the conference will focus on “Polymers and Energy”

Nowadays the generation, storage, and saving of energy are is-sues of the major importance for the future of our society and of human beings in general. The problematic role of nuclear power, the steadily diminishing oil resources and the CO2 problem gener-ate a strong demand for renewable resources. Already now wind power as well as photovoltaics play a crucial role in the generation of electricity; these contributions will steadily increase in the fu-ture. However, the strong variability with time of energy from these sources creates an urgent need for new energy storage technolo-gies. In this respect, it is problematic that many of the current bat-tery technologies are still based on toxic or environmentally haz-ardous materials, often with limited availability. Another important aspect is the saving of energy.

Polymers can offer new opportunities for the generation, storage and saving of energy. They are promising materials for these appli-cations due to their intrinsic advantages: cost effective production, good quality, easy processing, light weight, and a large variety of opportunities to tune their properties (e.g., by formulation, choice of monomers, molar mass, constitution). In addition, based on the usage of polymers new solutions otherwise not or hardly acces-sible can be achieved, e.g., flexible solar cells or batteries.

The conference aims at bringing together experts from both aca-demia and industry to present and discuss novel ideas, applica-tions, latest breakthroughs, developments, opportunities, and challenges of the utilization of polymer materials in energy applica-tions.

The scope of the conference covers all aspects of “Polymers and Energy”, with special focus on the synthesis, engineering, and characterization of polymers for all kinds of energy applications.

About the satellite Meeting

Self-assembly and molecular structure are decisive for properties of synthetic polymeric materials and essential functions of biological macromolecules. Despite differences in details, the underlying processes carry in many aspects similarities which can provide important insights. The meeting brings together scientists working in these fields in order to understand these complex ordering processes.
