Self and Peer Assessment Overview
Introduction
The Self and Peer Assessment Building Block allows an Instructor to create an exercise
composed of one or more Questions, each with one or more Criteria, to be presented
to their Students for completion and evaluation.
It is a tool designed to facilitate the objective, analytical, and learning comprehension
skills of students. Reviewing the work of fellow students through criteria-based
reference evaluation allows constructive feedback. The constructive feedback that
students give to and receive from their peers can enhance their comprehension of
the subject material and provide valuable insights into their own efforts.

Creating a Self and Peer Assessment
1. Access Content Area.
2. Point to Create Assessment. Select Self and Peer Assessment from the
drop-down list.

1. Choose New.
2. Type a name for the Assessment in the Name field. Type instructions for the
Assessment in the Instructions Text Editor.
3. Set the Submission Start Date and Submission End Date for assignment
submission by using the date and time fields.
4. Set the Start Date and End Date for the peer evaluations by using the date and
time fields.
5. In the Number of Submissions to Evaluate field, specify the number of peer works
each student will review.
6. Make the Assessment available by selecting Yes.
7. Click Submit.
NOTE:
1. Submission dates must be prior to evaluation dates.
2. You cannot reopen the submission/evaluation period once the
submission/evaluation period has ended.
3. Specify 0 submissions if the assessment is only for self-evaluation only.
4. The system randomly assigns each student the specified number of submissions to
evaluate, there is no way to assign evaluation partner manually.

Adding Question
Students submit answer in response to a particular question. Instructor can create
multiple questions for an assessment
On the Assessment Canvas page,
1. Click Create Question.
2. Enter Question Information, e.g. instruction.
3. Click Submit.

Adding Criteria
Each question must contain at least one criterion students can use when evaluating
other’s response to the question. You must assign a point value for each criterion
1. Click the Contextual menu beside the question. Choose Criteria.
2. Click Create Criteria.

2. Enter Points Possible and select Assign Points. You may also Allow Feedback to
Users.
3. Choose Yes to Allow Feedback to Users.

Monitoring Students progress
View Submissions
The Submissions page displays the student’s submission and allows instructor to
download students’ submissions.
1. In the Control Panel, expand the Course Tools section. Select Self and Peer
Assessment.
2. Select the Assessment, click the contextual menu and choose View Submissions.

1. Click Download All to download submissions along with any files included with the
submissions.
2. Select a student, click the contextual menu to View or Download the submission.

View Evaluations
The Evaluations page displays the evaluations submitted by students and allows
instructor to download students’ evaluation results
1. In the Control Panel, expand the Course Tools section. Select Self and Peer
Assessment.
2. Select the Assessment, click the Contextual Menu and choose View Evaluations.

1. Click Download All to download evaluations in CSV format.
2. Select a student, click the Contextual Menu to View or Download the evaluation.
Note: Do not enroll or un-enroll students after the evaluation state date, because
doing so can negatively affect the results already gathered.

View Results
The Results page displays the average score the student received on the submission,
along with individual scores and feedback. Instructor can download the results
page and transfer the average of all evaluations for each student to the Grade
Center.
1. In the Control Panel, expand the Course Tools section. Select Self and Peer
Assessment.
2. Click the contextual menu and choose View Results.

1. If you want to release the peer assessment grade to grade center, click Send
Results to Grade Center.
