(Peter Devine) Senate Plans Referendum On Curriculum Revision In their meeting "the Senate moved to have a refer- endum on the curriculum report as passed by the faculty. The faculty rejectedtheSenate's request Friday to open their meet- ing on the curriculum. Senators felt that student "approval or dis- approval of the curriculum, point by point, in the form of dorm can- vassing" would be necessary to accurately gauge student opinion and assert the student's right to vote. President of the Senate David W. Steuber noted that the faculty rejection was. "somewhat to be expected?' in that initially last year the Senate failed to use the ground- work implicit in student repre- sentation on the committee itself to assert student opinion. The faculty did invite the student mem- bers of the Curriculum Revision Committee, former Senate Presi- dent Leonard P. Mozzi'69 and Jef- frey C. Green '70, to make a state- ment before leaving the meeting. Mozzi and Green, however, de- . clined, stating that what they wanted was interaction between faculty and students working in unison, rather than a single lec- ture which would amount to nothing more than mere tokenism. John P. Osier '70 pointed out that the referendum should be con- ducted on a more fundamental - level. According to Osier, the referendum would be much more valid if the Senate would pick out the specific, obvious problems and present them to the student body rather than all 26 points. Many senators expressed the belief that the curriculum itself was inconsis- tent with the philosophy the com- mittee set in the introduction of its report. Osier stated that the' points are "not consistent with any philosophy, including the one they (the committee) wrote up themselves." The Senate passed a. motion to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the curriculum report bv Jeff Bahrenburg Sunday night and to decide whether the educa- tional philosophy put forth in the introduction is consistent with the report's actual substance. The referendum will be held after the committee's report which is to be given next week. President Lockwood and the faculty members of the ex- Curriculum Committee will be invited to meet with the Senate at its next meeting, 8 p.m., Sunday, to discuss the new curriculum. At this meeting the Senate will also elect three student members to the Committee on Academic Stand- ing and Discipline. The Faculty of the College will meet this afternoon at 4 p.m. to complete their deliberations on the final report of the Curriculum Re- Vision. Committee. During their day long meeting on 1 ' and four hour meeting on .„ ..rday, the Faculty gave provisional ap- proval to all the recommendations contained in the report with the exception of those pertaining to the academic calender. That topic will come under consideration this afternoon. At the opening of their delibera- tions on Friday, the Faculty re- jected a Senate motion calling for the admission of students into the meeting. The faculty also refused to allow the student members of the Curriculum Revision Commit- tee, former Senate President Leonard P. Mozzi '69 and Jeffrey C. Green '70, and Stephen Lundeen '69 to sit in on the deliberations. Instead, the faculty invited them to make a statement before leaving the meeting. However, Mozzi and Green declined, stating that the gesture was mere tokenism. Faculty members will have an opportunity this afternoon to pre- sent further amendments to the proposed curriculum before hold- ing a final vote on the recom- mendations. Should the Faculty ap- prove the curriculum, the Trustees of the College will vote on the final draft during their meeting of April Most of the recommendations of the Curriculum Revision Commit- tee were accepted intact or with slight changes in their wording by the Faculty. The most significant change to the original report made during the faculty meeting was amending the Committee's recom- mendation on physical education. The Faculty voted to grant a maxi- mum: of .one course credit for a year of physical education, and re- jected the Committee's suggestion that the notation' satisfactory.com- pletion' or 'voluntary incomplete' be placed on student transcripts. While noting that the changes made by the faculty are not final until approved by the Trustees, Professor of Physical Education Karl Kurth stated that the athletic department feels it "can reach more boys if there is a require- ment." However, he stated that he was satisfied with the faculty ac- tion because "the College is off on a new tangent, and we're trying to be part of it." Kurth added that "Some of the boys who really need physical education may regret one day that they have no ability in squash, tennis, golf or swimming." The faculty also voted to change the recommendation that allowed a student to drop a course any time during the first third of a semester without any penalty. The faculty i" voted to shorten the time to three ': weeks. On Saturday, the faculty decided to postpone consideration of the academic calendar because over 800 students had signed a petition in opposition to the recommenda- tion of the Curriculum Committee. The major ciriticism of students against the proposed calendar was that it will result in examinations that follow the Christmas vacation. Under the present calendar, the semester comes to an end before the vacation. According to a statement by Lindsay some members of the committee expressed the opinion . "that departmental majors, which are structured with graduate school requirements in mind, in- fluenced the student's.attitude to- ward education in an adverse way." "There was general recognition of the fact that a Trinity education professional school if he so desired," the statement continued. Lindsay stated that as a member of the Curriculum Revision Com- mittee he had attempted to construct a curriculum which would include four characteristics. These include "a maximum oppor- tunity to explore the breadth and width of his intellectual interests" for the studsnt, an education de- signed "to develop in the student an enthusiasm for learning," and "the growth of each individual as a person with a set of unique qual- ities." Lindsay expressed his be- lief that the new curriculum, which he described as having "a minimum ..of constraints." could achieve these aim's. According to Lindsay's state- ment "there was universal recog- nition that the. educated man or woman should be brought.intocon- Recently college educators and students alike have increasingly expressed dislike for the present grading system. The undergraduate newspaper at Columbia reported last week in an article entitled "Degrading Educa- tibn" that students in a course in urban sociology have refused to accept grades claiming that "the present grading system corrupts the educational process." At Har- vard the student paper reveafed that the staff of Social Science 125 is planning public hearings on the "removal of the course's grading requirement and the general role of grades at Harvard." ...'."> V"; At Trinity much the Same feeling wag expressed in the Minority Re- port on Abolition of Grades pub- lished in the February issue of.the TRIPOD. The Mothers were in Morning-side Heights the other night. Pre-ceded by a pseudo-cool but too-Columbian - for - my - country -bumpkin - taste group called Meat(pretty risque, n'est-cepas?), theyshuffled on stage for an hour-longassault on one's patience.

Now, Frank Zappa is a genius.He plays many things, and thereare a lot of people who swearhe's the best guitarist anywhere.He zaps around the neck with theweirdest jazz chords you'd everwanna hear, and his leads arevery fast and blend beautifullywith the other instruments. I've.been saying all along that 'We'reOnly In It For The Money' wasthe best album of last year, soI can't be accused of outrighthating this eleven man bofflesomedelicatessen.

But it was a drag, Frank cameout, gave everyone the finger,which made all the up-tight

utionaries giggle proudly, and told•them to make the "shortest, high-

Homecoming," the Hartford StageCompany once again proves thatthere is quality professional dramain this city. All the elements oftheatre are handled with such com-petence as to make Harold Pinter'swork into a most absorbing presen-tation.

"The Homecoming" is, of itself,a most intriguing play. It dealswith the relationships between themembers of an all-male householdwho live in a rundown dwelling ina blighted area of London. Thereis Max, the "head" of the house -bitter and often belligerent. Thereare his two unmarried sons, Lenny,an effeminate pimp, and Joey, adull aspiring boxer. Residing withthem is Sam, Max's younger, men-tally impotent brother. Into thisstrange, tense atmosphere comesMax's oldest son, Teddy who hasbeen teaching philosophy inAmerica for six years. He bringswith 'ilm his wife Ruth', who hasnever met her husband's family.

A prime example of the"theatreof the absurd," "Homecoming" iscomic in the most macabre senseof the word. Questions are asked/but never answered. Characters donot converse - they merely waitfor a chance to speak. The subjectsof the various discourses are oftentrivial. The "Dialogue", usuallybanal - and often punctuated by

the pauses which Pinter employs sooften in his works. Indeed, theactors spend much time in silence,ignoring, or pretending to ignoreone another. The plot becomesmore outlandish and shocking asthe play proceeds - the climax ispositively outrageous. Lenny andJoey make passes at Ruth, even-tually making love to her in thepresence of Teddy, who, in thePinter tradition, remains obliviousto it all.

Director Melvin Bernhardtguides his actors with a sure hand.Wisely, he has the American castplay its lines in a subdued Englishaccent, which is convincing in itsunobtrusiveness.

Jeremiah Sullivan (Lenny)stands out among the odd assort-ment of characters. Interesting forpseudo-sophistication, he is a chiefpurveyor of absurdity, discussingnoises in the night and inquiringabout the moment of his concep-tion. Sullivan's swaggering manneradds most of the humor, and muchof the horror, to the play.

As Max, Alan Gifford employschanging, convincing facial ex-pressions to portray a disil-lusioned, yet aggressive old man.At one moment he reflects fondlyupon some person or event, thenext, he is angry and sarcastic.At the end of the play. Max grovelsbefore Ruth, pathetically pleadingthat he's not too old for her favors.

Charlotte Moore (Ruth) has whatis certainly the most mysteriouspart in the play. Treated almost asmuch an object as a person, hercharacter is written in a wayreminiscent of the MatchsellGr inPinter's "A Slight Ache." Ruth hasfew lines, but an overwhelmingeffect on the action of the play.Miss Moore's Ruth becomes anenigma-monosyllabic, wooden-baffling and frustrating.

College BandDemonstratesTalent, Skill

The College's Symphonic BandSunday night put on a sparklingperformance of French and Amer-ican music. Under the baton ofBaird Hastings, the group dem-onstrated a remarkable and ma-ture grasp of the 19th centuryFrench style. .

Berlioz' "Ballet Parisen," a sel-ection from four of the Frenchcomposer's operettas, was a fit-ting1 opener for the program. Hast-ings' conducting was lively andprecise and reflected a keen ap-preciation of Offenbach.

Robert Francks1 performanceof the Berlioz "Serenade of Meph-istofeles" conplemented the sym-phonic program excellently. Par-ticularly impressive was this mus-ician's French diction; it was asnear to perfect as anything thathas been heard in Goodwin The-atre.

The band, though small in size,exhibited tremendous versatilityin dealing with several difficultarrangements, particularly inAmerican composer Charles Ives'"Variations on America." The bestplaying for the evening must beaccredited to the trombone sec-tion. Trumpeter Ed Wells, understudent conductor Norman Aprill,also did an outstanding job in thesymphonic rendition of "Man ofLa Mancha."

What weaknesses the band hasare directly attributable to its sizeand the heavy schedule of eventsit carries. The same instrumen-talists also perform in the Collegeorchestra and the football march-ing band. It is ironic that theirgreatest strengths are also broughtout by this situation.' The smallgroup is able to reshuffle itselffor all types of performances.Lack of full instrumentation islittle hindrance in light of thegroup's innate talent and devotionto the cause of instrumental mu-sic at the College.

Visiting artist Emil Gilels' bril-liant performance on the piano wascertainly the highlight of the Hart-ford Symphony concert last Wed-nesday evening at the Bushnell.Born in Odessa, Russia in 1913,Gilels began his musical studiesat the age of five and has been aEuropeain musical sensation eversince he walked away with firstprize at the Ysaye Competition inBrussels at the age of twenty-two.Since 1955 Gilels has toured theUnited States about every twoyears, and his performance ofBrahms' Concerto No. 2 in B-Flatwas deserving ot the repeated ac-claim he has constantly receivedboth here and in Europe,

It was evident that Gilels' per-sonality complimented his techni-cal command of the piano andsparked his playing. InterpretingBrahms' lyrical interplay betweenvigorous and quiet themes excel-lently, Gilels displayed the sharptiming and clear tone that gavehis performance the edge which theHartford Symphony chronicallylacks.

Haydn's "Symphony No. 46 in• B Major" and Bartok's "ConcertoFor Orchestra" preceded theBrahms concerto with Gilels.Haydn's symphony, with a smallorchestration of two oboes, twohorns, and strings, was written in1772, the same year as the "Fare-well Symphony." It is a relativelyminor work, but is fast moving andvery pleasant and made a goodopener. The Bartok concerto brokethe apparent continuity between theHaydn piece and the Brahm's, and

Czech GroupPerformsAt College

College Sunday to play the worksof three Czech composers, AntoninDvorak, Leos Janacek, and BedrichSmetana.

The members of the group, JiriNovak and Lubomir Kostecky, vio-linists, Milan Skampa, violist, andAntonin Kohout, cellist, perhapslack some of .the cool technicalprecision and finish of the Jul-liard Quartet, however, this ismade up for by a wonderful warmth,mellowness of tone, and un-questionable musicianship. It isalso notable that the quartet turnedoffstage for the most part andplayed even the difficult Janacekfrom memory.

Their warm and singing tonecharacterized the performance ofthe unpretentious Dvorak "Ter-zette for Two Violins and Viola,"a work that occasionally soundsa little unbalanced for lack ofa -bass line that a cello wouldprovide. More interesting1 was theJanacek "Second Quartet 'IntimatePages'" composed in 1927, towardthe end of the composer's life. Themusic is programmatic, describ-ing Janacek's love affair with ayounger woman. It is extremely

• difficult, both to play, and to listento, due to its complex rhythms anddisjointed episodical style. Itdoes not keep the same rhythm formore than a few measures at atime. The Smetana Quartet's per-formance was so intense, and gen-erated such excitement, that it leftthe listerner a little limp after-wards.

The concert closed with thevery lyrical and romantic "QuartetNo. 1 in E Minor" by Smetana,This selection, entitled "From Mylife" by the composer, is alsoprogrammatic, recalling various .events from his youth. It is muchless difficult for both audienceand musicians,

Making Amends

The final report of the Curriculum Revision Committee has emergedrelatively unscathed from two days of faculty deliberations; and barringunforeseen mutilations during their closing sessions, the undergraduatecommunity now has a fairly clear idea of the academic structure underwhich it will operate next year.

The new curriculum is not--as the Committee conceded in theiroriginal report-revolutionary; however, it does have enough sparkle tobe considered moderately avant-garde. It compares quite favorably withthe curricula, offered at other New England colleges. And consideringwhat presently exists at the College, the new curriculum will provide a'dramatic change.

For those who hoped for radical educational innovations, the workof the Committee is somewhat disappointing. The departmentalstructure is still a basic foundation of academic endeavor; students arestill bound to fulfill 36 credit courses, the independent study programis limited to one semester, and the traditional concept of grading willpersist at the College.

Nevertheless, the implications of the new curriculum tend todiminish the threat of a restricted academic experience. We believe thatthe most notable aspect of the curriculum is its flexibility. In contrastto the present structure which places direct limitations upon theinitiative of students, the new curriculum has structures that appear tobe adaptable enough to accommodate the imaginative individual. Ofcourse, the success of the curriculum will depend upon the ability ofthe students, faculty and administration to transform the implication ofchange into a definite reality.

Communications GapThe decision of the faculty to bar students from the deliberations on

the proposed curriculum was both inconsiderate and careless. Theirrude dismissal of the student members of the Curriculum RevisionCommittee was without any possible justification.: The arbitrary action of the faculty should not deter students from. attempting to involve themselves in the decision making process of theCollege. This is all the more important when the issue at stake is theacademic policy of the institution. .Unless the undergraduatecommunity is satisfied to have the faculty spoon-feed them a newcurriculum, it is vital that the students initiate an examination of thecurriculum. The Senate is. obliged to present a thorough critique of thecurriculum to the student body. Ultimately, the Senate should submit alist of amendments and recommendations to the faculty andadministration for consideration.

New Curriculum Offers ComparativeFreedom, Breadth of Opportunity

Perhaps because Trinity Insistson a pessimistic view of itself,•the truly innovative qualities ofthe new curriculum escaped notice.

But now even the curriculum atOregon's Reed College, whichalong with Antioeh embodied edu-cational Utopia for many at Trin-ity, suddenly appears restricting.Though Reed is rich in interdis-ciplinary offerings, examination ofits latest catalog reveals a two-year physical education require-ment, and the absence of such op-portunities as student teaching andthe open semester.

All the Little Three Collegeswork on some variation of distri-bution. At Amherst, all studentsmust complete a seven-course dis-tribution requirement in depart-ments outside their major. Threeinterdisciplinary introductorycourses, entitled "Problems ofInquiry," are required during thefirst two years. The school alsodemands participation in a two-year physical education program,ani the fulfillment of a languageproficiency requirement.

Students at Williams must taketwo courses in each of three divi-sions — Language and the Arts,Social Studies, Science and Math-ematics. Both language and physi-cal education requirements mustalso be fulfilled.

Independent study is available atAmherst and Williams, but thecatalog's emphasize that the pro-

gram is available only to those ofsuperior ability.

Wesleyan's "guideline"programis a more specific version ofTrinity's distribution guidelines.Diversity through courses in sevenareas — English language, an-cient and modern language, phil-

courses, plus a year of physicaleducation. Each student must com-plete one term of expository -writ-ing, and a full-year course in theNatural Sciences, Social Studies,and the Humanities. Required alsoare two additional full-yearcourses outside the individual's

film DANTE, which received itssecond showing last Wednesday inthe Austin Arts Center,, proved agenerally successful first ventureinto filmmaking- by the pair.

Any anslysis of the film musttake into account the fact that itscreaters are amateurs, with noprevious experience of this nature.Most of its imperfections are tech-nical ones, a direct result of theirunfamiliarity with the medium.They mar an otherwise very fineartistic effort.

The film concerns the life ofDante Aleghieri, and the times inwhich he lived. Campo's text showsvery clearly the relation betweenthe two, and their effect on thepoet's magnum opus, the DIVINECOMEDY. The crispness andsim- •plicity of the text, combined withDando's polished narration, engagethe viewer, without distractinghimovermuch with the happenings onthe screen.

DANTE's most serious flaw isits ineffectual ending, which at-tempts to evoke the feeling of thepoet's beatific vision but falls farshort emotionally. This is not tooverly discredit the film's makers,for the task is a difficult one.

Campuses Disrupted 15 Students ConfrontWilliams Faculty

Student disruption during thepast week at Duke, City College ofNew York, and U. of Wisconsinbrought police and national guards-men to quell the demonstrators.The demonstrations were con-ducted to support demands madeby Negro students to have strongercontrol of their education.

Black students at U. of Wiscon-sin in revolt all week demonstratedfor the immediate establishment ofa Black Studies Program, thatwould not only have an autonomousstatus, but would be entirely con~.trolled by Black students andfaculty. Such a program would thengive to the student the right tohire and to fire all administratorsand professors involved in any waywith Black education. Further de-mands for more Black counselorsand Black athletic scholarships

were sought through the campusdisruptions.

The first rebellion at a whiteSouthern university began at Dukethis past week. The Negroes' de-mands, supported by many whitestudents, included: a Black Educa-tion Program in which there wouldbe no grading; a special dormi-tory for Negroes; a Black Stu-dent Onion building; and moreNegro students and professors.

Puerto Ricans joined Negro stu-dents at CCNY last week toassert through demonstration theirdissatisfaction with racist condi-tions on the City College campus.Among the most impressive of thestudents' demands were that stu-dents ought to have a voice in theSEEK program, a program thatrecruits and aids students frompoverty areas.

At a recent faculty meeting atWilliams, fifteen students con-fronted the faculty by attempting toattend the meeting without priorpermission necessary for studentattendance. The students, lookingfor an arrangement by whichstudents could participate more di-rectly in currieular and academicdecisions, were asked to leave be-fore the meeting was calledto order.

Arriving before the meeting be-gan, the students understood thatimportant currieular reformswere to be discussed at the meet-ing and the students, as membersof the Williams community, soughtto observe the proceedings of themeetings. As reported in the Wil-liams Record, students did notcome to the meeting to disrupt theproceedings, but rather to 'in-crease the collective awareness ofthe community and to stimulatemore meaningful dialogue.'

A motion was then passed bythefaculty requesting the students toleave before the meeting was calledto order, but the students wereallowed to read a prepared state-ment asserting their reasons fortheir coming to the meeting. Theactions of the 15 students were notconsidered to be illegal becausethe students attempted to exercisea more' powerful role in decidingacademic changes and reforms.

Groups; Urges Involvement I Columbia Lifts SentencesIn a TRIPOD interview Sunday,

Senate President David Steuber'70stated that he would encourage stu-dent participation in eight newlyestablished committees. In hisplatform, Steuber had noted thatseveral areas needed "immediateattention."

The committees will concernthemselves with such areas ascommunity relations, social re-lations, judiciary procedures,Senate revision, academic revi-sion, finance, long range plan-ning, and Junior adviser selection.He announced his choice of AndrewLipps '71 to head the JudiciaryCommittee. Steuber describedLipps as "a good worker." Lippswas active in the judiciary com-mittee of last year's Senate.

Steuber stated that formsrequesting student volunteers wereto be sent out Monday. During hisPresidential campaign, he had saidhe would be satisfied with a one-tenth return, but added that hehoped for more. The committeesshould, according to Steuber, bemade up of approximately eightstudents.

Steuber said he feels that thesecommittees are necessary becausethere is a "need for organizationin the Senate." He pointed out thatlast year's Senators did most of thework themselves as a body,and "really didn't do a thing." Thecommittees, as he describes them,can be used to "iron out prob-lems and save time."

Steuber commented that thesecommittees will replace theexisting committees, and addedthat AD HOC committees wouldbe formed if necessary.

When asked whether he wouldseek the Senate's approval of hiscommittees, he answered that thiswas not necessary, because it washis "Presidential prerogative" toestablish such committees.

Lindsay expressed disagree-ment with a suggestion by amember of the sub-committee that"grades should be abolished andwritten evaluations provided forall external reference needs,"Lindsay stated that he felt "gradeshave some value. He noted that thecurriculum revision report pro-vides for the establishment of acommittee to discuss any possiblechanges in the grading system.Lindsay expressed the hope thatthe committee would issue "areport which will deal with someof the objections" which have beenraised to the elimination of grades.

The Committee on Disciplinary 'Affairs at Columbia has terminated jall disciplinary sentences and pun-ishments resulting from lastspring's demonstrations. Thecommittee further declared that alldisciplinary action notations onstudent records would be removedfrom accused students and suchnotations of discipline would beconsidered inadmissible evidencein any future disciplinary proceed-ings.'

The committee, granted by theUniversity, full and final authorityon all disciplinary matters, an-nounced all students who were sus-pended may re-apply for adrrii ssionunder normal admission proce-dures. Until January, 9 monthsafter the spring demonstrations,only 250, of the 500 students facingdisciplinary action had been con-victed with the other 250 cases stillpending before the established dis-ciplinary tribunals.

Though the Committee's find-ings and final report recommendeda termination of all University dis-ciplinary punishments and pro-ceedings,at least 500 students andnon-students face criminalcharges in criminal court for theirdemonstration participation. Manystudents remain dissatisfied withthe committee decision since itfalls short of endorsing the demon-stration last spring.

The demonstration. has had amarked effect on applicants to

Spirit is blending jazz with rock.Without much brass but a hearty,spooky piano augmented,by heavybass, the,styles cross again andagain, finally resolving in dreamyinstrumental passages, Spirit hasreal musicians, knows howto colorand blend, and mixes very well.

The Turtles put on a dumbstage act, but their singing andplaying -were, adequate, Vocals arevery strong, but instruments lackany originality whatsoever. OneTurtle said to Ed Cassldy, Spiritdrummer; "Hey, we'd really liketo get together with you, and reallylearn how to play. We do shit.You guys' are really into some-thing; we could really learn fromeach other."

Canned Heat is nice, aloof, andenthusiastic. They play well, es-pecially when melody takes off,but it gets tiring to hear theBoogie for over a half-hour. Havepity, man! After, three hours ofamplified notes, ya get tired ofa bass solo past five minutes,no matter how loud it is. ,

The Stage Company con-tinuously demonstrates cornpe- .teriee in this area of the theatre.

Non-communication, belliger-ence, blight- these are the ele-ments with which "The Home-coming" is concerned. These arethei elements which the HartfordStage Company conveys so wellin its production of the play.

:.: Ths Hartford Symphony's play-ing, while failing to match the ex-cellence of Gilels', was better thanaverage. It was smooth and hit alltfie notes, and conductor ArthurMnograd handled the Bartokselection well, considering its dif-ficulty. Along with Gilels, principlevioloncellist Jonathan Miller sur-passed the rest of the: orchestrawith an especially fine per-formance.

Perhaps symphony orchestras,along with cheese and wine, growbetter with age. The winter con-cert season is moving into itslatter portion. If the coming visit-ing artists are as good as thismonth's; was, the final per-formances cpuid be good. Ticketsare in order if you can't make itto New York or Philadelphia.

Another week has gone by forthe Trinity basketballers, and intypical Trinity fashion, two moregames were dropped to up the countto five in a row and seven outof the last eieht games olaved lost.This week's delighted opponents in-cluded Wesleyan on Wednesday andKings Point Saturday night.

Wednesday's Middletowncontestsaw Wesleyan reverse an earlierone-point defeat at the hands ofthe Bants with a 99-84 win. Trinitytook a brief lead in the game'soutset, but the Cardinals cameroaring back to hold a 43-32 half-time edge.

Jack Sitarz and Joe Summa ofthe host team combined for 63points in the contest and theirpower kept Wesleyan on topthroughout the second half. Theclosest Trin came was 64-61, buta brief Cardinal rally settled mat-ters quickly for Wesleyan's fifthwin in 15 contests.

Bantam coach Robie Shults at-tributed the Wesleyan win to theCardinal's especially hot shootingperformance, over 50% from thefloor. "But we're looking forwardto the rubber match with Wesleyanon Feb. 25 here." Joe Pantaloneand Howie Greenblatt continued tobe the only consistent Bantamscorers, tossing in 29 and 27 re -spectively.

Saturday's contest with KingsPoint was strictly no contest, asthe visiting Hilltoppers fell preyto a fine host squad, 83-75. Trln'sPantalone led all scorers in thegame with 30 points, but it wasnot enough to keep Kings Pointfrom wrapping, up its 11th win in16 games.

The Kingsmen rolled in the firsthalf, as they took a commanding52-39 edge at Intermission. Shultsfelt the long trip to New York af-fected the club in this half, andthe Trinity performance bears thisopinion out, as the Bants nearlypulled the game out. With fourminutes remaining, in the game,Trinity closed the gap to 71^65,but a pair of consecutive bucketsby the host squad put an abruptend to any faint hope Trinity hadof a victory. v.v'

Beside Pantalone, the only otherTrinity player to break doublefigures -was Greenblatt with 16.Shults also had nothing but praisefor the performance of Jack God-frey, the team's captain and new-est starter.

Trinity will have to experiencea more balanced scoring attack ifthey expect to improve on their5-11 mark during the season's finalfive games. This week finds theBants entertaining Coast Guardwhile on Saturday, the Hilltopperswill travel crosstown to meet cityrival Hartford, one of the hottestteams in the area. Trin emergedwith a tight one-point win overthe Coasties in the teams' firstencounter at New London, and withthe home court advantage, theBantams should be favorites. ButTrinity seems a difficult team tofavor due to its erratic perfor-mances of late, and the Bants willhave to come up with more scoringpunch besides Pantalone andGreenblatt if they expect to end arather dismal season on a lightnote.

The Frosh Swimming' team wasback at full strength Saturday fora meet with Trinity^ Pawl ing, butthey just weren't strong enough,as they went down to defeat by ascore of 60-34. They still haveyet to win a meet, while losingeight.

A quick glance at last week'svarsity swim results seem to bevery similar to six of. the lastseven verdicts-losses. But thefrustrating part of the wholesimilarity is that the swimmersjust aren't that bad. Rather thediscouraging part is that the teamis doing the best it can with onlynine men in a sport best suitedfor fifteen or more.

Case number one: Last Wednes-day the team traveled to Amherstwhere they were beaten 61-32.Spread dangerously thin, the teamcould manage only 3 first places,one in the last relay when theywere helplessly behind. As it hasbeen in most meets this year,Mike Wright garnered the winsin his two freestyle events, the50 and 100. The free relay teamof Captain Doug Watts, Art Ross,John Notman and, not surprising-ly, Wright won their event, butalas, too late. Sophomore WardGodsall took two second places inthe meet, one in the 200 butter-fly and the other in the 200 yardbackstroke. Chris Knight roundedout the "bright spots" for the daywith a second in the 200 yardbreaststroke.

Case number two never reallygot off the ground. Faced with theembarrassing situation of travel-

ing to Bowdoin College in Mainewith a five man swimming team,Coach Slaughter decided to for-feit the meet. Truly a fine re-flection on Trinity when only fivemen will turn up to represent theschool in a varsity contest.

Coach Slaughter still thinks theteam can win Friday against Unionand next Tuesday against Tufts ifsome of the people who haven'tdecided to swim this year, comedown and give the remaining mem-bers of the team the advantageof swimming in their own events.Besides, the psychological lift ofseeing a full bench cheering himon, rather than a half dozen boredbodies will do wonders for aswimmer. However, the second half was adifferent story. The T-P squadwas fired up when they came backon to the floor, and they soonpared the Bantam lead to 10. TheFrosh soon pulled back together,and in dramatic fashion re-estab-lished their dominance. With fourminutes remaining, both coachesemptied the -benches, sending intheir reserves. Both reservesquads performed credibly, withseveral of the Bantams gettingintothe scorebook.

Trinity's fencers were unable tocome up with a winning combina-tion against either Princeton orArmy Saturday, losing 19-8 and22-7, respectively.

The squad will face more equit-able competition today when Bran-deis will visit for a match at 3 p.m.In the New England tourney lastyear, Brandeis finished just behindsecond place Trin. This meetshould give an indication of theBantams' chances for this year'sNew Englands.

Against Princeton, Joel Green-span notched two victories whileMarshall Garrison, Stu Hamilton,

Paul Meyendorff, Jack Luxemburg,John Gaston, and Marshall Ken-nard each added one apiece.

Foil was particularly disap-pointing against the Tigers, win-ning two of nine, while sabre andepee grabbed three each.

The Army duel was worse forthe Bantams, Hamilton, however,showed potential championshipform as he whipped all three Cadetfoilists. Trin's other two winscame from Greenspan in sabreand Gaston in epee.

Three assists and one goal byPaul Bushueff and Henry "Smiley"Barkhausen's hat trick powered theTrinity hockey team to their sixthvictory of the season, a 7-3 deci-sion over New Haven College Sat-urday night at the Hartford Arena.

The Bantam icemen thus gainedrevenge for a previous 4-0 loss toNew Haven. They go after victorynumber seven tonight, meetingQuinnipiac, a team they alreadybeat 13-3, in an away contest.

Freshman John Kiley got theBantams off to a flying start fol-lowing a pass from Eushueff, as hescored in the opening minutes ofthe first period. New Haven cameback on a goal by "Dirty Dickie"Hildebrand.

Then the Bantams took the leadon two goals by Scott Phillips.Bushueff was credited with assistson both tallies. New Haven cameback to narrow the gap to 3-2 onPaul Kane's goal as the first periodended.

Following a major penalty as-sessed on Frank Stowell, NewHaven scored its final goal of thegame with Trinity one man down.Later, with Trin still a man down,Bushueff drove down the ice,passed to Kiley and received a r e -turn pass to score his goal.

The Bantam defense excelled atthis point. Another penalty on Trin-ity gave New Haven a 6-4 lead inmanpower, but goalie SheldonCrosby, Spike Birmingham, andMcVoy held oli the New Havencharges until Trinity was at fullstrength.

With Trinity back at fullstrength, Barkhausen netted hisfinal goal. Barkhausen's tally with

1:31 left gave Trin an insurmount-able 7-3 lead.

The final period was a completestandoff. Goalies Crosby and NewHaven's Bill 'Conlan made re-peated saves of attempted shots.The Trinity barrage was so greatthat Conlan was injured, returnedto the game, and by the end wasleaning back on the cage forsupport.

The frosh did not lose one game,coming up with twenty-one indi-

vidual victories. Outstanding wereJay Davis, Frank MacGruer, andDick Palmer, numbering two,-three, and four . on the team.

Davis overpowered his opponentwith scores of 15-4, 15-4, and15-10. Even more overpoweringwas MacGruer with wins of 15-4,15-1, and 15-4. Palmer picked uphis three games by margins of15-9, 15-5, and 15-4.
