Ninth Season • Bucknell ’032015 CAA Coach of the Year

The 2017 season is Andy Copelan’s ninth at the helm of the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team. He has posted a 76-56 (.576) record with the Stags and owns an 11-year NCAA Division I head coaching record of 94-71 (.570).

Copelan was named the team’s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Including this spring’s preseason rankings, Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan’s nine years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-ranked foe in seven of his campaigns with the Stags.

Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the nationally-prominent Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags have made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to their first-ever CAA Championship Game. Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in 2015. In two seasons with the CAA, the Stags have collected 14 All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox ’18 and 2016 Rookie and co-Player of the Year nods for Colin Burke ’19.

Fairfield student-athletes also continued to gain the national and regional spotlight in 2016. Burke and TJ Neubauer ’16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season. Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. He was the 10th Stag during Copelan’s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks.

Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from 2011-14, including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan’s 2013 club recorded the Stags’ first-ever victory over the nation’s top-ranked team with a triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game.

Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield.

Signs of the Stags’ return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program’s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in 2006. Fairfield has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure.

Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan’s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in 2004. In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the MAAC Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program’s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth. After his stint at Marist, Copelan held an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland from 2006-08, rising to the offensive coordinator position for his last campaign with the Terps. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Copelan’s three seasons, highlighted by a trip to the 2006 Final Four. With Copelan as recruiting coordinator, Inside Lacrosse ranked the Terps’ 2007 incoming class as the second best in the nation, and the 2008 class was tabbed as the third best in the country.

The Matchup: Fairfield vs. DrexelScouting Drexel

After opening their CAA slate with an 8-7 home loss to Towson last Saturday, the Drexel Dragons welcome the Stags to Vidas Field with a record of 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the CAA. The Dragons are 2-3 at home this spring.

Offensively, two-time Second Team All-CAA attackman Cole Shafer leads the team with 22 goals and 25 total points. Rookie Reid Bowering adds 13 goals and nine assist and Robert Frazee - the Dragons’ leading goal scorer last season with 24 markers - has contributed 16 goals and four assists to the Drexel attack. The Dragons rank third in the CAA with 9.45 goals scored per game and have conceded a CAA-worst 11.11 goals per contest.

Jimmy Joe Granito has helmed the cage for all by 64 seconds of the season for Drexel en route to a .515 save percentage (100 goals allowed, 106 saves) and an 11.08 goals-against average. Will Stabbert leads the defense in front of Granito with 12 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.

On the faceoff dot, rookie specialist Jimmeh Koita has taken the majority of the reps, recording a mark of 67-of-177 (.379) with a team-leading 28 ground balls. Adding in the efforts of Nabil Akl (2-of-10) and Ian Foster (7-of-250, the Dragons own a .358 win percentage on the draw this spring.

April 9, 2016: Fairfield 8, Drexel 7Fairfield used a five-goal run in the second half to surge past visiting Drexel, 8-7,

in last spring’s meeting on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Charlie Schnider racked up six points (1g, 5a) for the Stags, and TJ Neubauer netted a hat trick before a crowd of 1,321 and a nationwide audience watching on ESPN3.

Colin Burke added two goals and dished out an assist. Rounding out the Fairfield scoring were Drew Murray with two goals and Charlie Horning with one assist.

In the midfield, Neubauer and Horning led the effort with six ground balls apiece. Three of Neubauer’s grabs came on the draw, where Will Fox went 5-of-12 and Joe DeLasho added a 2-of-6 day.

Tyler Behring helmed the cage and made seven saves to earn the win. He also picked up four ground balls and had a pair of caused turnovers. Joe Guidarelli also caused two turnovers on the defensive end.

All-Time Series vs. Drexel (Drexel leads 3-2)The Stags are 2-0 against Drexel since joining the CAA beginning in the 2015

season. Previously, the Dragons had won the only three meetings in the series that spanned Fairfield’s first three years as an NCAA varsity program from 1993-95.

Fairfield vs. Ranked OpponentsFairfield has defeated at least one ranked opponent (in

the USILA Coaches’ Poll) in seven of Andy Copelan’s nine seasons at the helm of the Stags - including a win at then-No. 1 Denver during the 2013 season. The Stags have four wins over top-10 programs during the Andy Copelan era.

Per the current ledger, the April 22 meeting with No. 15 Towson at Rafferty Stadium is the Stags’ next opportunity to knock off a ranked team.

On the DrawJoe DeLasho has won over 50 percent of his faceoff

attempts in each of the last four games, posting a 40-of-60 (.667) mark with 18 ground balls during that time. The stretch was highlighted by a 29-of-44 (.659) showing on the dot in the back-to-back games against NIT and Villanova.

For the season, DeLasho ranks second in the CAA at 66-of-123 (.537) with a team-high 32 ground balls. Will Fox is the other half of the equation with a 48-of-92 (.522) mark and 23 ground balls.

Road WarriorsDue in part to a March nor’easter altering the schedule,

Fairfield played six of its first seven games on the road this season. Prior to the recent three-game homestand, the Stags were one of just three teams in the nation to have played only one home contest.

After Saturday’s game in Philadelphia, Fairfield will play two of its final three regular season games within the familiar confines of Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.

Immediate ImpactsThree rookies have been key components to the Fairfield

attack in 2017. Dylan Beckwith (10g, 9a), Travis Ford (16g, 1a) and Alex Wagner (5g, 2a) have scored 31 of the Stags’ 79 goals (39.2 percent) and 43 of their 118 total points this season (36.4 percent). Beckwith and Ford are the first rookie duo to each net 10 goals for the Stags since Dave Fleming scored 23 goals and Jake Knostman potted 15 markers in their freshman campaigns of 2014.

Beckwith, Ford and Wagner lead a freshman class that will look to continue a recent trend, as Colin Burke was the third straight Fairfield player to collect Rookie of the Year laurels (in addition to a CAA co-Player of the Year nod) in 2016. Previously, Will Fox was named the 2015 CAA Rookie of the Year and Dave Fleming garnered the 2014 ECAC Rookie of the Year distinction.

Going Coast-to-CoastAfter handing out his first career assist in Saturday’s

game against Hofstra, Andrew Eidenshink became the first Fairfield defenseman to get in the scoring column this spring.

In 2016, Matt Borda scored a goal with the long pole in a win over Colgate while short-stick defensive midfielder Joe Guidarelli ’16 registered a goal and an assist during his final campaign with the Stags.

Schedule StrengthPer the latest NCAA report, Fairfield has played the 12th

most difficult schedule in the nation by opponent winning percentage. The Stags’ 2017 opponents are a combined 51-37 (.580) to date. Five of Fairfield’s 10 prior foes held a USILA national ranking at the time of the meeting with the Stags, and seven of the 10 have cracked the top-20 at some point during the 2017 campaign.

Not Settled in SixtyFairfield’s 11-10 double-overtime loss at in-state foe Yale

on March 11 marked the third time in the last four seasons that the Stags and Bulldogs have played an extra session, including back-to-back overtime games at Yale’s Reese Stadium.

Fairfield’s last double-overtime game prior to last Saturday was a 12-11 win over CAA foe Delaware on April 18, 2015, which Tristan Sperry ’15 ended at the 65:00 mark with his second goal of the day.

At 66:46 of game time, this season’s game at Yale was Fairfield’s longest outing since a triple-overtime win (69:53) at Hofstra on Feb. 28, 2012.

Travis Ford: CAA Rookie of the WeekAfter his career-best four goals at Yale on March 11, Travis

Ford was tabbed as the CAA Rookie of the Week. In addition to netting Fairfield’s first goal of the day in the second quarter against the Bulldogs, he scored twice during the third quarter that saw the Stags shave the margin from 8-2 to 9-6 and also potted the man-up goal that cut the deficit to 9-8 early in the fourth frame. On the season, Ford ranks second on the Stags behind Colin Burke (18g, 7a) with 16 goals and picked up his first career assist in addition to a goal in Saturday’s CAA opener against Hofstra.

Colin Burke: Tewaaraton Award Watch ListColin Burke has been named to the Tewaaraton Award

Watch List. Burke is among 50 collegiate men’s lacrosse players placed on the early season watch list for the honor.

Burke has racked up a team-leading 25 points, scoring a team-high 18 goals to go along with seven assists, thus far in 2017. He entered the year as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Third Team selection this preseason after earning a USILA All-America Honorable Mention, CAA co-Player of the Year and CAA Rookie of the Year laurels last spring. Burke totaled 46 goals and 17 assists in a record-setting rookie campaign with the Stags in 2016.

Stag WatchingSaturday’s game at Drexel is second of four Lax Sports

Network appearances on the slate for the Stags in 2017. The Stags return to the network next Saturday, April 15 for

their CAA meeting at Massachusetts, and LSN will be back at Rafferty Stadium for the regular season finale against Delaware on April 28.

Previously this season, the Stags hosted Rutgers live on LSN on Feb. 25. All of Fairfield’s home games are slated to be broadcast live this spring, including appearances on ESPN3 and the team’s first-ever game on Facebook Live.

Becoming a ‘Regular’ OccurrenceThe Stags have won back-to-back Colonial Athletic

Game 1: #20 Fairfield at Richmond#20 Stags Fall in Season Opener at Richmond

Ford, Burke and Panepinto each score in 2017 debut

RICHMOND, Va. – Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team dropped a 15-3 decision to host Richmond in its 2017 season opener on saturday, Feb. 11. Travis Ford, Colin Burke and Nico Panepinto had the Stags’ trio of goals, while Charlie Horning and Dylan Beckwith each handed out an assist for the visitors.

Fairfield (0-1) came into the contest ranked No. 20 in the USILA Preseason Coaches’ Poll and as high as No. 17 in national preseason prognostications. Richmond (1-0) entered the season unranked but receiving votes from the USILA and was ranked as high as No. 15 on other national ledgers.

A 1-0 lead was Fairfield’s only advantage of the contest as Ford’s first career tally staked the Stags to a lead at 8:26 in the first quarter. The extra-man marker was set up by a Horning assist. Horning, who had 11 goals and 14 assists last season, extended his streak to 15 consecutive games with a point after his helper this afternoon.

Burke’s goal came in the final minute of the first frame as he converted a feed from Beckwith to rattle the cage. The 2017 CAA Preseason Player of the Year has totaled a point in all 18 games of his collegiate career after netting his first goal of the young campaign.

Burke’s tally, which cut the Richmond lead to 3-2, marked Fairfield’s last goal for a span of over 11 minutes as the Spiders opened up an 8-2 advantage. At that juncture, Panepinto won a scramble for a ground ball on the door step, scooping and scoring to send the Stags into the locker room facing an 8-3 deficit.

The Stags, however, were unable to score in the second half against the Spiders. Richmond, which was coming off of an 11-5 campaign and a trip to the Southern Conference Championship Game, added seven markers after the intermission to close out a 15-3 final margin.

Tyler Behring started in goal for the Stags and made nine saves to go along with five ground balls. Brad Nordstrom took over the cage for the fourth quarter and turned away five shots.

Richmond was led offensively by four goals and four assists from Teddy Hatfield and a six-point afternoon (4g, 2a) from Ryan Lee. Benny Pugh went the distance in goal and made 14 saves for the Spiders.

Game 2: Fairfield at BucknellTwelve Stags Post Points in 13-12 Win at Bucknell

Colin Burke leads the offense with four goals and two assists

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Twelve different Stags contributed at least one point as the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team topped host Bucknell, 13-12. Colin Burke led the scoring effort with four goals and two assists in the Stags’ first victory of 2017.

In addition to Burke’s six-point day, Fairfield (1-1) got two goals apiece from Jake Knostman and Dave Fleming. Travis Ford netted a goal for the second straight game, while Alex Wagner, Kendall Keahey, Joe DeLasho and Matt Sharpe all converted the first goal of their respective careers. Dylan Beckwith, Jack Brennan and Joe Rodrigues each handed out two assists, while Wagner and Drew Murray contributed one assist apiece.

Fairfield’s 13 goals match the Stags’ 2016 season high attained in wins over Georgetown and Quinnipiac.

DeLasho helped the Stags control possession from the faceoff ‘X’, where he won a career-best 16 draws on 26 attempts. He also came away with a game-high and personal-best 10 ground balls. Will Fox aided the effort with a 2-for-2 day on the draw.

In the cage, Tyler Behring made 14 saves while going the distance to earn the win. In front of Behring, Andrew Eidenshink and Riley Peters each scooped up three ground balls.

Bucknell (2-1) was led by six points (two goals, four assists) from Will Sands, five points (four goals, one assist) by Sean O’Brien and a Connor O’Hara hat trick. Christian Klipstein made 10 saves in goal, ceding 11 of Fairfield’s 13 goals in 57:02 of work.

The Bison struck first in the contest, keeping Fairfield off the board in the first quarter en route to a 2-0 advantage. However, the Stags responded with four straight markers in the second frame. Wagner and Fleming each converted passes from Burke to tie the game at 2-2, and then the 2017 CAA Preseason Player of the Year rattled the cage himself to put Fairfield in front. Ford added a man-up goal on Murray’s feed to extend the margin to 4-2. Knostman added the first goal of his senior campaign to keep the Stags on top as Bucknell netted a pair to send the game into the intermission with Fairfield leading, 5-4.

Burke and Fleming each scored less than 100 seconds into the third quarter, but the Bison responded in kind to hold the Stags’ lead at one goal, 7-6, with 8:50 to go in the period. At the point, Fairfield accounted for the next four markers, starting with Burke’s second of the day. DeLasho picked up the ensuing faceoff and took it all the way to score his first career goal just eight seconds later. Burke then capped his hat trick, and Keahey added a goal on Rodrigues’ second assist of the afternoon to close the run with the Stags holding an 11-6 lead.

That lead would evaporate, however, as Bucknell accounted for five straight goals over a period of 9:15 to tie the game at 11-11 with 6:54 to play. Sharpe was the man to snap the deadlock, converting a pass from Brennan to put Fairfield back on top, 12-11, with 4:23 to go. Knostman then added the goal that proved to be the game-winner with 2:39 left. Bucknell struck once more in the closing seconds, but DeLasho won his 16th and final draw of the day with Beckwith swooping in to grab the ground ball as time ran out on a 13-12 Fairfield victory.

The Stags went 13-for-17 on faceoffs in the second half with Fox winning both of his attempts and DeLasho posting an 11-for-15 mark over the final two periods.

For the game, the Stags were outshot, 51-34, and won the ground ball battle by a 30-29 count. Fairfield was 12-for-13 clearing the ball and committed 12 turnovers while forcing seven Bucknell giveaways.

Behring’s 16 saves marked a season high for the senior, who was a First Team All-CAA selection last spring. The defensemen in front of the cage forced 14 Rutgers turnovers, including two caused by Andrew Murrow, who also collected four ground balls.

Offensively, Fairfield (1-2) got goals on the afternoon from Joe Rodrigues, Matt Sharpe and Alex Wagner with Colin Burke notching an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 20 consecutive games.

At the faceoff ‘X’, Joe DeLasho went 4-for-9 while Will Fox added a 3-for-6 performance. The action in the midfield was also aided by Samuel Murphy, who gathered three ground balls to go along with a caused turnover for the sophomore.

After nearly seven minutes of scoreless lacrosse, the Rutgers attack began the stretch that would ultimately decide the game. Jeff George started the scoring at the 8:04 mark in the first quarter, followed less than 60 seconds later by a Jules Heningburg marker. Connor Murphy added the first of his three goals on the day at the 5:28 mark as the Scarlet Knights carried a 3-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The Stags were kept off the board until midway through the second quarter, with George and Christian Scarpello each rattling the cage for Rutgers before Rodrigues broke through to cut the deficit to 5-1 with 7:36 remaining in the opening half. However, goals from Casey Rose and Murphy would extend the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 7-1 heading into the intermission.

The Fairfield attack started to click in the opening stages of the third quarter beginning with a Sharpe goal with 13:23 on the clock. Less than a minute later Burke connected with Wagner for a marker that cut the margin to 7-3.

However, while the Fairfield defense kept Rutgers on the board for the entire third quarter – a drought that lasted over 20 minutes of game time in total – the Stags would not score again in the contest. Rutgers ended their dry spell with 10:02 to play as Murphy completed his hat trick for the Scarlet Knights to round out the 8-3 final score.

Both goalkeepers did their part in the second half with Behring making nine of his 16 stops after the break and Rutgers’ netminder Max Edelmann making six of his nine saves following halftime.

Rutgers (3-0) was led by Murphy’s hat trick and two goals from George. Rose added a goal and two assists for the Scarlet Knights.

Game 4: Fairfield at UMass LowellStags Surge Past Host UMass Lowell, 8-7

Beckwith racks up two goals and an assist

LOWELL, Mass. – The Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team scored five of the last goals of the game to come away with an 8-7 victory at UMass Lowell. Dylan Beckwith scored two goals with one assist for the Stags, and Travis Ford capped his two-goal day with the game-winning marker in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.

Alex Wagner added a goal and an assist for Fairfield (2-2), as freshmen accounted for five of the Stags’ eight goals. Joe Rodrigues, Jake Knostman and Colin Burke also rattled the cage for Fairfield, with Burke also handing out an assist. The 2017 CAA Preseason Player of the Year extended his point-scoring streak to 21 consecutive games – a run that encompasses his entire career.

Will Fox helped control the game on the draw, posting a 14-of-19 mark with nine ground balls. Wagner added five ground balls while Beckwith and Matt Borda collected four apiece.

In the cage, Brad Nordstrom made his first start since 2015 and came away with 10 saves to earn the win. The Fairfield defense in front of Nordstorm was guided by two ground balls and two caused turnovers from freshman Andrew Murrow and a pair of ground balls collected by Andrew Eidenshink.

After falling behind 2-0, the Stags tied the game late in the first quarter as Beckwith and Wagner each banged home a goal to knot the contest at 2-2. After a man-up marker put the River Hawks back in front, 3-2, Rodrigues converted to tie the score with 12:52 remaining in the opening half.

UMass Lowell (1-3) climbed in front, 5-3, with back-to-back goals but Fairfield once again struck to tie the contest before the quarter came to a close. Once again, it was Beckwith who started the action with a goal followed by Ford rattling the cage in the final minute of the half to send the contest into the intermission tied at 5-5.

Fairfield’s run continued out of the break as Knostman’s third goal of the spring staked the Stags to their first lead of the day, 6-5, with 6:14 remaining in the third quarter. After being kept of the scoreboard for more than 17 minutes of game time, the River Hawks ended their drought and tied it up at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

UMass Lowell struck first in the final frame to grab a 7-6 advantage but would not score again as the Stags made their final push to take the victory. First, Burke sprinted from behind the cage and sent home a sprawling attempt to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:55 to play. Then, with 3:25 left, Ford fired home his second of the afternoon to put Fairfield on top, 8-7. The Stags made two defensive stops down the stretch to preserve their second victory of the spring.

The River Hawks were led by three goals and an assist from Sean Tyrrell, with Jon Phillips adding three points (one goal, two assists) off the bench. Grant Lardieri made 16 saves in the cage for UMass Lowell.

Game 5: Fairfield at #18 Stony BrookNo. 18 Stony Brook Holds off Stags, 9-6Wagner and Keahey each score twice for Fairfield

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – A 5-0 third quarter for host Stony Brook proved decisive as the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team fell, 9-6, at the No. 18 nationally-ranked Seawolves on Long Island. Alex Wagner and Kendall Keahey each scored two goals for the Stags, while Colin Burke racked up three points with a goal and two assists.

Burke’s three points extend his scoring streak to 22 consecutive games – a run that encompasses his entire collegiate career to date. The Tewaaraton Award Watch List candidate leads the Stags this season with seven goals and six assists. In this afternoon’s outing, Fairfield (2-3) also got a goal from Travis Ford, with Dylan Beckwith notching his fifth assist of the spring.

The Stags’ defense was strong against a Stony Brook (4-0) attack that entered the day averaging 17 goals per game and most recently netted 25 in a 25-17 rout of then-No. 10 Brown. In addition to a season-low scoring output for Stony Brook this afternoon, Fairfield pressured the Seawolves into a season-high 17 turnovers. Tyler Behring made six saves in the cage in 58:28 of work, and Brad Nordstrom turned away the lone shot he faced over the final 1:32.

Will Fox led the effort in the midfield with an 8-for-14 showing on the draw and six ground balls.

The only goal of the first quarter came off the stick of Keahey, whose second marker of the year staked Fairfield to a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes of action. Following an equalizer by Cory VanGinhoven, Keahey struck again – this time courtesy of a Beckwith feed – to put the Stags back on top 2-1, with 8:44 remaining in the second frame. After Stony Brook pulled even once again, Ford and Wagner each converted late in the period to send Fairfield into the locker room holding a 4-2 advantage.

After the intermission, the Seawolves came out firing with five unanswered goals in the third quarter. Alex Corpolongo scored twice in the stanza, including a marker with just two seconds on the clock to cap the run and extend the Stony Brook advantage to 7-4 entering the fourth quarter.

After nearly seven scoreless minutes in the final frame, Burke got on the board to cut the margin to 7-5. However, the next two goals went to Stony Brook to salt the game away. The Stags’ last tally saw Wagner convert a pass from Burke in the closing minute of action, rounding out the margin at its 9-6 final.

Corpolongo and VanGinhoven each potted two goals for the Seawolves, while Ryan Blitzer added a goal and two assists. Brandon Maciejewski earned the win in the cage with six saves.

Game 6: Fairfield at #15 YaleDouble Overtime Thriller Goes to No. 15 Yale, 11-10Stags erase a six-goal deficit in the second half to force extra time

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Fairfield erased a six-goal deficit in the second half to force overtime against host Yale. But unfortunately for the Stags, it was the No. 15 Bulldogs who found the back of the net in the second extra session to escape Reese Stadium with an 11-10 win. Travis Ford had a career-high four goals for the Stags.

In addition to Ford’s quartet of goals for the Stags (2-4), Colin Burke netted a hat trick to extend his team-leading totals to 10 goals and 16 points. Dylan Beckwith had a pair of markers, including the game-tying tally in the closing minutes of regulation, and Jake Knostman added one. Drew Murray, Jack Brennan and Dave Fleming each handed out an assist to round out the scoring.

Tyler Behring made 12 saves in the cage, including several highlight reel stops at point blank range. The First Team All-CAA netminder also scooped up three ground balls. The defense in front of Behring was guided by three caused turnovers from freshman Andrew Murrow.

After falling behind 5-0 after the first quarter of action, Ford put the Stags on the board three minutes into the second frame. The Bulldogs would add two more goals before Burke capped the first half scoring with a strike to send Fairfield into the locker room trailing, 7-2.

Matt Gaudet scored his fourth goal for Yale (2-3) to start the second half scoring, staking the Bulldogs to an 8-2 advantage. At that point, the Stags rattled off four straight tallies – two from Ford and one apiece by Beckwith and Burke - to trim the margin to 8-6. Jack Tigh’s goal in the final minute of the quarter extended the Bulldogs’ edge to 9-6 entering the fourth quarter.

In a span of less than five minutes in the last stanza of regulation, the Stags pulled even for the first time since the opening whistle. First Knostman rattled the cage for his fourth of the season, followed by back-to-back man-up goals for Ford and Burke to knot the count at 9-9 midway through the frame. Tigh put Yale back on top, 10-9, at the 6:25 mark of the period, but the Stags struck last in the quarter as Beckwith eluded his defender and converted with 3:11 remaining to level the score at 10-10.

After two possessions for each side came up empty in the first overtime, the contest headed into its second extra period. Again, both teams made a scoreless trip before Ben Reeves connected on the game-winner to give the decision to Yale, 11-10.

The Bulldogs were led by five points from Reeves, who netted a hat trick to go along with two assists. Gaudet also had a five-point outing, scoring four times prior to distributing the assist on Reeves’ game-winner. Brody Wilson made six saves to earn the win in the cage in his collegiate debut for Yale.

The game marked the third time in the last four meetings that Fairfield and Yale have gone into overtime, including the second straight meeting contested at Reese Stadium. The Stags’ last double-overtime game prior to this afternoon was a 12-11 win over CAA foe Delaware on April 18, 2015 at Rafferty Stadium.

Game 7: Fairfield at #2 Penn StateNo. 2 Penn State Escapes With 9-8 Decision on ESPNU

Colin Burke nets four goals for Fairfield in the nationally-televised affair

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Led by four goals from Colin Burke, the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team played No. 2 nationally-ranked Penn State to a dead heat for most of their encounter in State College. But ultimately, a Nittany Lions’ goal with 3:07 to play proved decisive as the hosts preserved their unbeaten season with a 9-8 decision.

Fairfield (2-5) is the first team to limit Penn State to less than 10 goals this season. Tyler Behring headed that effort in the cage with 14 saves, while the defensemen in front of him forced the Nittany Lions into 14 turnovers.

Burke’s four goals improved his team leading totals to 14 goals and 20 points. It also marked the second consecutive hat trick for the CAA Preseason Player of the Year. Travis Ford, Dave Fleming, Joe Rodrigues and Jake Knostman each added one goal with Knostman, Charlie Horning, Dylan Beckwith and Drew Murray each handing out an assist.

Penn State’s 8-0 start is the best in program history. The Nittany Lions were led by two goals and an assist from Nick Aponte and two Matt Florence goals.

After Will Fox came away with the opening draw, the Stags embarked on a nearly five-minute opening possession that resulted in the game’s first goal. After Fairfield fired six shots – including two on goal- the seventh from the back of the cage as Knostman converted a pass from Beckwith to stake the Stags to a 1-0 advantage.

Penn State would knot the game at 1-1 on a transition goal from Nick Aponte, but the Stags struck twice more in the opening quarter. First, Ford fired home a pass from Knostman to put Fairfield back on top following by Burke wrapping around and shaking his defender to cap the period with the Stags leading, 3-1.

The defenses continued to control the action in the second quarter. The Stags were kept off the board for the entire stanza, and Penn State scored twice in the final two minutes as the clubs went into the intermission knotted at 3-3.

The Stags started the scoring again in the second half. After the defense fought off a long Nittany Lions’ possession, Horning found Rodrigues in front, and the junior rattled the cage to put Fairfield back in front, 4-3. The lead was short lived, as Penn State scored just 95 seconds later, but the Stags responded with Burke’s second of the day – assisted by Murray – to make it a 5-4 game in favor of Fairfield. At that point, however, the nation’s highest scoring offense went on its first run of the day as the Nittany Lions scored the last three markers of the frame to head to the final quarter holding a 7-5 advantage.

Burke dialed up a pair of unassisted markers in the fourth quarter to tie the game again, and Fleming rifled one home from distance to put the Stags on top, 8-7. The lead lasted just nine seconds, however, as Penn State’s Gerard Arceri won the ensuing faceoff and went coast-to-coast to tie the game at 8-8 with 7:58 to play.

Unfortunately for the Stags, there was only one goal left to come in the contest, and it belonged to the Nittany Lions as Mike Sutton got the game winner for the hosts with 3:07 to play. Fairfield had one final opportunity to net the equalizer, but Penn State goalie Colby Kneese made the last and biggest of his 12 saves with 65 seconds to go and the Nittany Lions ran out the clock on a 9-8 decision.

“I’m incredibly proud of our performance and effort today,” said Head Coach Andy Copelan. “We’re not happy to be 2-5, but I think the silver lining is how much we’ve improved since the season began. When conference play rolls around, I’m not sure if there is another team in the country that will be as battle-tested as us with the schedule we’ve played so far. We just need to take that glass half-full mentality and get back to work next week.”

Game 8: Fairfield vs. NJITStags Power Past NJIT, 13-6

Beckwith and Ford each net hat tricks for Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Led by hat tricks from freshmen Dylan Beckwith and Travis Ford, the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team powered past visiting NJIT, 13-6, on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Nine different players notched points for the Stags en route to matching their season high of 13 goals in the home victory.

Fairfield (3-5) snaps a three-game losing streak with the win over the Highlanders. In addition to matching their season-high scoring output, the Stags limited an opponent to single-digit tallies for the fifth time in their last six outings.

Beckwith totaled a career-best five points with two assists to go along with his hat trick. Ford’s hat trick was the second of his career; he was previously named CAA Rookie of the Week after tallying four goals at Yale on March 11.

Dave Fleming and Jake Knostman each added two goals, while Colin Burke, Kendall Keahey and Joe Rodrigues netted one apiece. Rounding out the offense were Rodrigues, Fleming, Liam DaRos and Adam Riestis with one assist each.

Helping to keep the Stags’ offense on the field was Joe DeLasho, who went 14-of-18 on the draw with eight ground balls. Will Fox and Liam Lynch each added a win on the dot as Fairfield came away with 16-of-22 faceoffs in total. Also aiding the possession effort was Samuel Murphy with three ground balls.

In the cage, Tyler Behring made eight saves to earn the win. The Fairfield defense pressured NJIT into 16 turnovers, including three caused by JB Smith and two forced by Logan Williamson.

NJIT (0-9) was led by four goals from Aaron Forster and two from Ryan Callaghan, and Matt Brown and Ryan Kaden each handed out one assist. Cameron Cronk started in the cage and ceded eight goals with three saves. Nick Marzullo finished the effort in goal, coming away with nine saves with allowing five Fairfield tallies.

The Stags were off to a fast start this afternoon with four different players rattling the cage to stake Fairfield to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. Ford completed his hat trick before the intermission, scoring twice in a 6-0 second frame to send the Stags into the locker room with a 10-2 advantage. Prior to today, Fairfield’s last 10-goal half came in a 13-9 win over Colgate on March 14, 2015 at Rafferty Stadium.

Beckwith accounted for two of the Stags’ three second-half goals – with Knostman adding the other for his second of the day – as Fairfield cruised to a 13-6 triumph.

Game 9: Fairfield vs. VillanovaVillanova Upends Stags, 18-9

Murray and Burke each tally four points

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Drew Murray and Colin Burke each had hat tricks to pace the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon, but visiting Villanova had the first five goals of the day and never looked back to take an 18-9 decision on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Travis Ford also scored two markers for the Stags.

Burke also handed out an assist to notch a four-point day and run his team-leading totals to 18 goals and 25 points, while Murray’s hat trick was comprised of his first three goals of the spring. After his pair of goals, Ford has 15 thus far in his freshman campaign. Rounding out the scoring for Fairfield (3-6) were Dylan Beckwith with his eighth goal of the year and Liam DaRos with his second assist in as many games.

The Stags held an edge on the faceoff dot, led by a 15-of-26 showing with six ground balls from Joe DeLasho. Will Fox added a 4-of-5 showing, and Spencer Noonan scooped up three ground balls from the wing to aid the effort on the draw.

Tyler Behring made 10 saves in the cage, and the defense in front of him was paced by four ground balls and three caused turnovers by Andrew Eidenshink.

Jack Curran (3 goals, 2 assists), Christian Cuccinello (2g, 3a) and Jake Froccaro (4g, 1a) each had five points to guide Villanova (5-4) to its fourth consecutive win. The Wildcats’ goal was helmed by Nick Testa, who made 14 saves.

Villanova’s 5-0 run to open the game featured five different goal scorers as the Wildcats grabbed an advantage over the first 5:29 of action. The Stags got on the board at the 6:56 mark in the first quarter on a Ford goal, and the rookie struck again just 62 seconds later to trim the deficit to 5-2. Murray added his first of the day to shave the margin further, but Froccaro scored twice in the closing minutes of the period to extend the Wildcats’ lead to 7-3.

Villanova scored five more goals in the second quarter, while Murray converted a Burke pass for the lone Fairfield goal, as the visitors carried a 12-4 advantage into the locker room.

After the Wildcats opened the third-quarter scoring, the Stags put together their strong offensive stretch of the afternoon starting with an unassisted Beckwith goal. Burke then scored again to cut the lead to 13-6 and cashed in on a man-up opportunity – assisted by DaRos – to make it a 13-7 game.

However, the next five goals all went the way of the Wildcats before Murray and Burke each scored late to cap their respective hat tricks and round out the game’s 18-9 final score.

Game 10: Fairfield vs. #6 HofstraNo. 6 Hofstra Tops Stags, 10-6, in CAA Opener

Beckwith leads the offense with three points

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield opened its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule with a 10-6 loss to unbeaten and No. 6 nationally-ranked Hofstra on Saturday night on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Dylan Beckwith paced the Stags offensively with two goals and an assist.

Fairfield (3-7, 0-1 CAA) also got two goals from Joe Rodrigues and a marker apiece from Travis Ford and Drew Murray. Beckwith, Ford, Murray, Andrew Eidenshink and Jake Knostman each distributed an assist for the Stags.

The Stags’ attack was started by solid performances on the draw from Joe DeLasho and Will Fox. DeLasho went 8-of-11 on the dot with three ground balls, and Fox added a 6-of-9 showing. Riley Peters aided the effort from the wing with three ground balls of his own.

Tyler Behring started in the cage and made 10 saves for the Stags. Brad Nordstrom spent the last 2:11 of the contest between the posts and did not face a shot.

Hofstra (9-0, 1-0 CAA) continues the best start in program history and stands as one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the nation (Penn State). The Pride were paced this evening by five points (2g, 3a) from Josh Byrne with Ryan Tierney and Brendan Kavanagh posting matching statlines of one goal and two assists.

The Pride was anchored from the defensive side of the field by goalkeeper Jack Concannon. Concannon turned away 16 shots and also collected four ground balls to keep the Stags’ attack at bay.

Fairfield opened the scoring with a transition goal started by a turnover on the defensive end. The ball found the stick of Eidenshink who raced all the way down the field before connecting with Beckwith for the day’s first goal. Eidenshink’s assist was the first career point for the All-America defenseman.

Hofstra responded with the game’s first run to take a 3-1 lead before the Stags capped the first period scoring with a man-up tally from Ford. The goal was his 16th of the season and his team-leading fourth man-up marker of the spring.

Ford’s goal, however, was the Stags’ last until the fourth quarter as Fairfield was kept off the board for a span of 35:49 as the Pride opened up an 8-2 advantage. The drought was ended on a Murray goal that started Fairfield’s first scoring run of the game. The marker was followed by a man-up tally banged home by Rodrigues and Beckwith’s second of the day to trim the deficit to 8-5 with 7:41 to play.

However, the next two goals went to the Pride as Alex Moeser’s goal ended the streak and Kavanagh tacked one on into the vacated cage and Behring joined his defensemen in applying extra pressure looking to force a late Hofstra turnover.

Rodrigues’ second goal of the day – on a Beckwith assist – capped the scoring with 2:11 to go to round out the final margin at 10-6.

The Stags outshot Hofstra, 37-33, and the ground ball battle was even at 23-23. Both squads went 2-of-3 on their extra-man opportunities, and Fairfield committed 10 turnovers to Hofstra’s nine giveaways.
