What are they?Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen veins and muscle around your anus or in youranal canal. Your anal canal is a short, muscular tube with blood vessels that connects yourrectum (back passage) with your anus. Piles can develop when this tissue around the rectalvain becomes swollen, possibly as a result of straining on the toilet. Sometimes, piles can bepainful and bleed if the rectal vain get ruptured.

Piles are also common during and after pregnancy. They may develop due to changes in thehormones (chemicals) in your body and the increased pressure in your abdomen (tummy). They usually get better once the baby is born.

You can get piles at any age, but they’re most common in people aged between 45 and 65.It’s difficult to know exactly how many people get piles

1: Internal Piles : Internal piles are usually not painful but these bleed when they areirritated such as during the passage of hard stools. They can be classified into fourgrades:

2: External Piles: Externalpiles present as a swellingoutside the anus. Its createirritation and itching. Thesecan be painful sometimes andusually do not bleed.

There are of two types piles:

Grade 1- there are small inflammations, usually inside the lining of the anus. They are not visibleGrade 2 - larger than grade 1hemorrhoids, but also inside the anus. When passing a stool, they may getpushed out, but return unaidedGrade 3 - often called 'prolapsedhemorrhoids'; these appear outside theanus. The patient may feel themhanging out. They can be pushed backin if the patient presses with their fingerGrade 4 - these cannot be pushed backin and need to be treated by a doctor. They are large and stay outside the anusall the time.

Internal Hemorrhoids are Classified into Four Grades:

What causes hemorrhoids (piles)?

Piles develop when the veins in your anal canal become swollen. This can happen for a number of reasons, including:

1. Increased pressure in your abdomen (tummy), for example when you’repregnant or giving birth, in constipation , hyperacidity .

2. Straining to empty your bowels, for example if you have constipation3. Ageing – as you get older you may be more likely to get piles because your

rectal vain weakens.4. Diarrhea lasting a long time5. Long-term coughing that increase the intra-abdominal pressure hence

develop piles.6. Having a family history of piles

Some factors makes the piles worse like:

1. Frequently lifting heavy objects2. Long periods of time sitting or travelling

Piles can occur at any age, but are more common in older people. They affectboth men and women. In fact, most people suffer from piles at some time in theirlife, but usually they are nothing more than a temporary problem. Many expertsbelieve that they are caused by continuous high pressure in the veins of the body, which occurs because humans stand upright.

Who gets piles?

They are particularly common inpregnancy because of the additionalpressure from the baby, and becauseof hormonal changes. Sometimes theyresult from straining hard to passfaces, which is more likely if you donot eat enough fiber, or lifting heavyweights. They are not caused by sittingon hot radiators or cold, hard surfaces,or by sedentary jobs. A family history,as with many other health-relatedproblems, is frequently found and islikely to be a significant risk factor fordeveloping piles.

Are there any homeopathy medicines that

can help piles?

Answer :

Yes , homeopathic treatments can help to treat piles.

Why does the skin around my anus get itchy

when I have piles?

Answer :

Itching is often a symptom of piles. The itching occur due to the

inflammatory changes that develops around the swollen rectal vain by

the contact of faeces while passing stool.

How do I know it’s just piles?Piles often cause bleeding, but the blood tends to be on the paper or the pan, oron the edge of your stool. It tends to be bright red and you may also pass mucus. The bleeding of piles is often linked to pain, itching or soreness just inside yourbottom or on the skin around it. You may also notice a lump protruding from yourbottom. One kind of pile (called an external pile ) can cause a sudden, intenselypainful lump just outside your anus. The pain usually settles on its own within 2-3days.

It’s always important to take notice of bleeding while passingstool, because it can be an early warning sign of cancer of thebowel. If you’ve never had piles before, you need to get itchecked by your doctor even if the symptoms are typical of piles(see above). You should also see your doctor quickly if:

•The blood is dark red or blackish•The blood is mixed in with the stool•The bleeding persists and you don’t have any pain, lump or itch•Your stools have become looser, if you’re going more often, formore than a couple of weeks•You’ve also gone off your food or lost weight

When do I need to worry?

High-fibre diet: If you aim to eat a high-fibre diet and drink plenty of water(between six and ten glasses a day), you should be able to keep your faeces soft, which will help you pass them without straining. Sometimes your doctor or dieticianwill recommend a fibre supplement to help you.Avoid straining on the toilet: Try not to strain (push too hard) when you go to thetoilet; it is better to try to pass stool only when your body is ready to do so.

What can I do to prevent or treat piles?

Because piles are not always cured after just onetreatment, the symptoms might be caused bythe piles recurring. You might have been given afollow-up treatment, If, however, you developbleeding many weeks after your hemorrhoidshave successfully been treated, you should notautomatically assume that your piles haverecurred. Bleeding from or around the rectumcan also be caused by a variety of otherconditions, and you should consult your doctorif you are in doubt.

What should I do if I notice bleeding

from my rectum after being treated

for piles?
