Welcome to Factory’s revitalized 2012/13 Season. This year is a time

of change, challenge and reflection

and is an opportunity to ask who we

are, how we came to be who we are,

and who we want to become. Theatre

is where questions, ideas, stories and

imagination intersect to engage us

in a dialogue with ourselves and

our community.

As playwrights explore, shape and

commit their imagination to the

page, new plays are born. Through

collaboration, creative teams bring

these words to the stage. This

season, we are very excited to be

collaborating with great artists from

many disciplines. Both of us have

been long-time artistic associates of

Factory, as well as friends and partners

over the years, but nothing thrills us

more than to be finally entering into a

playwright–director relationship. And

we couldn’t imagine a better way to

begin the season than with the world

premiere of Every Letter Counts. Next

up is an exciting new partnership with

the award-winning Acting Up Stage Company in a co-production of the

Vancouver hit Do You Want What I

Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata by

Veda Hille and Bill Richardson and

directed by Amiel Gladstone. Then,

we team up with playwright Nicolas Billon and director Ravi Jain to

produce Iceland, the SummerWorks

Festival 2012 audience favourite.

We proudly end the season with

the world premiere of Playwright-

in-Residence Amy Lee Lavoie’s

Stopheart, directed by Edmonton-

based Ron Jenkins.

Finally, it is only when you – the

audience – come to the theatre that

the process is complete. You are the

final essential collaborator who plugs

into the playwrights’ imaginations and

surrenders to their world. Ultimately,

we bring this thing called theatre to

life TOGETHER. Through this process,

we create a larger vision for the

theatre – Factory Theatre – where we

imagine, work and realize this dream

for the future together.

Memory. Mortality. Imagination.

In her search for inspiration, Bunny

the power of words. He has given her

the power to shape her own destiny.

She was a founding member and Artistic Director of fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company and is currently Artistic Director of Cahoots Theatre Company and a member of Factory’s Interim Artistic Team. Skidding. Kidding. Unforbidding.

Growing up in a small town is hard.

Growing up “different” in a small

town in Northern Ontario called South

Porcupine is even harder. Stopheart

is a heart-wrenching side-splitting

dark comedy.

Amy Lee Lavoie is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. Rabbit Rabbit, conceived in her first year at NTS, was part of Infinitheatre’s Pipeline series, CanStage’s Ideas and Creation Festival, SummerWorks and the Edmonton Fringe. It received its premiere production with Infinitheatre, earning Amy Lee two MECCA’s for Best Text and the Revelation Award. She was a Canada Council Playwright-in-Residence at Factory Theatre during 2011-12, a member of Factory’s Natural Resources creation group, a member of the Playwriting Forum at Citadel Theatre and a member of Cahoots Theatre’s Playwrights’ HotHouse.

For over four decades, Factory theatre has developed and produced someof the finest theatrical works in our national canon and been home to some of the most gifted and prolific playwrights in our country.

In any given year, more than 50,000 patrons come to Factory’s historic Victorian

mansion at the corner of Bathurst and Adelaide Streets (in the heart of Toronto’s

cultural west-end district) – an inviting, inclusive environment where ideas and

imagination intersect.

Factory Theatre is unique in that it is committed solely to the development and

production of Canadian plays through staged readings, workshops, Natural

Resources (resident creation groups), writers’ retreats, residencies, Factory Wired

(festivals of new work in progress), and ultimately premiere productions.

The Factory Theatre play development program, led by Company Dramaturge

Iris Turcott, is committed to the long-term investment of playwrights and

creators and Canadian work that celebrates our diversity by engaging, provoking,

entertaining, and inspiring our artists, audience and the community at large.

Factory is not only “the home of the Canadian playwright” but is dedicated to

serving our community by building a strong neighbourhood identity in our role

as a cultural hub. Partnerships with local schools and businesses and initiatives,

such as our Neighbours Nights and Curtain Raiser events, are what ground us as

a remarkable artistic resource and cultural institution.
