DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In Music:Cecilia Mayokun DurojayeThesis title: Evoked emotional responses in the performance practices of selected Yorùbá dùndún ensembles

Cecilia Durojaye completed her BA (Musicology) and MA (Music Education) degrees at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. She began full-time study towards her PhD at UCT in 2015. Cecilia Durojaye’s thesis makes a unique contribution in combining ethnomusicological and music psychological research to explore strategies used by performers of Yorùbá dùndún ensembles in Nigeria to evoke emotional responses in their participants and listeners. Having used a variety of mixed methods, she has established that the dùndún, commonly known as the ‘talking drum’, is not only involved in sending sonic text messages but also contributes substantially to processes related to evoking emotive responses in performers and listeners. She shows how emotive communication is influenced by common cultural cues embedded in, for example, oriki (praise poetry) and orí wíwú (literally: ‘swelling of the head’; here referring to peak

emotional experiences). Ms Durojaye’s findings indicate that dùndún musicians use specific musical and non-musical strategies to induce particular responses in their participants and listeners. Her thesis also shows how combining indigenous knowledge and cognitive music perception can offer new ways of understanding communication between performers and listeners.
