TOURS

WELCOME TO 2021Identity - Resilience - Legacy - Agents of change - Future gazing - Disruptive narratives

These are the terms that one could apply to describing this season’s program. Seemingly dissimilar in nature, they have a common thread that ties them together, that is the unrelenting need for individuals and communities to express their world, of the internal and of the external.

Whether it is a an audience engagement program such as Behind the Lens or any of our five exhibitions, Switching Codes, Miras, Travelling Sounds, Here: After or Extra/Ordinary, all in their own way touch on one or any of the following national, global and humanitarian issues, contemporary art and philosophical ideologies.

Upholding the power of the artistic voice and that of telling one’s story is very important to FCMG and one which we will always champion.

MIRAS: Celebrating Uyghur CultureUntil 27 February 2021

MIRAS is a vibrant display of Uyghur cultural content that discovers and explores this little known ethnic group. Originating from Central Asia, several hundred Uyghur migrants and refugees now call western Sydney home.

This project is delivered in partnership with the Australian Uyghur Association.

Shireen Taweel: Switching CodesUntil 13 February 2021

Switching Codes is a collection of copper sound sculptures and engraved copper tablets expressing the evolution of language and culture. Through a new body of work, Shireen Taweel questions the act of code-switching in a multilingual society, unpacking the ongoing Arab, French and English cultural practices in Lebanon, and its influence on the shared Lebanese cultural identity in Australia and Lebanon.

EXHIBITIONS Travelling Sounds: Music & Migration in Western SydneyUntil 29 May 2021

From rock ‘n’ roll legends to hip-hop pioneers and today’s up-and-coming musicians, western Sydney’s sound has been shaped by young people with a story to tell. This new exhibition provides a soundtrack to the changing social and cultural landscape of suburban Sydney from the 1960s through to today.

Here: After27 February – 26 June 2021Exhibition Launch Friday 26 February 5pm

Here: After presents radical and fantastical visions for our future. Acting as fortune-tellers, soothsayers, dreamers—artists from Fairfield and beyond come together to manifest alternative realities that are intricately personal and connected to place. Speculating on the here and the after, the exhibition imagines expansive, grounded and saturated tomorrows. Artists: Serwah Attafuah, Kalanjay Dhir, Leila El Rayes & Justine Youssef, Michelle Ly and Jazz Money. Curator: Tian Zhang

Extra/Ordinary11 June – 20 November 2021

Extra/Ordinary blurs the boundaries between contemporary art and heritage, raising questions about the value of museum collections in contemporary society.

Artists Liam Benson, Make or Break, Re-Right Collective, Jennifer Leahy, Dacchi Dang and the Finishing School will create new work responding to FCMG’s historical collection, revealing untold stories and inviting visitors to participate with a critical eye.
