Burke Centre Parkway Intersection Options

Prohibit Left Turns from Burke Centre Parkway• Improved safety and increased southbound and northbound Fairfax

County Parkway green time• Southbound traffic will only stop when pedestrian crossing signal

is activated

Burke Centre Parkway Intersection OptionsNew Option Based on Feedback

Right-In / Right-Out• Eliminates existing traffic signal• Requires relocation of pedestrian crossing across Fairfax County

Parkway • Diverts southbound left turn traffic to Route 123 Interchange• Prohibits U-turn at Burke Centre Parkway

• Operational modifications to Fairfax County Parkway at Ox Road interchange are being coordinated with Fairfax County

• Traffic analysis ongoing• Potential improvements

include:• Exit/Entrance ramp

improvements• Transition from 3 to 2 lanes on

• As part of the environmental analysis conducted during the NEPA analysis, VDOT will conduct a noise impact assessment which will include:

Identifying noise receptors (such as residences, schools, parks, etc.)Conducting noise monitoring in the field Conducting noise modelingIdentifying impacts Designing and assessing mitigationPreparing and presenting noise study results and preliminary noise wall locations (if necessary) at public meetings.

Noise BarriersFeasibility

• Does it work acoustically?• VDOT requires that 50% or more of the impacted receptors

experience 5 dB(A) or more of noise reduction to be feasible;

• Can it be constructed?• Factors related to design and

construction include: safety, barrier height, topography, drainage, utilities, and maintenance of the abatement measure, maintenance access to adjacent properties, and general access to adjacent properties

AND

Example of location where sound barrier would not be feasible due

to spacing of driveways

Virginia Department of Transportation

Noise Barriers• Reasonable

• Cost-effectiveness• Maximum 1,600 sq ft of noise

barrier or less per benefited residence

• Design goal• 7 decibels of noise reduction at 1 impacted receptor

• Viewpoints of the benefited receptors• Democratic vote of the benefited receptors• 50% of the benefited respondents must favor construction• Partial mitigation may occur as a result of the vote
