Dear Parents/ Carers,
WELCOME TO TERM 4
Welcome back to Term 4. Term 4 is always an exciting time of year with lots of learning and celebrations
planned ahead. There are many things happening over the term for the students, teachers and parents/
carers. Be sure to check the School App and your child’s bag for information regarding school events!
Staff at Fairvale have attend a series of twilight professional learning sessions this year to enable the last
school day to be Wednesday 19 December, 2018 for both staff and students.
STAFF NEWS
Firstly, I would like to thank Mrs Karam for relieving as principal during my long service leave. Ms Batar
relieved as deputy principal and Miss Wulf as assistant principal during this time also. I always know
that the school is in safe hands whenever I am not here, whether it is for one day or for much longer.
Secondly, a big congratulations to Mrs Farnham who has been seconded to State Office to take on the
role as Literacy Coordinator for the rest of Term 4. Mrs Dean will relieve as Instructional Leader and
Miss Djukic as assistant principal.
ROCKETING AROUND THE SCHOOL WITH MR PITT
2/3 SMITH: Last Wednesday I visited 2/3S during a maths lesson. Children were practising their number skills by multiplying one by two digit numbers. I was able to walk around and talk to the children about their learning. It was great to hear children talk about number patterns and how they solved their answers. I was also able to ask some of the children more challenging questions which they answered! During the visit, some of the children took photos of their work so that they can share it with their parents on seesaw. Thank you 2/3S!
5/6 TRAEGER: On Monday I visited 5/6T during maths groups. The children took turns to complete two rotations. The first rotation was a partnered game called First Connect Three. The object of the game was to roll two dice; either subtract or add the dice to see if the number appeared on the card. The winner was the first person to get three in a row. Children were also able to use negative numbers for the game. For the second activity, children were completing mathematical problems using google classroom. It was important for the children to show their working out as this helps them to explain, step by step, the strategies they used to solve each problem. It is always fun watching mathematicians at work! Great effort 5/6T!
SCHOOL BANKING
Fairvale Public School offers the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. School
Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop
good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking
earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards. There are also great
rewards for the school too. The program is coordinated by parents from our school who volunteer each
and every Thursday collecting and sorting all the bank books. I have included information regarding
School Banking in this edition of the newsletter.
WALKATON
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the school Walkathon last Wednesday. Thankfully the sun was hidden behind a cloudy sky but we managed to get it done. This is a whole school effort and thank staff and the children for

participating. It is now time to return the money raised from the event. We ask that this is returned to the office in an envelope with your child’s name, class and amount by next Friday 2 November. Prizes will be awarded for the class that raises the most money and for stage winners. Thank you to Miss Wulf for coordinating the event.
SCHOOL CONCERT
We hope you have had the opportunity to see your child perform in the School Concert—Those were the days! Children performed in 3 shows—Wednesday 24/10 (matinee and evening) and Thursday 25/10 (matinee). We hope you enjoyed the amazing concert. As I said at each concert, there is no better feeling than watching our Fairvale children perform on stage. Their big, happy smiles said it all. As you know these events are not possible without the support of the community—thank you for the parents/ carers for allowing your child to take part in the three shows. A big thank you to the staff—classroom teachers have choreographed items and made costumes, whilst other staff members have had significant roles behind the scenes—sound, lighting, writing scripts, etc. The whole event would not be possible without the School Concert Committee, led by Mrs Olivera. Thank you one and all.
2019 KINDER TRANSITION
Kindergarten Transition commences next week. Attendance at the information session in Week 3 and
the subsequent transition sessions is very important. The parent information sessions provide
valuable information for families to support their child’s start to school life. Information will include
supporting student learning in literacy and numeracy, Best Start assessment processes, strategies to
support effective transition to school life and school procedures. The transition sessions for the 2019
students provides an opportunity for them to become familiar with the classroom environment and to
meet some teachers and peers. It is an exciting time for the school and families. If you know of any families who have
children starting school in 2019 and have not enrolled, can you please let them know to come and visit the office. If you
have any questions regarding Kindergarten Transition please contact the office or Mrs Herps.
WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
Friday 5th October was World Teachers’ Day. This is a day that we celebrate all the wonderful things our
teachers do for children all over our country. For us here at Fairvale, we are going to celebrate a World
Teachers’ Day in Week 4. Instead of a day, we are going to celebrate the whole week! We will
acknowledge the dedicated, hardworking teaching staff we have here at Fairvale Public School. Don’t
forget to say happy World Teachers’ Week in Week 4 to your teacher. You might decide to surprise
him or her with a special card, poem or even a song – I know they will appreciate your kindness. Don’t
forget our support teachers who also work with all our children each and every day. Our school captains,
Zaki and Martina and Mrs Karam and I have some surprises up our sleeves!
Have a great fortnight!

Instructional Rounds
Last week we had some visiting
teachers for Instructional Rounds. This
is a process where teachers come
together from other schools to discuss
a ‘Problem of Practice’. The teachers
engaged in discussion and research
around classroom teaching and then
visited our classrooms. The visiting
teachers commented on how amazing
our students and teachers are. We will
use the information gained from
Instructional Rounds to help us plan
for 2019.

Concert
On Wednesday I was fortunate
enough to watch our entire concert. I
was so impressed with the talent,
dedication and passion shown by our
students. A huge thank you to the
concert committee and in particular
Mrs Olivera for organising our
biannual concert. I know how much
time and effort has gone into planning
this huge event. It was amazing!
Congratulations to our wonderful
students.
PaTCH
Last week I visited our Parents as
Teachers and Classroom Helpers
(PaTCH) during their workshop in our
professional learning room. It was great
to see and hear the parents engage in
learning. The parents have been
working with our teachers on a
fortnightly basis engaging in practical
literacy and numeracy sessions. The
parents then volunteer in the classroom
putting their new skills into action! We
also presented Mrs Rosie Farnham with
some flowers as she will be working in
state office for the rest of the year.

Last week, we held our annual Walkathon. This event helps
Stage 3 raise money for our end of year events. We were very
scared that the rain would come and that we would have to
postpone, however, the rain held off and we were able to
continue with our event.
The students had a great time walking around the school,
challenging the teachers and each other to see who could walk
the most laps. When the students were not walking, they
participated in various sporting activities and when at a rest
stop, were able to enjoy delicious, juicy oranges.
Fairvale would like to send a massive thank-you to
Woolworths at Neeta City, who sponsored our Walkathon by
donating hundreds of oranges so that our students could
refresh themselves and have something yummy to eat.
I would like to thank the students, school community and staff
for helping to make our Walkathon a success.
Please remember to bring in any sponsorship money and
donations to the office.
There will be prizes for the winning class and an individual
stage winner, to be announced later in the term.

Slushie Maker Cup
Zoom Flying Disc School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year. Getting involved in School Banking is easy! All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways: 1. Online Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. 2. In branch Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate. If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet. School Banking day is Thursdays. Each week you need to give your bankbook to your class teacher in the morning. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please
ask for a 2018 School Banking program information pack
from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/

The last week of school, we played lots of fun and exciting
games. We tried to see how many marshmallows we could
fit into our moths, during a game of Fluffy Bunny. Every time
we put a marshmallow into our mouth, we had to try and
say ‘Fluffy Bunny’ and if we couldn’t do it, we were out!
Someone got up to 10 marshmallows!!
Now that school is back, we are exploring different cultures
and traditions. We are having fun creating our own decora-
tions and colourful meanings to the Mexican tradition of the
‘Day of the Dead’ that occurs on November 2. it celebrates
ancestors and creating memories with family.
