Learning Outcome:
Attendees will examine teaching strategies that increase student engagement
Objectives:
1. Apply strategies for conveying and sustaining caring using high tech classrooms
2. Discuss innovative evidence-based technology methods of engaging students
3. Employ debriefing techniques for meaningful student learning
4. Teach students to contribute to their own learning using novel classroom
methods
5. Provide faculty support to facilitate student engagement and retention
UK College of Nursing Continuing Education is holding the 13th Annual Faculty
Development Workshop at the UK Bio-Pharmacy Complex and the UK College of Nursing.
This workshop will feature national speakers. Other presenters include respected Kentucky
nurse leaders as well as distinguished UK College of Nursing faculty.

Accreditation
The University of Kentucky, College of Nursing is accredited as a provider of
continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s
Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).
This educational activity is offered for a maximum of 18.85
ANCC contact hours.
The Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) approves The
University of Kentucky, College of Nursing (UKCON) as a
provider as well. ANCC and KBN approval of a continu-
ing nursing education provider does not constitute endorse-
ment of program content nor commercial sponsors. The University of Ken-

Workshop Speakers
Kathleen Sitzman, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN
Dr. Sitzman is a professor at East Carolina University College of Nursing.
Her research interests include caring science in clinical practice and higher ed-
ucation as well as best practices in online education. Dr. Sitzman co-edited
with Dr. Jean Watson, “Caring Science, Mindful Practice: Implementing Watson’s Hu-
man Caring Theory”, where she and Dr. Watson offer practical project examples
integrating Watson’s caring science and caritas processes.
Kristina T. Dreifuerst, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF
Dr. Dreifuerst received her PhD in nursing from Indiana University and her MSN
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is now an Associate Professor in
the College of Nursing at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. The teaching
method she developed, Debriefing for Meaningful Learning (DML), has been
adopted by schools of nursing and interdisciplinary schools in health sciences
across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom for use in simulation
and other clinical settings.
Deborah Sampsel, DNP, MSN, BA, RN
Dr. Sampsel is the Chief Officer of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at
the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. She is also the Director of
Research and innovation at the Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care.
She is known for her visionary leadership, creativity with technology, and
design of experiential learning environments. She has completed numerous
research projects and initiatives involving telemedicine, simulators, sensors,
and internet-based programming.
Elisabeth Shelton, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF
Dr. Shelton is Associate Dean Emerita in the West Virginia University School of
Nursing and a recognized expert in nursing education. She developed, implement-
ed, and evaluated a model of student retention, which considers background
characteristics of students, their internal traits, and sources and types of external
supports in predicting their persistence and potential for academic success . Dr.
Shelton developed the “Perceived Faculty Support Scale”, the first instrument to
measure faculty support from the student’s perspective.
Amy Hall, PhD, RN, CNE
Amy Hall, has been a nursing educator for 20 years. She is a co-author of
Fundamentals of Nursing and has expertise in curricular design and evaluation.
Amy is the White Family Endowed Professor at the University of Evansville in
Evansville, Indiana. She is currently leading the nursing faculty through curric-
ular revision, which includes implementing a more conceptual approach in the
baccalaureate nursing program. Amy also frequently teaches study abroad
courses in England and China and serves as a research consultant for a local
hospital where she helps nurses implement evidence-based practice changes.
Workshop Speakers
Jennifer Cowley, MSN, RN
Jennifer Cowley is a senior lecturer at the University of Kentucky College of
Nursing. She has nearly 25 years' experience as a clinical instructor and lecturer .
She co-initiated, co-coordinated, and taught in the undergraduate
pathopharmacology course for five years. Cowley was awarded the 2010
Provost's Outstanding Teaching Award and the College of Nursing's
Louise J. Zegeer Award in the spring of 2010.
Amanda Culp-Roche, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC
Amanda Culp –Roche joined the University of Kentucky College of Nursing as
an instructor in the online RN-BSN track. She has over 20 yeas of experience as
an RN in acute care, home health, and supervision. Her research interests include
eLearning initiatives in nursing education.
Refund/ Cancellation Policy
A full refund, less a $25 processing fee, will be issued for all cancellations received or postmarked
at least one week prior to the course date. No refunds are issued thereafter.
Cancellations received the day of the course are not eligible for a refund.
UK College of Nursing Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel a course when circum-
stances are warranted. In such a case, a full refund will be issued. UK College of Nursing is not
responsible for hotel, plane, car, or other such fees.

Parking for the event will be available in Pavilion A UK Medical Center Parking Garage. Parking

istrants prior to the conference.
