Fairtrade grew in importance within the banana industry in the Dominican Republic.
Here, half of the bananas exported are now Fairtrade certified.
The Dominican Republic has become a key origin for European markets and the UK in particular.

Fairtrade banana sales in 2014
The volume of Fairtrade banana sales reported by producers grew by 15% since 2012–13.
Much of this was due to growth in sales of Fairtrade organic bananas which increased as a result of promotion by major supermarket chains in France, Germany and Sweden.

Fairtrade banana Premium usage in small producer organizations
Banana farmers chose to invest around 54% of their Fairtrade Premium in their organizations.
They spent 36% of the Fairtrade Premium on a range of direct services to farmers, such as tools and equipment.

Fairtrade banana Premium usage in hired labour organizations
Workers on banana plantations invested 34% of their Fairtrade Premium in improving worker housing, which has been a particular priority for workers in Colombia.
Overall, Fairtrade banana workers chose to spend 21% of their Fairtrade Premium on education-related investments.

Legalization of migrant labour
In the Dominican Republic, Fairtrade continues to focus on the legalization of migrant labour.
Much has been achieved within Fairtrade plantations, where 97% of migrant workers have now been officially registered via regularization processes supported by Fairtrade.
