What is the National Heavy Vehicle Charging Pilot? The National Heavy Vehicle Charging Pilot (the National Pilot) is an innovative industry partnership testing potential direct road user charging options for heavy vehicles. Two on-road trials are being delivered between 2019 and 2021. What are the on-road trials testing? The Small Scale On-Road Trial commenced in July 2019 and concluded in January 2020. This trial: collected distance, mass (weight) and location data from vehicles’ telematics (distance recording) devices. tested the feasibility of generating mock invoices using this data gauged participants’ experience of a potential new charging system. What is the National Heavy Vehicle Charging Pilot?The National Heavy Vehicle Charging Pilot (the National Pilot) is an innovative industry partnership testing potential direct road user charging options for heavy vehicles.Two on-road trials are being delivered between 2019 and 2021.

What are the on-road trials testing?The Small Scale On-Road Trial commenced in July 2019 and concluded in January 2020. This trial:

Twelve heavy vehicle operators, contributing 259 vehicles across Australia participated in the trial. The Department is currently recruiting participants for the Large Scale On-Road Trial which will commence during 2020. Up to 100 operators and more than 1,000 heavy vehicles across all states and territories are expected to participate. This trial will test a

wider range of data collection methods and will include operators who do not currently have telematics installed.
