Page 14: Faculty and Staff Orientation

Help students stay in school and succeed to graduation by using ASPIRE for prevention & early intervention:

Offer Support - Encourage students to call ASPIRE, talk to a counselor, take advantage of the resources available to them for balancing school

and life.

Be Proactive – Look out for signs that a student may need help:•Poor performance

•Late assignments

•Frequent absences

•Concerning statements

Pay Attention – What is the student’s reasoning for poor performance:•Personal/Family issues

•Practical issues

•Life in general

•Crisis-related

How could the ASPIRE Program help in these situations?

• Claudia turns in an assignment late for the third time.  When you question why, she states that she was kicked out of her parents’ home.

• Bernardo misses two weeks of class.  He later tells you that he was arrested for a DUI.

• Cynthia tells you that she may have to drop your class because she doesn’t have reliable childcare.

It is difficult to determine the impact of an unexpected and traumatic event. People can respond to the same traumatic event in many different ways. In such events, ACI would have a professional counselor be readily available to help students cope.

Examples Include:•Death of a student/faculty/staff member•Severe injury•Prolonged/severe illness•School violence•Any traumatic event that impacts student body
