DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In Applied Mathematics:Maye ElmardiThesis Title: Topics in relativistic cosmology: cosmology on the past lightcone and in modified gravitation

Maye Elmardi obtained her BSc degree in Physics from the University of Khartoum (2004) and her Postgraduate Diploma from AIMS (2008). She subsequently joined the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at UCT, graduating with an MSc in cosmology in 2010, and continuing with her doctoral work the following year. Maye Elmardi’s thesis explores some hot topics in relativistic cosmology. She develops a technique to rewrite the cosmological field equations, usually expressed in theoretical coordinates, using quantities that can be directly observed.

The technique makes the calculations of the cosmological parameters easier. She also discusses the problems associated with standard cosmology based on General Relativity, such as the existence of dark matter and dark energy, and offers some alternative solutions in the form of modified gravitational theories known as f(R) gravity.

Supervisor: Professor C Clarkson (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics)Co-supervisor: Dr J Larena (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics)

In Physics:*Andriniaina Narindra RasoanaivoThesis Title: Gluon radiation beyond Poisson using MHV techniques

Andriniaina Rasoanaivo holds the following Physics degrees: a BSc(Hons) with distinction from the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar; an MSc with distinction from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, South Africa; and an MSc from the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Canada. He won the Stephen Hawking Award from AIMS and holds a Science Faculty PhD Fellowship from UCT, joining the Department of Physics in 2015. Andriniaina Rasoanaivo’s thesis aims to improve the understanding of the state of matter called quark-gluon plasma (QGP) which existed at the very beginning of the universe. This plasma exists only at extremely high temperature and/or density, and is composed of freely interacting quarks and gluons, which are the fundamental constituents of matter. To recreate conditions similar to those of the early universe. CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva accelerates massive ions near the speed of light then smashes them together to melt into a quark-gluon plasma. In his research, Andriniaina Rasoanaivo introduces a new theoretical approach for studying the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. His work focuses on the interaction between a highly energetic quark with the quark-gluon plasma which can be compared with the experiments conducted at the LHC.

Supervisor: Dr WA Horowitz (Physics)

In Statistical Sciences:*Babooshka ShavazipourThesis Title: Multi-objective optimisation under deep uncertainty

Babooshka Shavazipour holds BA and MA degrees in Applied Mathematics from universities in Iran. He joined the Department of Statistical Sciences at UCT in 2014 for his PhD studies. Before joining UCT, he worked in some universities in Iran as a mathematics lecturer. Babooshka Shavazipour’s thesis focuses on multiple conflicting criteria in decision-making under higher levels of uncertainty, which is called “deep uncertainty”. In such situations, the decision-maker has no idea, or has a very little knowledge, about the outcomes or the probability of some key parameters of the problem (e.g. related to the future). Deep uncertainty in these complex problems is often ignored, or limited to the lower levels of uncertainty. This thesis introduces a novel mathematical approach to deal with such complex problems. This method can be used in problems with long-term planning horizons, such as strategic decision-making problems. To examine the power of the proposed methodology in real cases, the proposed structure was applied in the sugarcane industry to analyse the infrastructure of the sugar-bioethanol supply chain under deep uncertainty. It was also used to examine a case study based on the South African Sugar Industry.

Supervisor: Emeritus Professor TJ Stewart (Statistical Sciences)

In Tertiary Physics Education:Philip Brian SoutheyThesis Title: “Concept” and “Context”: Toward modelling understanding in Physics Education research

Philip Southey holds a BSc Physics and a BSc(Hons) Astrophysics from UCT, a BA PPE from Oxford University, and an MSc in Physics Education from UCT. He began studying toward his PhD in 2013. Philip Southey’s thesis is concerned with the modelling of the context sensitivity of students’ understanding of physics (and mathematics) concepts. It consists of

three empirical studies of (i) vector addition; (ii) basic mechanics concepts; and (iii) a mathematical group. In each case, the notion of “understanding” is interrogated by using a variety of models adopted from physics education research, math education research, cognitive linguistics, cognitive psychology and ordinary language philosophy. Philip Southey demonstrates that while all theoretical perspectives are valuable, certain models of “concept”, “context” and “understanding” are more productive than others in explaining the context sensitivity of student understanding in physics education research.
