In the nine month ine it releae, though, both the eonomi

Whether you ip burgers or swap derivatives, losing a job just plain sucks. Im not here to tell youotherwise. Especially, when you were ollowing the rules, did everything right, worked your ass

o, sacrifced what you really wanted to do or years or decades on the promise o a better lie

and still got sacked, or worse, watched your entire company go down in ames.

Whats going on in the world and the economy right now is rightening. Nobody knows when the

other shoe will drop, what it will look and eel like when it does, or i another shoe even exists.

And, or many o the millions whove lost their jobs this year, the position youve lost simply doesnt

exist anymore in any company. So, going back or making a lateral move isnt an option.

But, Ive got news or you. What eels like the end o the world to you now may, in act, be the

window youve dreamed o or decades.

How many o you have spent months, or years, secretly praying to win the lottery so you could

stop doing what you were doing and fnally do what you loved? How many o you have elt locked

into a tired, lie-sucking career by a suocating marriage o golden or lead handcus, ear that

youd be judged or ridiculed or changing paths and a lie-stiing lack o belie in your ability to make

a living doing what you love?

Thig is, i thats you, the ecoomy has just served you up a big, at opportuity.

In act, you may never get an opening like this again. A chance to make a bold change, take a shot

at doing what you love, and not be judged or trying. Not that its impossible to change paths

at anytime. Ive done it many times. But, youve got a once-in-a-lietime window here created by

    a once-in-a-lietime event.

The meltdown has everyone re-examining how they earn a living and what they want out

    o their lives and careers.

Promises have been broken on a scale weve not seen since the Great Depression. Expectations have

been destroyed. The old paradigm no longer exists. And, i you lulled yoursel into believing that a

honking pile o money or a seemingly Teon job with a big, established company was your ticket tosecurity, youre likely smack in the middle o a really rude awakening.

Everyones worlds are being shaken, and in this shaking, sometimes violent thrashing, lies a massive

    opportunitythe chance to come alive.

We are ow i the midst o a oce i a geeratio widow.

For those whove never explored a career with equal helpings o passion and prosperity out o a ear

o being judged, unsupported or ridiculed, judgment has been suspended. For anyone whos

decried the lack o time it would take to rebuild their livings around the lie they want to live, time

is your greatest asset. And, or anyone whos elt trapped by a long, emotional investment in a

career you loathe, the slates been wiped clean.

This crisis just served up public justifcation on a platter. Its given you a massive, deensible reason

to explore a radically dierent approach to the way you earn your living. And, i you dont take it

now, you may never have the will to do it again.

Simple truthlie is not all about sacrifce, suering or giving up what matters most in the name

    o being a grown up.

    Passio, purpose ad ulfllmet matter.

Even in this economy. Especially in this economy.

They make us come alive at work and at play. And, pursued the right way, they can be had along

with a healthy serving o prosperity.

With the mass shit in mindset these days, a growing movement o people are learning to live

with less. Theyre reshaping their lives around the concepts o simplicity, instead o excess.

And, along the way, theyre discovering something cognitive scientists and happiness researchers

have known or decades. Theyre actually no less happy living a simplifed existence. In act,

    or many, theyre happier.

Fact is, beyond earning enough to live comortably in the world, more money, merchandise and

power add little to how happy or satisfed we are. Nor do they make us eel a whole lot more

secure. Thats a antasy. In act, to the extent the pursuit o these things takes you away rom other

activities and people who truly do make you come alive, they may very well do the exact opposite.

So, i these thigs aret success, what is?

I wonder what might happen i, instead o holding up money, merchandise and the illusion o

security as the currency o success, you valued relationships, purpose and impact instead.

What might unold i you identifed what you loved to do frst, then tapped the wealth o tools,

strategies and technologies that have only come onto the scene in the last ew years to build

a substantial living around what makes your entire lie smile?

What i, instead o scrambling to fnd another J-O-B that sends you spiraling back into years

o sacrifce in the name o a lie that, in the end, youve already discovered you didnt really want,

you went about crating your career rom this point orward in a very dierent way?

Try this career choice stadard o or size.

Will this choice allow me to:

Spend the greatest amount o time

Absorbed in activities and relationships that fll me up

While surrounding mysel with people I cannot get enough o, and

Earning enough to live comortably in the world?

It sounds so simple. This is the standard Ive used to guide my own evolution rom six-fgure,

beaten down mega-frm attorney to liestyle entrepreneur, blogger, author, copywriter,

marketer and, yes, even yoga teacher oh, and still earn enough to live very comortably in

the world and support my amily in New York.

Fact is, this defitio o success eeps me hoest.

And, with good reason. Its evolved out o thousands o hours o testing and exploring a broad

Its a trick question theyre all the same. They make or great TV specials, but they seem eternally

elusive in real lieespecially that frst one. Because, as long as youre working or someone else,

youll never have the control you want.

Does that mea everyoe should ru out ad become etrepreeurs?

Probably not. Control comes with responsibility and, depending how you bring your ideato lie, varying amounts o risk.

But, heres the thing. Ive been asked a bunch o times how smart it is to walk away rom the

sae option o working or someone else to start your own business, or even begin to build some

kind o independent career and leveragable reputation on the side in this economy.

SaeSAFE? I wat to scream, Are you out o your mid?!

Since when is the sae option handing over the keys to your career to someone else and hoping

that, in challenging times, theyll make the tough decisions in your best interest, rather than in theirbest interest?

Saety, i this cotext, is largely a outgrowth o cotrol.

In times o relative prosperity, most people dont care so much about control. Because, as long as

theres enough to go around, the people who you surrender the ate o your career to dont have to

decide between them and youor the company and you. Theres enough to go around or everyone.

But, i tough facial times, lie right ow

Those same people DO have make tough choices. And, theres a pretty good chance that whats

best or you is the not their driving motivation.

    Whe the goig gets tough

I want to be the one who determines what I do or dont do, whether I have a job

or not and what my relative value is.

I want to be the one to monitor the world, analyze my options and take action to respond

or adapt the direction o my career, my company and my uture.

I want to be the one who chooses who I surround mysel with, why, in what context

    and when, and

I want to be the one to balance short-term risk with long-term vision and opportunity.

I wat to be i cotrol, eve i this ecoomy ESPECIALLY i this ecoomy.

And, somehow, the world perceives that as the riskier path?

Yes, things are challenging. And, I understand there is always risk in building your own path, starting

your own biz in any economy. But, you know what, well all get through it. Things will get better.

In act, in a recent Microsot/Elance survey, nearly 90% o small business owners said theydstill rather work or themselves, and 60% said they expect 2009 to be as good as, i not

better than, 2008. Like Seth Godin notes, It makes it so much easier to win when so many other

    people are dropping out.

Plus, its no secret that, without ail, those who are willing to fnd opportunities, invest and

take chances in challenging markets are very oten those who end up on top when we emerge

    rom the carnage. Right now

I youre in the midst o crisis and your immediate need is to put ood on the table and pay your

Its straight out o Maszlows Hierarchy o Needs.

Its difcult to ocus o passio whe youre worried about losig your home.

And that may mean turning your immediate energies to fnding a band-aid job, the sole purpose

o which is to stop the bleeding. Id never judge anyone or shelving the pursuit o a passionate living

during a time o extreme economic stress that threatens their basic need to survive.

But, heres somethig else to poder as you go looig or that bad-aid job.

In most cases, i youve been laid o, the one thing youve got on your hands is time. People say

that, when youre unemployed, your ulltime job is fnding another job. But, we all know thats

rarely a true representation o how most people spend the 8-12 hours you used to spend working.

With rare exceptio, your search wot tae up every hour o every day.

To begin to build a renegade path on the side, perhaps. And, one o the huge benefts o

the paths I lay out in Career Renegade is that they allow you to tap technology to go beyond

So, i your town has been slammed by mass layos, or plant-closings, and prospects orany kind o similar job are slim, you can oten move beyond the crush o your local economy

o an electrician I recently stumbled upon who set up a blog to share do-it-yoursel (DIY) electrical

The DIY industry is perectly positioned or massive growth in a down economy, because people still

want to fx up things around the house, but they no longer want to pay other people to do it or them.

In act, with so many people now stuck in homes theyd love to leave, but are fnancially lockedinto comes both (a) a concession that theyll be stuck in the same home or years longer that theyd

Now, this gentleman (our electrician riend) oers valuable DIY electrical project inormation on his

blog on a regular basis. That, in turn, established him as an expert and builds a sense o credibility

and trust among those who visit his website. This is likely a big driver o visitors and trafc.

But, as you scroll through the pages, youll also see that, i youd like his specifc advice on a project,

you can actually pay him or his time. In act, 10-minutes costs $27.

So, i our electrician ends up on the phone helping people an hour a day, thats $162 a day.

Do that or 30 days, and its $4,860 a month... working an hour a day rom home. Thats nearly twice

the average annual household income in the U.S., working 7 hours a week!

And, chances are, a small number o people who start out looking or DIY help end up wanting live,

on-the-job help and turn the entire project over.

So, this is a great example o someone mining a dierent aspect o their trade and the growing

demand or inormation to redefne the way they bring that trade to lie and generate income.

    o n a b 2 b l e v e l .The ingenuity o our riend, the electrician/ino-marketer, shows how its possible to mine an

inormation gap thats been greatly expanded by the ailing economy. But, what i your passion

or trade serves not the gaps and needs o individuals, but businesses? Is this still possible

    in this economy?

    Short answerabsolutely!

Lets say youre a designer who ocuses on corporate ID, branding, logo and website design.

Theres a pretty good chance that, unless youre a rock-solid marketer, your business is hurting

    right now.

Lots o local small businesses simply dont want to pay someone on the outside to do their design

work. This will lead clients and prospects to begin to explore DIY design work. Small businesses

will try to get by doing it themselves in an eort to save a ew bucks (lets get past the discussion

o how thats oten a terrible idea or now and stick to the example).

And, while this appears at frst glance to be bad or business, theres an incredible opportunity here

to mine a dierent aspect o your design jones to not only create a new revenue stream, but alsotap the DIY needs o those small businesses and end up with more clients than you can handle.

What might happen i you oered a 4-part educational seminar series, priced at a small raction

o what youd charge to actually do the design work or your clients? The price would be at the

upper end o B2B impulse buy. The topic would be Do It Yoursel Branding, Design, Logo Creation

and Brochure Design or local businesses, and youd run it either at your ofces or the local library,

chamber o commerce or other budget venue?

Chances are, youd get ar more small business owners at that program now than you would have

a year ago. And, when you begin to share a wealth o knowledge and layers o thought that actually

go into the process o doing what you do, a ew things will happen.

Oe, youll quickly establish yoursel as a bona fde expert in the eyes o all who attend.

Two, by delivering a ton o high value inormation, youll cultivate a strong sense o

reciprocity, leading many to eel the desire to someway, someday, pay you back.

And, as the economy recovers, this may well come in the orm o uture business.

Three, a solid chunk o those in attendance will realize that what seems airly

straightorward on the surace is actually a whole lot more involved than they thought.

The more they learn, the more theyll realize they have no business trying to conquer

such an important task themselves, and the more likely theyll be to decide theyd rather

pay the money to have somebody else do it right. And guess who theyll turn to?

Use your crisis time ot oly to fd but to build.

The bigger point is, i you use the large chunk o crisis time that youre not spending trying to

fnd any immediate source o income to:

Research gaps in service, inormation, education, product, community and access

that have been created or broadened by the economic downturn,

Learn how to set up your renegade path on the side, and

Take simultaneous action on this path

nine renega de aCtions to take today.

    1. Dot FreaYou may have let your job, but you havent let YOU! Your skills, abilities, experiences, connections,

knowledge, work ethic and drive go with you. So, i you succeeded by applying these things to a

feld that held little interest to you, imagine what youll be able to achieve when you turn these same

qualities loose on something you love.

    2. Ow Up To Your Passio

Step back and revisit what really makes you come alive. Most o us already know what it is. Weve

just buried it deeply, because we assume we cant earn enough money doing it and think that,

even i we tried, nobody would support the quest. A growing movement o Career Renegades now

obliterates this assumption. Your job is to own up to what you really want to do, and then...

    3. Research Your Passio

You may have a passion or something, but that doesnt mean enough others share that same

passion to make it worth building a career around. Get online and (a) search or people or companies

who are already doing what you want to do and see i they need help, or (b) sur search engines,

orums, social networks, magazines and more or evidence that enough other people share your

passion to make serving them a proftable adventure.

    4. Choose Your Reegade Path

Changes in technology and Internet access over the last fve years have created a wide variety o

renegade paths to proftability. Theyve made it possible to turn things you thought would never

generate much cash into serious businesses and delivered a worldwide market o customers, clients

and colleagues to your doorstep. Learn to leverage this technology and the world becomes a much

richer place (in all senses o the word). With rare exception, making a great living doing what you

Here are a ew examples that cost almost nothing to begin:

Serve the community, inormation or education needs surrounding your passion. Even i

theres no clear conventional way to generate income around your passion, there is oten a

renegade way, and that renegade path very oten requires little or no investment up ront.

You might be able to tap the power o eBooks or paid membership sites to share inormation

about your passion. You might rally people with a shared interest in your passion through

blogging or orums, and then turn that into paid conerences, retreats or meet-upsor bring

products and services to your communitys attention in exchange or a commission on sales.

The beautiul thing is, you can get started or less than $50 and all you need is a computer,

internet access and a desire to share inormation about your passion that others would

value. And, with services that help you either or ree or very little money, you dont even need

to be all that tech savvy to do it.

Find people in business to partner with and share the income. Artist Ann Rea painted

vineyards in Napa, and then partnered with the wineries to display her art in exchange

or a percentage o the sales. This allowed her to launch a career as a very successul artist,

    spending almost nothing up ront.

I your passion leads you to create a product or service, you can make an initial test batcho merchandise or sample services and ask people with existing oot trafc, communities

or audiences to sell your merchandise on consignment or commission.

The point is, even passions that most people thought could never make money can oten

and ace-to-ace worlds just waiting or someone to step up, answer their questions and lead them.

Whether your next step is within someone elses organization or launching your own adventure,

establishing yoursel as a known, go-to person in the area o your passion puts you in the drivers

seatand it costs next to nothing to do. Showcase your passion and thought-leadership, build your

community, and then choose how to leverage your portable, personal brand.

    7. Rally Your Rabbis

Nobody does it alone. In order to succeed in your quest to become a career renegade and rebuild

your livelihood around what you love to do, youll need people on your team on two levels.

Youll need to rally those closest to you to your cause (the economy just opened a whole new chance

to do this). Forget the ludicrous instruction to abandon everyone who disagrees with your quest or

a passionate and prosperous livelihood. Some olks may need to be jettisoned, but other close

riends and amily members arent going anywherenor should they. Identiy the small collection

o people who are committed to you or lie, the ones whos input, negative as it may be, is largely

motivated by concern. Then, listen to their concerns and do the work necessary to rally them to

your cause the way youd prepare or and pitch your vision to your dream venture capitalist.

At the very minimum, resolve to obtain their orbearance and give you enough judgment-ree space

to grow your vision on the side until it proves the viability o your quest to all. It may not be easy,

but the support o those closest to you will make your adventure both more enjoyable and ar more

    likely to succeed.

Beyond your circle o amily and riends, though, youll also need to fnd and connect with one to

fve rabbis, or mentors, whove already achieved what you want to achieve and will agree to help

    guide your evolution.

    8. Master Your Mid

Given equal qualifcations and abilities, whom do you think the job, the support or the unding goes

to? Its the person whos the most confdent, calm, collected, resolute, overtly-passionate and likable.

Want to be that person? Get your mindset act together. Commit to a set o simple daily mindset

practices that will allow you to de-stress, reocus, cultivate lasting peace o mind and remain calm,

cool and collected in nearly any situation or setting.

    9. Get Out O Your Head

The simple truth is that this maniesto, along with every other maniesto, book, blog and course

are useless i all you do with them is read. Theres not magic to success. Its about daily consistent

action. Take six actions every dayeven itty bitty onestoward the attainment o a career

defned by equal helpings o passion and prosperity, and youll be amazed at what unolds in

    the next six months.

o maximum pain. Find the windows and opportunities that have been CREATED by this economy.

While the pundits scream about the sky alling, most people are running or cover, ducking

into doorways and buying umbrellas. But, a small group o savvy entrepreneurs and Career

Renegades are out their with buckets waiting to catch it, bottle it, and sell it.

Theyre fnding, tapping and exploiting gaps, and creating opportunities that will set the stage

or the next great wave o passion-driven, massively prosperous entrepreneurship.

In act, this very realization recently led one o the smartest investors and business thinkers on

the planet, Warren Buet, to share the ollowing dittie in his 2009 Berkshire Letter when talking

about one o his major portolio companies, GEICO:

Tony and I feel like two hungry mosquitoes in a nudist camp. Juicy targets are everywhere.

Questio is... which camp are you i?

Maybe its time to start looking beyond the perceived limitations o the economy, take o

your pundit blinders, grab your bucket and start catching your piece o the supposedly

    alling sky.
