Single Board of Governance

format. The new Council

will be made up of about

twelve leaders from our

church: three from finance,

three from trustees, three

from SPRC the pastor, the

lay leader, and the lay mem-

ber to Annual Conference.

This group will review the

pastor, review the pastor’s

salary, discuss other staffing,

etc., information that may

need to be kept confidential

under SPRC guidelines.

This group will also review

financial information; this

information needs to be

transparent. Communica-

tion is going to be very im-

portant; how do we connect

the entire church family.

There was some discussion

regarding members not be-

ing involved. Will people

feel left out and feel that a

select few members are mak-

ing all the decisions. Pastor

Ryan shared that it is about

hands on ministry versus

attending committee meet-

ings. Pray for the transition

to this new model.

Pastor Ryan shared some

goals he has for the future:

resurrect some of the mis-

sion opportunities our

church did in the past,

small groups, add a new

service, and develop a

strong children’s ministry.

Pastor Ryan shared that

Kathy Townley has been

assessing our worship ser-

vices. She feels it would be

beneficial for our church to

upgrade some of our cur-

rent technology, such as the

screen in the front of the

sanctuary. The worship

committee is requesting

$35,000 to replace the

screen with two 98 inch

screens that would be

placed up front on each

side. She feels our technol-

ogy is behind other area

churches. Roger Yerion

moved to approve $35,000

for new screens and other

technology improvements.

Art Loeffler seconded the

motion. All in favor, none

opposed, motion passed.

Pastor Ryan shared that

during Lent there will a

7PM Ash Wednesday ser-

vice, a potluck and com-

munion on Maundy Thurs-

day, a 7PM Good Friday

service, and one service at

9:30AM on Easter Sunday.

There will be two shared

Lenten services with Blessed

Trinity Catholic Church;

March 11, 7PM at our

church and March 25, 7PM

will be at Blessed Trinity.

Long-sleeve T-shirts are also

available for $25. Proceeds

from the sale of the shirts
