tote proceeDS In June 2011, the Horserace Totalisator Board, known commonly as the Tote, was sold by government to Betfred. The government committed that 50% of the net proceeds from the sale would be distributed to racing – the final element of which was received in may 2014. In total, the racing industry received £81,680,792 of net proceeds from the sale, which were allocated to two entities to create a meaningful long-term legacy for the industry.
THe BrITIsH HorserAcIng grAnT scHeme The British Horseracing grant scheme supports worthwhile projects involved in, and associated with, the British thoroughbred racing and Breeding industries.
THe rAcIng foundATIonThe racing foundation was established in January 2012 to achieve a lasting legacy for British racing from the Tote sale – and makes grants to charities associated with the uK horseracing and thoroughbred breeding industry, supporting work in social welfare, training and education, racehorse welfare, equine science research, heritage and culture.
AsofMay2014,theFoundationhasreceived£77,895,524ofBritishRacing’sshareofthenetproceedsfromthesaleoftheTote.TheTrusteesareinvestingthecapitalwiththeaimofgeneratingasustainableincomestreamthatwillbeusedtofundcharitableactivitiesassociatedwithBritishhorseracing.TheFoundationmadeitsfirstgrantsinMarch2013andupto30thJune2014hadawardedgrantstotalling£1.2million.
