F297 Business Strategy

January Exam 30% of your A Level Based on a pre-release case study – just like you

had in June …But its longer And more detailed! Three 18-20 mark essay questions Plus a 13 mark numerical question With a 10 mark follow up In 2 hours! This unit can be re-sat in June 2013 but this is not

advised

How do you do well? You MUST be awesome at Level 4 before

you sit the paper Be able to structure your essay clearly Fully develop your answers Share your reasoning with the examiner Be sure to answer the actual question

they are asking Know the case study better than you

know yourself!

So…. Onwards to the 5 week plan…

Lets take a look at a lean, efficient, high performing and successful organisation…

Some key facts:

Some key facts: We were once in the Championship Having gone up as League 1 Champions

Gary Hooper played for us before Celtic.. Nigel Adkins managed us before

Southampton… Ex-united players include Kevin Keegan,

Ian Botham and Ray Clemence.

So why am I telling you this? Out of all the football clubs in the

Championship in 2010/11 Scunthorpe United were the second highest performing financially.

We were only £1m in debt! How does this compare to other clubs?

Why are football clubs such unsuccessful businesses? They have a guaranteed weekly revenue stream,

annual sponsorship and pre-season sales They sell a predictable level of merchandise per

season They have a global market They get free publicity on major news networks They have experienced directors and managers Their fixed assets may be owned outright e.g.

stadium or be sponsored e.g. The Etihad. So why do so many clubs face administration?

What is wrong with their Strategy? This is for you to decide…..

What does Strategy Mean? “A plan of action or policy designed to

achieve a major or overall aim” “A plan of action designed to achieve a

vision”

Your task: Each group will be given an example of a club

that is high performing in terms of their league attainment and one that is low performing

You have to analyse the information to decide which club performs the best from a business point of view League success does not always mean business

success. And then make suggestions as to how the under

performing club should improve their strategy in order to perform better in a business sense.
