Bimiitech team members senior Mechanical Engineering major Jarrod Coletta and Eric Shilyuk ’19 were one of six student businesses to be identified as Best Exhibitors at the Grinspoon Entrepreneurship Initiative Annual Banquet in Holyoke, MA in April. They were selected from a pool of 65 companies during a trade show type portion of the evening which featured the 2019 Grinspoon Entrepreneurial Spirit Award winners.

BlinkTek team members: sophomore Entrepreneurship major Grace Buttrick, senior Civil Engineering major William Hroch, junior Civil Engineering major Nicholas Pantorno, junior computer engineering major Autumn Kelly, and junior Civil Engineering major Cole Peterson, were awarded the $500 Innovation Jam award at the Draper Competition for Col-legiate Women Entrepreneurs held at Smith College on April 5. The team has developed a device called Heat Shield that would be attached to a fire helmet to detect a firefighter’s health vitals. Such monitoring can help prevent injuries that occur in firefighters from exhaustion or overheating.

Also in April, this same team was one of six student businesses to be identified as Best Exhibitors at the Grinspoon Entrepre-neurship Initiative Annual Banquet in Holyoke, MA.

Janet Bowdan, professor of English, recently had her poem “Northampton, February” get an Honorable Mention in the Slate Roof Press Broadside Contest.

Josie Brown, professor of English, received the African Amer-ican Female Professor Award in a celebration in September. The goal of the African American Female Professor Award Associa-tion (AAFPAA) is to recognize African American female faculty who are full-time, part-time, or adjunct. “It is our intent that this recognition will help institutions recruit and retain African American female professors, as well as inspire African American female educators to continue their work in the classroom and pursue post-secondary assignments.”

Grace Buttrick, sophomore Entrepreneurship major, won 3rd place in the Sigma Nu Tau (Entrepreneurship Honor Society) 4th Annual Video Pitch Competition. The focus on the pitch is on how has participating in a business plan competition bene-fited your entrepreneurial learning processes.

Meri Clark, professor of history and coordinator of the Global Scholars program for the College of Arts and Sciences, was the recipient of the 2019 Teaching Excellence Award. Winners are nominated by students, faculty, and administra-tors for outstanding contributions as educators and advisors.

Cameron Coe, junior sport management major, was selected as a 2019-20 Stadium Managers Association (SMA) Foundation scholarship recipient. This prestigious scholarship program annually awards a maximum of three scholarships nationwide to undergraduate and/or graduate students pursuing degrees in sport management/administration. Coe serves as president of the Sport Management Association and vice president of the Marketing Association. This award includes a $3,500 tuition scholarship and ex-officio (non-voting) membership on the Foundation Board of Directors. Also as a scholarship recipient, Coe has the opportunity to attend the annual SMA Conference, which will be held in February 2020, in Phoenix.

Senior biomedical engineering students Emily Fernschild and Brennen Zolnoski took first place honors in the Senior De-sign Competition at the 45th annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference in March, held at Rutgers University. Their project titled “Bioreactor for Mechanical Stimulation of 3D Scaffolds for Tendon Tissue Engineering” earned the team $150 and a 3D printer.

Daniel Kennedy, associate professor of pharmacology, had his paper, cowritten with D. Calinski, “P & T and Me” noted as the 2nd most read paper in the American Journal of Pharmaceuti-cal Education for 2018.

Jennifer Levi, professor of law, was recognized by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots this June. The Attorney General’s office selected a handful of LGBTQ lawyers in Massa-chusetts that it believes is at the pioneering forefront of LGBTQ activism and advancement. She also received the Kevin Larkin Community Service Award in May from the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association. And Professor Levi was inducted into Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s Circle of Excellence in November.

The design and writing staff of Marketing and Communica-tions, in collaboration with Spark451, won a Bronze award for the Western New England Magazine from the Advertising Club of Western Massachusetts in May.

Marissa Ostroff, clinical assistant professor of ambulatory care, received the 2019 Faculty Preceptor of the Year, award-ed by the Office of Experiential Education at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She also received the 2019 Excellence in Scholarship Award for the Department of Pharmacy Practice, awarded by the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Cy Ryding ’18/G’19 won third place in the 2019 Student Poster Contest at the Transportation Infrastructure Durability Center (TIDC) Annual Conference, in June. The title of his poster and research topic was “Effect of Indentation Patterns in Prestressed Concrete Prisms Using High Performance Computing.” Sudha Setty, dean of the School of Law, is an honoree of the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s Top Women in the Law for 2019. The Top Women in Law list celebrates outstanding achieve-ments made by exceptional women lawyers.

Samantha (Ellingson) Sullivan, clinical assistant professor of internal medicine, was awarded the Preceptor of the Year Award for the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Mercy Medical Center in June.

Erin Buzuvis, professor of law, received a $2,500 fellowship from the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation for travel to Australia in May 2019. The purpose of the fellowship was to examine Australian antidiscrimination law and its influence on sport organizations’ policies for inclusion and participation of transgender athletes.

Vedang Chauhan, assistant professor of mechanical engi-neering, received a $15,000 MA Acorn Award through the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center (MTTC), January 2019-April 2019, for “Design & Control System Optimization Testing of an Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) System for Small Engine Applications.”

Meri Clark, professor of history, received a $5,850 fellowship from the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation for travel to Finland to visit museums and archival sites to enhance her teaching of comparative history.

Izabela Collier, clinical associate professor of ambulatory care, was awarded the following two Alumni Association grants, one for $1,250 in Fall 2018 for the Summer Camp program and an-other for $810.50 in Spring 2019. She also received Walgreens Pipeline Initiative Development Grant of $2,000 for 2018-2019 and the Beverage Foundation Grant in Spring 2019 for $1000 for the Summer Camp program.

Robert Gettens, associate professor of biomedical engineer-ing, received $5,000, August 2018-September 2019, from Medtronic for “Duckbill Closure Response Time.”

Katelyn Harrison, clinical associate professor of ambulatory care, Kam Capoccia, clinical professor of community care, and Gladys Ekong, assistant professor of pharmacy adminis-tration, were awarded a $2,000 seed grant through the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for a project titled, “Effect of Pharmacist-led Interventions on Diabetes Distress among People with Type 2 Diabetes in a Community Care Setting.”

Thomas Hull, associate professor of mathematics, received a 3-year, $220,000 grant from the National Science Founda-tion. The grant is titled “RUI: Configuration Spaces of Rigid Origami.” It’s a standard research grant through the NSF’s Division of Mathematical Sciences and includes funding for undergraduate students to do original research with Dr. Hull.

Devina Jaiswal, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, received $2,000 from the American Society for Quality, April 2019-April 2020, for “Mechanical Stimulation Bioreactor for Tendon Tissue Engineering.”

Daniel Kennedy, associate professor of pharmacology, had an R21 submission to the National Cancer Institute titled

“Exploring the Role of Thiol Isomerases in Cancer Associated Thrombosis” funded for $377,201.

Melissa Knott, associate professor of management, received a fellowship of $4,793 from the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation for travel to New Zealand and Australia to enhance her global perspective as it relates to her teaching and pedagogy by allowing her to attend the international conference of the Management and Organizational Behavior Teaching Society (MOBTS).

Faraji, received $85,000 from the University Transportation Center, Federal Department of Transportation, January 2019-January 2020 for “Condition Assessment of Corroded Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders.”

Seyed Niknam, assistant professor of industrial engineering and engineering management, received $1,000 in March as a KEEN Book Club Grant.

Amer Qouneh, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received a research grant of $50,000 per year, for a total of $200,000 (2019-2023), for “Enhancing Mobile VR/AR User Experience: An Integrated Architecture-System Approach” from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The project is a collaboration effort with researchers at the University of Florida and University of Houston. Total amount of the grant is expected to reach $1.1 million.

Kourosh Rahnamai, professor of electrical and computer engineering, received a $57,162 KEEN Grant for “EML @ Western New England University,” Michael Rust (PI), from The Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Family Foundation (KFF) via the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) June 2018-July 2019. He also received $2,000 in stipends for EML Module Development as the EE-422 course content was modified during the academic year.

Christian Salmon, assistant professor of industrial engineer-ing and engineering management, received $3,000 in May as a WNE Faculty Grant for “Development of Standards and Recommended Practices for Online Education.”

Mary Schoonmaker, assistant professor of marketing, secured a PeoplesBank grant of $50,000 that will fund five years of Western Mass Innovation Jam startup weekends and

“seedships” (small grants) for student startups.

Moochul Shin, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, (Institutional Lead) received $312,500, September 2018-August 2023, from The U.S. Department of Transporta-tion, University Transportation Center-Region 1 for “Transpor-tation Infrastructure Durability Center: Extending the Life of Our Transportation Assets.” He also received $41,500, (Co-PI) January 2019-December 2019, the University of Maine from The U.S. Department of Transportation, University Transporta-tion Center-Region 1 for “Condition Assessment of Corroded Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders.”

Jingzhou Zhao, assistant professor of mechanical engineer-ing received $15,000, January 2019-March 2019, from the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center for “Production of Silica-coated Metal Nanoparticles Using Electro Spraying.”

Courtney Doyle-Campbell, clinical associate professor of ambulatory care, became coordinator of the American Pharma-cists Association Medical Home/ACO Special Interest Group (SIG) in March.

Janet Bowdan, professor of English, read her poems at the Garlic & Arts Festival in Orange, MA, in September. With Western New England MFA students and graduates Megan Granger, Zubia Abbasi, and Erin Ford Martell, she also led an MFA Showcase reading at the Mason Square Branch of the Springfield Public Library in June.

Debra Latour, assistant professor of practice in occupational therapy, has teamed up with Worcester Polytechnic Institute professor Dr. Ted Clancy and local prosthetics company Lib-erating Technologies, Inc. to develop wireless sensors that will improve the performance of prosthetics for people with upper limb amputations.
