LSTA GRANT PROGRAM
Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grants are federally funded
through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Administered by the State Library of NC.
Projects must meet goals of the grant program (goals may change).
Can partner with other libraries (decreases matching funds, if applicable).
Several grant categories
EZ Grants: Digitization, Innovation, Planning, and Literacy & Lifelong Learning
Project Grants: Access & Digitization and Literacy & Lifelong Learning
APPLYING FOR AN LSTA GRANT
Identify your library’s need and gather supporting documentation and data to
illustrate the need.
Determine your project goals and how you will measure/assess progress.
Determine what equipment, etc. you will need and get price quotes and specs
from vendors for budget section.
Determine how you will implement the project step-by-step (project activities
section) and develop a timeline for completion. Allow extra time for delays.
Demonstrate how the project aligns with your library’s goals and LSTA’s goals.
Submit grant application by the end of February each year.
Few community colleges apply. Only 3 were awarded this year.
GRANT APPLICATION TIPS
Plan ahead! Don’t wait too late to get vendor quotes. (But don’t get them too early either.) Prices may change after you get the grant.
Secure local administrative support.
Obtain support from other departments involved (i.e. maintenance staff, IT staff, etc.) or grant partners. (CIPA compliance)
You do not need to be or to have a grant writer to apply.
The State Library likes pilot projects! Also tying projects to planning grants.
Innovation grants – must be an idea or a project that no one else has ever done.
Visit the State Library website for more info on LSTA Grants. http://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/ld/grants/lsta.html
Not sure an idea will work? Ask the State Library Staff! Contact RayeOldham at [email protected] for more info and feedback.

VISION AND GOALS
To make the Library a place where students meet, collaborate, and learn.
Goals:
1. Improve functionality and utilization
2. Identify study zones
3. Create a flexible and adaptable environment
4. Increase student access to technology
5. Improve access to a range of information services
LEE CAMPUS LIBRARY PROFILE
7,764 asf with 153 seats
Computers: 16
Table Seats: 72
Soft Seating: 15
Carrels: 12
Computer Classroom Seats: 22
Study Rooms: 4 @ 2-3 seats & 1 @ 4-6
seats
LEE CAMPUS LIBRARYMAJOR FACILITIES ISSUES
COMPUTER CLASSROOM NEEDS 30-35 SEATS
AND FULL SEPARATION
NOT ENOUGH COMPUTERS
STUDY ROOMS
Study rooms are too small and more are needed.
Sound travels between study rooms.
Need collaborative study space for 4+ students.
Current study room size is appropriate for 1-2 students.
Need more silent study. Tables are too close.
STUDY TABLE ARRANGEMENT EXPERIMENT
Experimented with removing some chairs and tables to allow more
breathing room and to reconfigure study table area.
2 chairs per table (12 tables total) – mixed feedback
2 long tables (6 tables each) – most did not like it
4 study pods (groupings of 3 tables clustered) – few responses
4 short tables (groupings of 3 tables in a row) – few responses
Fewer tables (took out 3 tables and left 9) – more space
Create your own area – students did not rearrange as we had hoped
Decision: Go with fewer tables and vary seating with 2 or 4 chairs per table
OTHER ISSUES
Wifi does not work well (IT issue)
Staff offices are too small (sharing
offices)
Display space is needed
Lock down space is needed for
security
STUDENT FEEDBACK
Seating is not comfortable
Not enough space to spread out
Not enough silent study spaces or places to work with groups
Sound from computer classroom interrupts studying
Wifi on campus is terrible
Want access to food and drink
FACULTY FEEDBACK
More and larger study rooms are needed
Need multimedia presentation equipment
Video conferencing for faculty is needed
Larger computer classroom is needed
Faculty-only space would be very useful
Need better Wifi
LEE CAMPUS RECOMMENDATIONS –
SHORT TERM
Remove some chairs from study tables
Add 4 fast track computers with printer at entry
Consolidate collection
Locate a counter/table with electrical to recharge mobile devices
Locate display space & vending to lobby
Reassign office next to Director for small study room
LEE CAMPUS RECOMMENDATIONS –
MEDIUM TERM
Relocate Law Library and faculty offices
Relocate most stacks to Law Library area, opening up main study area
Relocate IT space (server room/storage/conference room) and reassign for Library computer classroom
Convert current computer classroom to a Maker Space for group projects
MORE LEE CAMPUS
RECOMMENDATIONS
Add 4 fast track computers
Spread out tables
Intersperse soft seats
Add 6 computers & 6 study carrels
Separate study zones with shelving
Add recharge table
Add doors for lockdown space
Larger computer classroom
Future coffee shop
LEE CAMPUS RECOMMENDATIONS –
LONG TERM
Build new library: 17,000 asf / 26,000 gsf
Explore feasibility of adding another floor to current building, or
Include library in future new building, ideally a student support services building
HARNETT CAMPUS LIBRARY PROFILE
2,100 asf with 54 seats
Computers: 10
Table Seats: 24
Soft Seating: 4
Carrels: 6
Classroom Seats: potential for 20 in
adjacent classroom
Study Rooms: 2 @ 4-6 seats each
HARNETT CAMPUS LIBRARY MAJOR FACILITIES ISSUES
NOT ENOUGH COMPUTERS
Not enough collaborative
study space No separation for silent study
NO PRIVATE STAFF OFFICE – SPACE IS A
COMBINATION OF STORAGE, OFFICE,
BREAK ROOM, AND STUDENT ID ROOM
OTHER ISSUES
No space to expand collection
Location not central on campus
No lockdown space
Library is odd shape (triangular)
STUDENT FEEDBACK
Lack of library instruction is a problem
Need bigger study rooms for 4-5+
Health Sciences students need access to PCs,
printer/copier, phone access to librarians
More electrical outlets needed
More collaborative space
Need separated silent study area
Need better student lounge with access to food
Need better Wifi
FACULTY FEEDBACK
Health Sciences Center needs support
Library location is inconvenient
More study rooms and collaborative space needed
Students need a place to go between classes
No food on campus
HARNETT CAMPUS
RECOMMENDATIONS – SHORT TERM
Add library instruction computer lab in adjacent classroom (LSTA Grant)
Equip study suite in Health Sciences Center with computers, printer/copier, and
phone access to library (LSTA Grant)
Add one fast track computer at entry
Reassign 2 classrooms next to library for collaborative study and Maker Space
Use office/storage area for lock down space
FUTURE LIBRARY COMPUTER LAB &
OUTSIDE COLLABORATIVE SPACE
HARNETT CAMPUS
RECOMMENDATIONS – MEDIUM TERM
Reconfigure 3 classrooms adjacent to library for expansion
Add a private office
Relocate bookstore to student lounge
Convert current bookstore into coffee shop
HARNETT CAMPUS LIBRARY RECOMMENDATIONS
HARNETT CAMPUS
RECOMMENDATIONS – LONG TERM
Build new library: 7,000 asf; 10,000 gsf
Locate central on campus
Other departments to co-locate:
Students Services
Student Lounge
Open Computer Lab
Café
CONCLUSION
LSTA Grant funds are available to fund library improvement projects
that fit LSTA goals
Library use has changed, and facilities must change to keep up
Larger space is needed to accommodate more diverse functions:
Collections
Individual and collaborative study
Information and digital literacy instruction
Central access point for all things information related
Place for students to study and relax between classes
WE MUST CHANGE
TO KEEP UP WITH CHANGE
“Libraries like all other institutions must grow and adapt to changing environments and conditions. The rate of change in the world today and in our knowledge of it is incredibly fast. We cannot afford to let our libraries slip behind.”
– John F. Kennedy, 1963
