HISTORY OF FAIRVIEW CEMETERY, MERSEA TOWNSHIP

Fairview Cemetery, located south of Wheatley, Ontario,is bounded by Erie Street to the east, a fence to the south, trees and fields to the west, and by trees and a ravine to the north.

It is believed that the land occupied by the cemetery was used as a burial ground as early as the 1850's or 1860's, but many of the grave markers are gone.

Records in the Land Registry Office in Windsor (Abstract Book for Mersea Township) list a number of transactions involving the sale of property in the East Half of Lot 218. In 1894, Arthur Buchanan sold 100 acres to Henry S. Ivison. Plan Noo 466, dated August 23, 1899, and showing the layout of the cemetery, is titled "Fairview CemeterYo.ooo •• oThe Property of Henry Ivison Esq." The eastern'boundary is indicated as being the "County Line Between Essex and Kent or Lake Street" (now Erie Street) 0 Apparently the burial ground was, known as Lakeview Cemetery at one timeo

Lewis Wigle, Judson Setterington, and W. Albert Baker were elected the first trustees and remained in office until at least 19070

Some of the early purchasers of cemetery plots were David Enoch Malott, George Morse, James White, Phoebe Conover, George Elliott, John R. Ulprott, Robert Fair, Thomas Killey, Benjamin Noble, John Selkirk, Charles Fox, William Noble, and James Youngo

It is known that the old Indian burial grounds are in the northeastern section of the cemeteryo Older residents of the area recall native Indians being buried there along with their hunting weapons and other possessionso

According to the Historical Atlas of Essex and Kent Counties, 1881~, H 0 S. Ivison was a farmer owning 100 acres of Lot 218 ~ and had lived there since his birth in 18430 His father, Joseph, was born in England in 1811 and came to Canada in 18350

When Henry Ivison died, ownership of the cemetery went to William H. Mills, Undertaker v and wife g in 1918, and then to Lawrence Bailey and Reta Elva Bailey, in 19330 The present owner, since 1983, is Larry A. McDonald 0 Glenn Liebrock is presently the caretaker of the cemeteryo

We are very grateful to June Coulter, Rita Lobzun, Harold Hickson p Marion Omstead, Glenn and Elaine Liebrock, Larry McDonald, and Colleen Ouellette, for providing the information about Fairview Cemetery.

Considerable effort has been made to present the inscriptions as depicted on the gravestones, and to avoid errors of any kindo However, due to the deterioration of many of the older stones, difficulties were encountered in deciphering themo

Please note that errors in spelling, dates, etco were sometimes made by the engravers or by the persons supplying the information to the engravers. Unusual or unconventional spellings of given names and surnames may be" found. Also, there can be more than one spelling of a surname on stones in a family plot, or even on the same stoneo

Stones contained within a family plot may not be in the same row as the main stone, and are often found in adjacent rowso

Finallyv as with any endeavour of this nature, the human element must be considered. We apologize for any errors found in this publication, and we will do our utmost to correct them, if brought to our attention.

GRAVESTONE EMBLEMS

Symbols and emblems are often found on cemetery gravestones, and may depict the religious convictions or the livelihood of the deceased, or membership in a fraternal order or other organization. Following are some of the emblems encountered in this cemetery. Since there are several variations of the emblems, they may not be exactly as shown here. These copies of emblems are courtesy of Excelsior Monuments Ltd.,Tecumseh, Ontario.

Another emblem found on some stones is the following hand-drawn facsimile~ which is believed to be of the Orange Lodge: g

A few gravestones also had ornamental metal markers in the ground beside them, similar to these hand-drawings:
