…getting a better education…having a family…being financially secure when you retire

these are outcome goals…

convert outcome goals to SMART behavior goals

S—specificM—measurableA—achievableR—relevantT—time-framed

SMART goals

outcome goal: to be physically fit

•specific—exercise? jogging

•measurable—how far? how long? 1 mile

•achievable—realistic? 11-12 minutes

•relevant—suits interests & needs, is jogging something you can do? do you like it? yes

•time-framed—indicate time for activity to occur every day, starting Monday

SMART goal: jog 1 mile in 11-12 minutes every day, starting Monday

homework:Formal Goal Settingpgs. 31-33…look at the goals that you have set using the General Goal Setting activity…are they outcome goals?…how can you modify them to be SMART goals…complete the Formal Goal Setting activity using the information that you have already accumulated
