MARK FLEMMING, AIA PMP | US DEPT OF STATE Mark Flemming is currently acting as the Office Director for Design and Engineering for the Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO). He oversees seven divisions that provide expertise in architecture, space

programming, interior design, sustainability, civil and structural engineering, seismic, blast, geotechnical, telecommunications, electrical and mechanical engineering. A native of Groton, MA, Mark received graduate degrees from Tulane University and the US Naval War College, Newport, RI. Mark is a licensed architect in New Mexico, Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia. He has worked in the private sector as an architect and project manager, and has been a program manager for Department of Defense and other federal agen-cies. Mark is a longtime member of the AIA - Washington Chapter.

MARK GILLIAND, FAIA | SHALOM BARANES ASSOCIATES Mark Gilliand has particular expertise in the design of large-scale master plans, as well as mixed-use, residential and office building projects. He has master planned 12 million square feet and designed dozens of buildings in the nation’s capital

city. Among other types of recognition, his urban projects have garnered numerous national and local design awards.

ROGER LEWIS, FAIA | UNIVERSITY OF MARYLANDPracticing architect and University of Maryland emeritus professor, Roger is also a journalist and regular guest com-mentator on the Kojo Nnamdi radio show. Since 1984, his “Shaping the City” column and cartoons have appeared in The

Washington Post, and the MIT Press recently published the third edition of his 1985 book Architect? A Candid Guide to the Profession.

MATT O’MALLEY | CLARK CONSTRUCTION GROUP LLC Matt O’Malley is a Vice President with Clark Construction Group, LLC, focusing on acquisition of work and preconstruc-tion services for the Washington, DC Region, and the Boston, MA markets. Matt oversees the preconstruction, estimating

and purchasing of curtainwall and other exterior envelope trades for Clark Construction in Washington, DC and other major markets across the US. Matt received a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia, a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Maryland, and a Master of Science in Real Estate at The Johns Hopkins University. Matt is an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University and the University of Maryland.

MIC PATTERSON, LEED AP (BD+C) | ENCLOS Mic Patterson has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology, structural glass facades, and sustainable building practices. He has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse

aspects of advanced facade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures, published by Wiley.

TODD STEIGHNER, AIA | THE JBG COMPANIES Todd Steighner, AIA, has 30 years of experience in the practice of architecture and construction management on commercial and residential projects including 20 years in the Metropolitan Washington Area. Working for the JBG Companies for the last

8 years, Mr. Steighner has provided guidance to development teams during entitlement, design and construction phases.

STEVE WHITE, AIA LEED AP BD+C | AIA DC Steve White is the 2015 president of AIA|DC and Principal and Director of the Washington, D.C. studio for Fentress Architects, a global design firm that passionately pursues the creation of sustainable and iconic architecture. He has over 20

years of experience in the design of museum, office, residential, academic and institutional projects in historic urban centers.

LARRY BARR, AIA | QUINN EVANS Larry Barr, AIA, is President of Quinn Evans Architects. He has focused his professional career on the reuse and transformation of existing buildings. His work has spanned the continuum of pure historic preservation and materials

conservation to the design of new construction within historic contexts. The common thread in his work is redevelopment and transformation to meet contemporary requirements without significantly compromising historic integrity. His clients include some of DC’s premiere monumental building owners including the Smithsonian Institution, Architect of the Capitol, and National Academy of Sciences.

JANET BLOOMBERG, AIA | WASHINGTON ARCHITECTURAL FOUNDATION Janet Bloomberg is a partner and founder of KUBE architec-ture in Washington DC. She has over 25 years of experience in both commercial and residential architecture. She is a native of

the DC area, and attended the University of Virginia and Columbia University. She has taught architectural design at a number of universities in the US, including the University of Virginia. Janet founded KUBE architecture with her partner, Richard Loosle-Ortega, in 2005, and their body of work challenges the norms of daily life, attempting to reinterpret ways of working and living in the built environment. She is the president of the Washington Architectural Foun-dation, and in 2012 she founded the Design in Action program, which places DC high school students in architecture offices for their spring break.

KEVIN CANNON, AIA, LEED AP | FXFOWLE Kevin Cannon has over 20 years of experience as project archi-tect leading the design on a range of projects of various scales and typologies–mixed-use, commercial, cultural, transporta-tion–in the U.S., Canada and the Middle East. Kevin’s approach

is rooted in a comparative analytical process that seeks to test a variety of strategies in order to unearth the design potential and raise the aspirations of each unique project.

BRAD CARY, AIA, LEED | SOM As senior technical architect in SOM’s DC office, Brad Cary supervises technical architectural design from concept through construction on a wide variety of projects, from the master plan and infrastructure for a three block multi-build-

ing development in DC to the Marriott Hall addition to St Albans School. His experience involving blast design of high-end facade systems includes design/build projects for the 1.5 million square feet headquarters of the US Army C4ISR in Aberdeen, Maryland and Lincoln Hall at the National Defense University. Other works include the headquarters of the US Patent and Trade Office, the Park Hyatt Hotel , the renovation and addition to the land-mark Evening Star Building and renovation and in-situ facade replacement of 1801 K Street. Current projects include athletic facilities in Kuwait and ren-ovations of the Consumer Financial Protection Board and the International Monetary Fund in DC.

PEGGY VAN EEPOEL | WEIDLINGER Peggy Van Eepoel, PE, is an associate principal with Weidlinger Associates, Inc. She established and now heads the blast analysis and design group in the firm’s Washington, DC, office. Peggy has provided expertise to the U.S. Depart-

ment of State, GSA, Dept. of Defense, Veterans Administration, and many other public and private entities, developing design solutions to protect their facilities from explosive threats. She has contributed to the design of over 100 blast-protected structures, including embassies, courthouses, military housing and administrative buildings, government headquarters, laborato-ries, hospitals, clinics, and museums. She is the current chairperson of the Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington.
