Facilitator

– FACILITATOR Position Description: You are the important person in charge of making sure each of your group members gets to share his/her ideas! You will make sure everyone gets to share his/her image. You will also choose and read a discussion question for your group and make sure every person gets to respond.

Share-Around (long form of whip around)

– Each individual in your group will have the opportunity to share the image he/she chose, and why he/she chose that image.

– The person who is sharing has two minutes to share. Other group members may not interrupt the person who is sharing.

– When the two minutes are over, the Responder has thirty seconds to reflect back what the person shared and thank them for their response.

– Facilitator shares first, and then move around the circle in a clock-wise order.

– Recorder writes down the main ideas of each person’s shared entry, on a separate piece of paper.

Think & Discuss

– What new information did you learn about Native American culture from your group members?

– What were some of the ideas that all of your group members had in common about Native American culture? Were there any different ideas?

– Why are images a powerful way of reflecting on culture?

– In what ways do each of us have some of the “single story” assumptions about this group?

Responder

– RESPONDER Position Description: You are the important person who will reflect back and summarize what each person shared during the image discussion. Then, you will use the response stems to follow up with each person during “think and discuss.”

Recorder

• RECORDER Position Description: You are the important person in charge of recording your group’s ideas! Using an additional sheet of paper, write down the main ideas you hear your group members sharing.

Resource Manager

– RESOURCE MANAGER Position Description: You are the important person in charge of making sure your group members have the materials they need for success! Gather a Chromebook for every person in your group. Then, ask every person if they have their journal and a pencil or pen. If they say no, collect a FREE ONE TIME ONLY pencil from me, and gather paper from therecycled paper bin on the back table. You will also keep time.

Images Associated with Native American Culture

• Instructions: View the following photos, and choose one that you feel best describes Native American culture from your perspective.

• Write an explanation in your journal describing which image you chose and why you chose it. One-half page pure description (observations) and one-half page explanation/reflections on why this image fits your image of Native Americans.
