Host PreparationHere are a few tips to help you prepare yourself and your cast for the murder mystery.

Read the Guide on How to Host a Host-Party Murder Mystery. This guide will give you all the specificson preparing for and hosting your party. This guide should have been emailed to you upon purchase. It isalso available from the Materials menu on the Host-Party website.

Guest Instructions

To play one of our murder mysteries requires no special acting abilities, just a willingness to have fun.Our site gives you all the details you need to prepare for the party including character descriptions of allguests, internal information about your character (do not reveal this to others), and costume/proprecommendations.

During the party, each of you will be given clues. The clues provide all the information required to unlockthe mystery. Each clue is designated as a clue to be concealed or a clue to be revealed. Conceal clues aregenerally information about your own character that you try to hide (without lying) from the others.Reveal clues are clues that you should share with others in casual conversation.

The mystery game is designed so that you and the others who are playing will mingle around askingquestions about each other's character and about clues you have received. As the game progresses, youwill gather more and more information and at the end of the allotted time you will need to sift throughwhat you think is fact and fiction to make your choice of who you is the murderer.

The characters can be played to suit the comfort zone of each player. If you like the spotlight or enjoy roleplaying, immerse yourself in your character’s persona and live the night as you think they would. Youmay even decide to exaggerate your character’s personality for even more effect. On the other hand, ifyou prefer to participate in a less theatrical capacity, you may want to sit on the couch and let peoplecome to you, approach each character off to the side or just listen in on other conversations until you getyour feet wet and are feeling a bit more comfortable.

There are only a few simple rules to follow when playing our games.

Round 1 - Looking Like A Fairy, Thinking Like A FairyRound InstructionsIn Round 1, the guests playing human girls arrive at the party in their street clothes with their fairycostumes in bags that are given to the host. Guests playing fairies can arrive in fairy costumes to savetime. As the game begins, human are separated until all the fairies, with their Queen/King burst in to givethem the good news!

Queen/King Echo reads a speech to start the festivities (Round 1 clue). After introductions, the humansput on the fairy costumes the Queen/King gives to them. Then the players get to know each other.

Activity 1 is a memory game called Stumbles. It gives the girls clues about each other's characters thatthey will use to solve the mystery. It is recommended that you do not skip this game entirely. If, however, any game or activity bores the guests, play for a little while then move on. Don't sacrifice the party for theback story.

Activity 2 is the Reading of the History. This is also a required activity as it reveals necessary informationin solving the mystery. This activity is self-explanatory.

Once The Reading of The History is done, guests could use a creative break. This next optional activity,Fairy Hair, is just the ticket. The final activity for Round 1, is also optional. It's called The FairyHomeland: A Movie. This is a fun, educational way for guests to learn about another country.

Then move on to Round 2.

Round Activity: StumblesObjective: To remember all the details about the other characters that are revealedduring play.

Rules: 1. Have the guests sit in a circle with a pile of stones or marbles (at leastten) in the middle.2. One guest starts by saying, "My name is _____ and my pet is a _____."3. The next guest repeats what the first guest said and adds her own information."Her name is _____ and her pet is a _____. My name is _____ and my pet is a_____."4. The third guest repeats the information from the first two and adds her owninformation to the end. "Her name is ____ and her pet is a _____. Her name is_____ and her pet is a _____. My name is _____ and my pet is a ____."5. Move around the circle like this until one guest stumbles and can't correctlyremember all the information that came before. That forgetful guest then takes arock from the center of the circle. She then starts over. "My name is _____ and mypet is a _____."6. Once all the girls have shared what their pets are, they should move around thecircle again to share their favorite flower, again for favorite rock, and again for theinstrument they play. Start over with the pets and cycle through flower, rock, andinstrument until every girl except one has a stone or marble from the middle of thecircle. The last girl left without a stone is the winner.

If the girls are having fun or the first game went very quickly, play again. Whenyou are done with the game, the winner(s) could get party favors as prizes.

Note: Ivy has no flower, Victoria has no favorite rock, Gwendolyn plays noinstrument, and Lily has no pet. In these cases, the girls would say, "My name is_____ and I have/play no _____." These clues come into play later in the party.

Equipment: At least 10 stones or marbles.

Playing Time: 15-30 minutes

Round Activity: Reading of The HistoryObjective: To build confidence and verbal skills.

Fairy Games Sample Print Kit

Host-Party.com Murder Mystery Games Page 6 of 24

Rules: The guests can take turns each reading a paragraph from The History, pages 3-4 in the "Book." If the guests' reading skills are not quite developedenough for that level of reading, the Queen/King (host) can read it to them.Practice reading aloud is preferred, however, because of its value in buildingconfidence and verbal skills.

Equipment: Needed: "Book: A Royal Guide to Fairy Life."

Playing Time: 10 minutes

Round Activity: Fairy HairObjective: To get (and give) a fun, new hair style.

Fairy Games Sample Print Kit

Host-Party.com Murder Mystery Games Page 7 of 24

Rules: Each girl should get out the hairbrush she brought. In addition, you willneed a bag or two of small, colored rubber bands (or covered hair bands ifpreferred) and strips of thin, colored ribbon (or yarn), about four feet in length.

Prepare the hair decorations by folding a ribbon in half and looping the ribbonaround a rubber band in a latch hook knot. Simply pull the two loose ends throughthe loop in the middle of the folded ribbon so it tightens around the rubber band.Make many of these ribbon bands (at least 4 or 5 per guest), but the more thebetter.

The girls start by selecting a small section of hair. Wrap the rubber band aroundthe section near the scalp so that the ribbons dangle down into the hair. The girlscan then braid or twist the ribbons into each other's hair. Secure braids at thebottom with left over rubber bands. The girls can also leave the ribbons loose toflow through their hair as long, strait ribbon highlights. Keep scissors on hand tocut lengths of ribbon and to cut the bands out of guests' hair at the end of the party.[Note: It's always better for an adult to cut the bands out carefully than for the girlsto rip the bands (and their hair) out by themselves.]

Equipment: Hairbrushes from home, rubber bands, and ribbons.

Playing Time: 15-35 minutes

Round Activity: Fairy Homeland: A MovieObjective: To learn about another country.

Fairy Games Sample Print Kit

Host-Party.com Murder Mystery Games Page 8 of 24

Rules: You can obtain a travel video from a travel agent or short culturaldocumentary from the local library. This video could be from any country that stirsthe imagination. Choosing a country that one or more of the girls has visited, orhas foreign relatives in (past or present), is a good choice as those countries haveadded meaning.

Guests that enjoy nature films are most likely to enjoy this activity. You knowyour guests best. If they start to lose interest in the movie, interrupt it and move toRound 2.

As Queen/King Echo, you remember the family homeland, whatever it is, so youcould make comments such as, "Is that old Mrs. Halverson in the background? Ihave not seen her in ages. Look at that bread! It was my favorite. Ah, now that isthe life for a fairy. We really should think about stopping back by there sometimein the next Turne, don't you think?"

Equipment: A movie about any country.

Playing Time: 20-60 minutes

Round 1 Script (Continued)King/Queen Echo (00:01): As the fairies enter to surprise the human girls, King/Queen Echo reads this speech:

"Look, Ladies, here they are! We have found (a) human(s) at last. Now theFestival of Games can begin. Do not look so confused, human(s). Allow me toexplain. We are fairies of the Pond Flower Troop, and we have chosen you toparticipate in our Festival of Games. You see, once every Turne, which is like ayear for you only much much longer, every fairy troop is allowed to find somehumans and spend a day teaching them how to be like us. Congratulations."

"We will be your guides for this day of fun. Fun is one of the most importantthings to fairies. That is why we use this, "Book." It helps us remember all therules to our favorite games and all our favorite stories. We just have to follow"Book" and you will learn everything you need to about living as a fairy."

"First thing is first. You do not look anything like fairies to me. We will get youdressed properly then we will get to know each other."

After the human girls have changed, begin the first activity. As you move fromactivity to activity, remember to stay in character. Staying in character is perhapsthe most important aspect of maintaining the fantasy for the guests and making theparty magical.

Round Activity: Cutthroat Math

Fairy Games Sample Print Kit

Host-Party.com Murder Mystery Games Page 14 of 24

Objective: To use math skills and strategy to be the last person not holding anystones.

Rules: Cutthroat Math is the fairies' way to sharpen their minds and play at thesame time! To set up the game, you will need numbered cards or signs, numbers1-20. The numbers themselves should be five inches tall or larger so they can beseen from anywhere inside the playing area. The playing area should be outside orin a large, open room.

Tape or pin these numbers up out of order. Some numbers should be on the floor, some on the walls, trees, or tabletops. There is no rhyme or reason to theplacement of the numbers, except that they should all be clearly visible. You willalso need the stones/marbles from "Stumbles" in Round 1 plus a few more.

When King/Queen Echo says, "Go," the players race from number to number in noorder, just running or walking however they want. The King/Queen calls "stop" afew seconds later. Once every player is touching a number (there can be multipleplayers touching the same number) the King/Queen reads a math question. Theplayers then race to be the first to solve the problem in their heads. There are fourpossibilities.

1. The first girl with the correct answer points to the girl touching the correctnumber card and calls out the answer. The girl touching the correct number thenhas to come take a stone.2. The first girl with the correct answer is also touching the correct answer. Shethen raises her hand and calls out the answer. If she has a stone, she gets to give itback to the King/Queen. If that girl has no stone, she can choose one of the playerswithout a stone and force them to take one. Cutthroat!3. The first girl to get the correct answer realizes that no one is touching thatnumber. She then runs to the correct number and, once she is touching it, raises herhand and calls out the answer. The other players, seeing her run, will realize theanswer and try to beat her there. The first person to touch the number, raise herhand, and call out the answer can then either give back her stone (if she has one) orchoose who must take a stone (if she does not have one).4. There are multiple players touching the correct answer card. If the first playerwith the correct answer is among them, the other players touching that numbertake stones. If the first player with the correct answer is not among them, everyonetouching the correct number takes a stone.

Players can take up to two stones, but no more. All players will continue playinguntil only one player is left with no stones. If someone calls out the wrong answer, ignore her until someone calls out the right answer. In this game, King/QueenEcho is the referee and makes all decisions regarding close calls. The last playerwithout a stone is the winner. This is a very physical, very verbal activity."Cutthroat" is the name of the game, after all.

You can play as many rounds as you wish and could give out party favors as prizesto the winners of each round. You can also modify the intensity of the mathquestions to suite your guests. A list of math problems is below the Equipment list.

King/Queen Echo (00:01): Read this after the last Round 1 activity.

Well, now you look like fairies, but you’re still acting like little human girls. Hmmm… Something willhave to be done about that. Let’s see… Ah, yes! I know just the thing. Fairies, let’s get ready for (insertname of next activity)!

Round 3 - Investigating Like A FairyRound InstructionsAt the start of Round 3, King/Queen Echo calls all the girls into a sitting area and asks them to makethemselves comfortable. In that sitting area you will have already placed the SECOND clues for Round 3(sealed in envelopes and marked with each human girl's name) in a pile off to the side. The clues shouldnot be readily visible but definitely not hidden. Once everyone is seated, King/Queen Echo reads his/herspeech (Round 3 Clue). The King/Queen's clue is the blueprint for this round, containing all theinformation needed for the Recipe Hunt.

Once all the clues have been found, Round 3 is over. Move on to Round 4 to confirm the assassin'sidentity and end the game.

King/Queen Echo (00:01): King/Queen Echo read:

"All you fairies know that the Festival of Games is almost at its end. In a moment, I will read the officialspeech to close the festival and we will return home. Before I do, I have something for the human girl(s)."

The King/Queen then hands each human her FIRST clue for Round 3. The human girl(s) then stand up,and one of them reads Alexandra's clue aloud to the group. The speech declares that the girls don't want togo home ever again but want to join the fairy troop.

The King/Queen says, "I have heard your plea, but such a big decision is not mine to make alone. Thewhole group must vote to decide. We will discuss the matter."

The King/Queen then turns and seems to notice the envelopes with the SECOND clue for Round 3, as ifthey've appeared by magic.

"Curious. When did these arrive?" he/she says, picking up the envelopes and handing them to the humangirls. "They have your names on them; you may as well read them."

The King/Queen then turns back to the group and reads the following while the girls open their letters.

"Now, fairies, this is a very important decision. I know we would all love to have new members, but wemust not let our excitement overcome our good judgment. Human girl(s), why do you look so concerned? What do your letters say?"

The letters tell the girls that they've just been poisoned.

After the humans have answered, the King/Queen says, "No one touch the letters. I know this poison andthere is an antidote. Rose, look in the "Book's" table of contents and find the information on poisons."

Once the girls discover that the pages they need have been torn out, the King/Queen says, "Read what'sleft of the page. Perhaps we can learn something."

After someone reads the remnant of page 12 aloud, the King/Queen says, "Well, we have learned manythings. We know that the one who made the poison must be near by because the poison can only bedeadly for a short time. That same person must have delivered the letters and will know where the pageswith the antidote are. The only clue we have is that we know the poison maker needed a large bowl. Rose, take the girls and the fairies and search the place where bowls are kept. Let me know what you find. Ifthere are clues, follow them until you find what we need to end this nightmare."

Along the way, clues printed in bold will eliminate certain fairies from the list of suspects. First, give theguests a chance to realize this on their own. If, however, they do not seem to catch it, King/Queen Echoshould say, for example,

"Oh, wait now. If my memory is correct, one of you cannot do magic. (Said in reference to a clue aboutmagic.) Which one of you is that? Well, then you cannot be the assassin, can you? You wouldn't havebeen able to make that poison."

Clues involving pets, speaking the Ancient Tongue, flowers, using Magic, and being a Dark Fairy (thefinal clue) could each eliminate one fairy suspect. If you don't have all the fairy characters filled, however, some clues printed in bold won't eliminate anyone. This is because there is no guest playing the part of thefairy that would have been eliminated by that clue. Check character descriptions to learn this informationabout the fairies.
