We are asking you to work with us in supporting your child’s learning of these high frequency words throughout the year. Unfortunately, many of these words are awkward, in that they do not follow spelling rules, which we work on in their daily Read, Write Inc. lessons. Of course, any strategy that enables your child to know the correct spelling of the word is fine. We would like you to check your child’s knowledge of these words and continue to work on them with your child throughout the year. At the end of every term, your child will receive an assessment on their knowledge of spelling this bank of words. In addition to this, your child will also receive a weekly spelling pattern to learn.

End of Key Stage Expectations

Dear Parents and Carers,

We would like to explain to you how we are organising spellings homework in Year One this year.

Attached to this letter, you will see that some words that have been organised into different coloured groups. These words are ‘high frequency words’, i.e. words which are used a lot in the English language and which, of course, the children need to know. We are asking you to work with us in supporting your child’s learning of these high frequency words throughout the year.

Unfortunately, many of these words are awkward, in that they do not follow spelling rules, which we work on in their daily Read, Write Inc. lessons. We recommend that you encourage your child to use the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ method of learning them. If you are not sure about this, please ask your child or pop in to see us.

We hope this explanation is clear, but if you need to ask any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to one of the Year One teachers.

Thank you for your support.

Year One Team
