Office of Academic Affairs• The policy for non-tenure track faculty (Campus Policy II-13) was

announced by the Chancellor on December 30. The academic departments are working on their departmental policies, and to date, three departments have submitted draft policies for review and approval.

• • Materials to assist Corporate Development Council members in

marketing Missouri S&T within their corporations have been sent to all CDC members.

• At the December Commencement Ceremony, Dr. David C. Van Aken was named Curators Teaching Professor and Dr. Rajiv Mishra was named Curators Professor.

• A solicitation for nominations and review were carried out to determine the campus nominee for the University of Missouri Thomas Jefferson award. This year’s nominee is Dr. Larry Gragg.

• A solicitation for nominations and review were carried out to determine the campus nominee for the President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching. This year’s nominee is Dr. Frances (Dee) Hammerlie Montgomery.

• Spring 2009 semester enrollment expected to be at least 1.5% over Spring 2008

• Freshman Applications are up 305 (15.5%) applications over last fall

• Transfer applications are equal to last year

• Freshman deposits are up 6 deposits over last years record

Global Learning

Distance & Continuing Education• Expanding Your Horizons was held on November 21,

2008 with over 650 seventh and eighth grade girls and their adult leaders attending from 25 schools across the state of Missouri.  Keynote speaker was Astronaut Stephanie Wilson and included a special presentation delivered from Astronaut Sandra Magnus aboard the International Space Station.

• During November and December 2008, the Association of State Dam Safety Officials used Missouri S&T as the internet broadcast site for two interactive seminars. These “Webinars” reached over 150 participants throughout the US.   The programs were archived for a period of two weeks with additional participants accessing the material asynchronously.

New international student orientation was held January 5. The number of new international students that arrived & “checked in” as of the orientation date is shown below for the past several years.

• 2009-10 Chancellor’s Fellowship allocations have been distributed to the graduate programs.

• We are currently administering the department-level GTA workload and supervision survey.

• 213 MS/PhD graduate degrees and 128 graduate certificate completions were processed in FS08.

• Internet bandwidth for the campus has been increased to 200 megabits.

• The Residential Network (ResNet) is scheduled to be upgraded from the current 45 megabit link to use the 200 megabit link during Spring 2009.– This will allow residential students to have an improved Internet

experience in the evening. During the day, mission critical business will still have priority, create a more pleasant experience for everyone.

• The team will provide one-on-one support for many of the web-related tools on campus (Documentum, Movable Type, etc.)

• Collaborative efforts result in new instructional capabilities.– Civil 125

• two additional screens and projectors• instructors now have the ability to send different images

to each of the three projectors

• FY09 activities through the end of December and a year-over-year comparison are as follows:

– Proposals awarded in total dollars: $29.1M (up 23.2%)

– Number of proposals awarded and amendments: 201 (up 11.7%)

– Proposals submitted in total dollars: $78.3M (down 4.2%)

– Number of proposals submitted: 276 (up 0.7%)

– Research expenditures: $18.5M (down 2.3%)

– F&A recovered: $3.4M (up 27.3%)

NCA Accreditation• For the past two years, Missouri S&T has engaged in a process of self-

study to prepare for re-accreditation. The university received re-accreditation for 10 years after its last review in 1998.

• A copy of the university’s report, developed for The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, is available for review online at accreditation.mst.edu.

• Missouri S&T will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit February 23-25, 2009, by a team of reviewers and consultants representing the commission.

APRIL 9, 2009The Undergraduate Research Conference provides opportunities for students to showcase their research efforts to the campus community and to the public. The

research conference will include oral and poster sessions in the following categories :

The registration deadline is March 16, 2009. Students must submit their on-line registration form and supporting materials, (including abstracts and research papers), no later than 11:59 PM on March 16, 2009. Materials will not be accepted after this

Learning Enhancement Across Disciplines (LEAD)

Fall 2008:

• The LEAD Program had a near record number of faculty (50) running a RECORD NUMBER of learning centers (34) for their courses.
