WHAT IS F1000PRIME?

History:

“Faculty of 1000”: Started with 1000 Faculty Members writing recommendations of published articles.

2002: F1000 Biology

2006: F1000 Medicine

2010: Merged

2012: Renamed to F1000Prime

Now: Faculty of nearly 6,000 leading experts, assisted by over 5,000 associates. Covers over 40 disciplines and more than 3,700 journals

FACULTY MEMBER PROFILE

Page 8: Faculty of 1000 : Eva Amsen

• Faculty Members (FMs) select, rate and comment on the most interesting and important research articles (2-3% of the life science literature)

• FMs assign one of three positive ratings: Exceptional (3 stars), Very Good (2 stars) or Good (1 star)

• Relevant classifications added (e.g. changes clinical practice)

• FMs’ recommendation text is a short, expert, plain English recommendation written for a global readership

• Articles are ranked by F1000Prime scores and browse-able by section

• Customized searching and alerting with MyF1000

USING THE F1000PRIME RECOMMENDATIONS

F1000Prime recommendations are positive: they are meant to highlight and recommend literature that is selected by top researchers in biology and medicine.

Database with more than 150,000 records.

On average, 1,500 new recommendations are contributed by the Faculty each month.

How can we use these recommendations?

USING THE F1000PRIME RECOMMENDATIONS

Overview of topics within a field:

• F1000Prime Reports – publishes reviews that expand on the recommended literature coverage of F1000Prime. Meant to provide highlights on one topic.

Discovery – find new articles to read:

• Customisable smart search feature on F1000Prime site.

• Mobile app – discovery on the go

• Coming soon: integration of recommendations into own literature discovery and writing process.

POST-PUBLICATION PEER REVIEW AT F1000

F1000Prime:Using post-publication peer review for discovery of recommendedarticles, published across different journals in biology and medicine.

Selected experts (F1000 Faculty Members) choose articles to review.

Soon: integrate recommendations into collaborative writing tool.

F1000Research:Using post-publication peer review as formal peer review of new research published by F1000Research.

Experts invited to review articles.

WHAT IS F1000RESEARCH?

•F1000Research is an Open Science publishing platform for life scientists, offering immediate publication and transparent refereeing, avoiding editorial bias and ensuring the inclusion of all source data.

•F1000Research has a prestigious international Advisory Board of more than 1300 of the most eminent names in biology and medicine. Most are also F1000Prime Faculty Members.

KEY FEATURES OF F1000RESEARCH

• Immediate publication

• Transparent refereeing

• No editorial bias

• Data included

• Indexed in PubMed

Page 23: Faculty of 1000 : Eva Amsen

TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING

• Most journals publish articles after they pass peer review.

• The peer review process can take months – sometimes years.

• After rejection, start over again with another journal.

• This delays publication.

Page 24: Faculty of 1000 : Eva Amsen

F1000RESEARCH PUBLISHING

• F1000Research articles are published online after an in-house pre-refereeing check, on average, within 7 days.

• Peer review and revisions are carried out publicly.• Invited referees judge whether the work is scientifically sound. • Articles with sufficient positive referee reports are indexed in PubMed.

TWO TYPES OF POST-PUBLICATION PEER REVIEW AT F1000

F1000Prime F1000Research

Publishes recommendations of articles that

have already been published (in any journal)

Open Science publication platform that publishes

original research articles.

Subscription service - subscribers can read the

reviews

Open Access (with open peer review and open

data) – everyone can read the reviews

Recommendations written by Faculty Members Peer review carried out by invited experts

(some are Faculty Members, some are not)

Articles have already passed peer review when

the Faculty Members write their evaluations.

The post-publication peer review IS the formal

peer review process.

Goal: Provide a service to help researchers

discover interesting articles within the life

sciences.

Goal: Provide a platform where researchers

publish their original work under transparent

and fair conditions.
