KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Rhonda Hunter is Senior Vice President for Timberlands with Weyerhaeuser. She’d been vice president of Weyerhaeuser’s Southern Timberlands operations since 2010. Prior to that role, she held leadership roles in a variety of disci-plines for the Southern Timberlands operations, including plan-ning and inventory, regional timberlands management, environ-mental and work systems, fi nance, and land acquisition.

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS: Peter C. Wijnbergen was appointed President and Chief Ex-ecutive Offi cer of Norbord in early 2014. He served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Offi cer from September 2010 through December 2013 and prior thereto held senior leadership positions in operations, strategic planning and sales, marketing and logistics. His areas of expertise are sales, marketing, opera-tions management and strategic planning. Wijnbergen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from University of Toronto.

Michael D. Garcia has been President of Domtar’s Pulp and Paper division since May 2014. He has over 20 years of inter-national management experience in paper, steel, and aluminum

LUNCHEON SPEAKER: Dr. Robert H. “Bob” Jones, Jr., Clem-son’s Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Pro-vost, and Professor of Forestry and Environmental Conserva-tion, will be the Nov. 2 Luncheon Speaker. Dr. Jones earned his bachelor’s degree in forest management and master’s in forestry from Clemson and his doctorate in forest ecology from the State University of New York College of Environmen-tal Science and Forestry, Syracuse University. He previously served as a department head and professor at Virginia Tech and a faculty member at Auburn University.

SESSION SPEAKER: Chris Vaughn is Managing Director - Phi-lanthropy & Landowner Engagement with Lowcountry Land Trust, Charleston, SC. After earning an MS in Forestry from Clemson University in 1996, he joined Westvaco as a Field Forester and then District Forester. In 2004, he began a position with The Na-ture Conservancy in Charlottesville, VA as Land Protection Spe-cialist. In 2008, he returned to the Lowcountry to manage Ducks Unlimited’s Lowcountry Program.

The Tree Farm Forest Owners Program will be held Nov. 1, 2017 for a tour of Walt McPhail’s Belton, SC property. McPhail will discuss his management practices including: thinning, burning, fertilization, hardwood and vegetative control affecting growth and yields on loblolly stands of 1, 3, 18, 28, and 32 years old. Examples of state and federal cost-share programs will be highlighted as well as wildlife plantings, food plots, fruit orchard, and oak tree plant-ings. Will include discussion on a Wetlands Restoration Program project consisting of four ponds with 20 acres of water. Hunt club and hunting leases will also be a topic for discussion.

Participants will board vans at the bottom fl oor/valet parking circle of the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 7:45 a.m. on November 1.

Participants for our Nov. 2 Spouse pro-gram option will gather in the Hyatt Re-gency lobby at 11:00 a.m. John Nolan with Greenville History Tours will lead an eight-block historical walking tour com-mencing at 11:15 a.m. The Tour, which will last an hour-and-a-half, will focus on history of Greenville’s West End from the hotel to Falls Park. Lunch will be Dutch treat at Mary’s Restaurant at Falls Cottage. Weather permitting, the group will eat out-side in the cottage garden overlooking the falls. After lunch, spouses can enjoy a leisurely walk back to the hotel and enjoy shopping along Main Street. Transportation back to the hotel will also be available. Anyone planning to participate in the Walking Tour and lunch, should sign up on the Association’s Convention Regis-tration Form. A head count is needed for the tour AND lunch at least one week prior. Also On The AgendaAwards: During the Forestry Association’s Awards and Rec-ognition Breakfast, there will be presentations for: Jerry L. Shrum Outstanding Educator of the Year SC Tree Farmer of the Year Outstanding Logger of the Year Charles H. Flory Distinguished Service Award Installation Ceremony: Newly elected offi cers and directors will be announced and installed.

Awards Breakfast. The Nov. 3 Awards and Recognition Breakfast will include a progress re-port on the search/selection process for South Carolina’s new State Forester. Walt A. McPhail, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the SC Forestry Commission, will discuss current status on the search to fi nd a successor for Gene Kodama who announced his retirement plans in late June.

Forestry Association members requested more networking op-portunities so we’ve added two more events. Sunrise Service. Our speaker for the Nov. 3 Sunrise Service is Dennis L. Bauknight, Easley, SC. He is a former Forestry Asso-ciation Board member and 2010 South Carolina Tree Farmer of the Year. He received the 1998 Forest Conservation Award from the SC Wildlife Federation and was named 2006 USDA-NRCS Employee of the Year. Dennis and his wife Amanda will also lead some inspi-rational selections during the pro-gram -- with attendee participation.

Credit: Convention attendees will earn 6 Category 1 hours of Continuing Forestry Education. The Nov. 1 Tree Farm For-est Owners Program attendees will earn 2 Category 1 hours and 1 Category 2 hours of Continuing Forestry Education.

RecreationGOLF: The Forestry Association’s Nov. 1 Golf Tournament will be held at the Preserve at Verdae Golf Club -- 7 miles from the Hyatt. This 18 hole, par 72 championship golf course, de-signed by Willard Byrd, was carved into a lush Carolina forest with hills and mountain-like brooks, making it both scenic and challenging to play. Foursome assignments will be sent to registered golfers. Prizes awarded to winners.
