FAITH & PRACTICE: BEING REFORMED Sundays • May 31st—July 5th • 11:20 am • Flippen Chapel
Being Reformed: Following Jesus Today—We will be of-
fering a 6-week study in which we will consider what
following Jesus means in our personal lives and in the
church, reflecting on both the challenges and opportu-
nities of modern day discipleship. You can sign up for a
participant’s guide at the welcome kiosk on Sunday
mornings, priced at $4.95. The class will be led by
Leanne Strommen, Winston Presnall and Ken Zanca.
WORD & WINE Wednesdays • 5:30 pm • Grand Street Center, South Room
Every week Pastor Winston offers a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming
lectionary passage that will be used in the sermon. This hour long class pro-
vides an in-depth look into the research and exegesis that is used to form
the message. It also provides a great time of fellowship and discussion as
we explore together the meaning of Biblical texts each week before they are
preached. Wine is optional but always available! Feel free to bring your own
bottle to share. Contact Pastor Winston for further information or to join our
Word email list: 714 538 2341 x.109, [email protected].

THANK YOU! The Mission Committee would like to
thank all those who so generously con-
tributed to our One Great Hour Special
offering. Our church's contribution
toward our Presbyterian Disaster Relief
and Hunger projects was $917! We
have reason to be proud of being part of these
efforts to help people in desperate need, espe-
cially at this time.
A big thank you to all who sent cards, visited, tele-
phoned and brought food during my recovery from
back surgery. The meals were especially appreciat-
ed as it was one less thing Jim had to think about
while caring for Mom and me. I am fortunate to
have such a caring “family”. Blessings to all.
- Joyce Geisert
FOOD PANTRY
We thank our congregants and friends who have
been wonderfully generous in donating food for
the hungry. At this time items are needed for
bags that we pack for people with No Kitchen as
well as bags we pack for those With Kitchens.
These items include:
'No Kitchen' Bags:
Fruit, Tuna, Spam, Canned Pasta, Oatmeal Pack-
ets, Saltines. Please ensure all cans have pop-
top lids.
'Kitchen' Bags:
Peanut Butter (small), Dry Pasta (1lb bags), To-
mato Sauce, Mac and Cheese, Cereal (un-
sweetened).
PRAYING FOR THE MISSION
3
Updates from Zeteo Mission:
Kate and Esther have spent time while Kate is in Korea on retreat, (and getting her
Visa renewed) praying and discerning about the next steps for the mission. One
aspect of the work here that cannot be emphasized enough is the need for inten-
sive training, equipping, and mentoring to break the bondage that generations of
poverty have placed on hearts and minds. Our methods are slower than many insti-
tutional models, but we are committed to truly raising up leaders, not simply
providing jobs and programs. This also means being willing to flex and regroup as
we strive to keep our structure organic - responding to the ways we see God at
work in the lives of those around us, rather than trying to fit people into our frame-
works. It is not always comfortable, but we believe it is consistent with this crazy
adventure to which we are called. We are excited (and slightly terrified) as we take
a huge step in responsive faith.
We invite you to pray with us as we implement some big changes that we will be announcing in the next
few weeks. And we welcome your partnership as we make some of our boldest moves yet!
A great example of being responsive to the situations that we see around us is this story of an elderly
woman wandering through the blazing empty fields (temperatures have been hovering around 100 de-
grees). After calling her to the fence for some water, the team were able to start a conversation and
learn of her story. She had been spending her day wandering through the empty fields searching for
ears of corn to eat that might have been dropped by the harvesters. Sadly, the already slim pickings had
been well combed over by children and stray dogs, leaving her quite empty handed. We were able to
send this hard working grandmother home with some food relief - in the form of both canned goods and
fresh harvest from our garden.
As we look toward June and the opening of the new garden area, the team is spending tons of time
making sure every possible variety of edible plant will be ready for a try in the new area, going through
seed catalogs, and planting seeds in our nursery so that we have plenty of young plants ready for trans-
plant. This new garden will be the beginning of the Rosemary Hake Memorial Garden!
2015 One-Day Virtual Mission Trip—June 8th:
HOW IT WORKS: By joining in on the One-Day Virtual Mission Trip you are agreeing that on ONE DAY
(June 8th) you will carry out your daily business as usual. But, instead of your efforts that day benefiting
yourself or your family - your wages that day will be given to the mission. By every participant giving
their ONE DAY, we are united in purpose and in sacrifice - each person giving THEMSELVES for one day.
HOW TO CALCULATE the value of A DAY: The formula used to calculate a day's wages is to take your
annual income and multiply it by 0.004 - that is right, it is 0.4% of your income for the year. That is the
formula we will be using here too!
Just a note: One Day for a family with an income of $40,000/year can provide work for a day laborer
and his daily meal for more than 5 weeks! That is the power of a day!
Virtual Mission Trip Donations and donations in any amount can be made out to First Presbyterian
Church and will be transferred to Zeteo mission to help support their cause (Be sure to let us know that
your donation is for the mission).
FELLOWSHIP
OP HIKERS 2nd Saturdays • June 13th • 8:00 am • Off-Site
On a wonderful hiking day
in May the OP Hikers en-
joyed a leisurely 5.5 mile
hike in and around the
Modjeska and Harding Can-
yon areas. Modjeska Can-
yon was named after Mad-
ame Modjeska, a Shake-
spearean actress, who
made her home in the area
after she arrived from Poland in 1876. The trail was a wide
dirt road that followed the contours of the Canyon floor. Like
most of our hikes, we shared the trails with many bicycle rid-
ers who were both enjoying, and surviving, their downhill
experiences.
In June the OP Hikers will enjoy a 6 mile round-trip hike on
the Salt Creek Trail from the Chapparosa Community Park to
the Salt Creek Beach Park in the Laguna Niguel area. The
group will depart from the Church’s Maple Street parking
area.
Persons of all ages who are interested in hiking, fellowship,
and the outdoors are invited to participate in the OP Hiker
program. For further information please contact Bob McAulay
(714 293-8802) or Ellie Schilder (714 796-9227).

A LETTER FROM BRIAN BUSHany of you will have seen the message
posted about a month ago that my father, Robert (Bob) Bush passed away. A week later
my mother, Naomi Bush passed away.
In my earthly father, I am pleased to say, I saw
many attributes of our Heavenly Father – and I am thankful for that. Faithfulness, con-
sistency, respect and love of others, wisdom, and mercy…
influenced by the church – and faithfully brought us to
Sunday School, the church’s outstanding choral program, youth program, and church
work days too.
this city of Jerusalem will also raise my father, and the many loved ones of First Presbyter-
ian Orange past – demonstrating His great love for us all through the faithfulness of
Christ.

HEALTH MINISTRY
June is Home Safety month. The
Reader’s Digest has some sugges-
tions for you. 1) Keep car keys next
to your bed while you sleep. If you
suspect someone is trying to break
in press the Panic button – the car
horn will likely scare them away. 2)
Lower the volume of your telephone
answering service ringer so a
passerby won’t be able to hear it go
into voice mail indicating that no
one is home. 3) Plant thorny shrubs
such as roses beneath ground floor
windows to discourage burglars. 4) If
you are going away on vacation ask
a neighbor to check daily for flyers
stuck in your front door – criminals
have been known to leave ads to
see how long it takes for residents to
remove them. 5) Store valuables in
your child’s sock drawer rather than
your nightstand. Thieves tend to
leave children’s rooms alone.

June News
Proverbs 30:5
"Every word of God proves true"
We will be Celebrating parents, grandparents & special friends this month
with our annual. "Fiesta" in the playground: Wednesday, June 3rd from
11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
The children gathered at the garden and said a special prayer for Mr. Vic
Westling when we heard of his passing. He touched the lives of so many
children with his knowledge and was a wonderful role model of Christian
faith. We were so blessed to
know him. Thank you God.
Pre-school Library News: Ms. Dee is our official Librarian. Nothing had been
updated since Karen Godfrey set all the books up several years ago. Thank you to Connie Noren, Dee & her family for the
book donations, they are appreciated. The Orange Presbyterian Pre-School teaches & promotes the love of books,
reading & literacy. Each child that graduates from the pre-k class & going on to kindergarten will receive a book. We are
so thrilled to be able to do this!
Thank You: Clippers for your support & generosity for the new balls, shovels & classroom mirror. Ms. Betty for the
playground sand, classroom donations, the wonderful garden & all you do that enriches the lives of the children. Ms. Dee
for "Wednesday Storytelling"! We are blessed. To all who continue to support the Pre-school - we thank you. Please
continue to keep the school, children, their families & the teaching team in your prayers.
Mission News: We celebrate one of our "Casa Teresa Moms" Toni
Delgado - who graduated from Cal State Fullerton on May 16th with
her Bachelor's Degree in Human Services. Toni brought her son
Jacob to the Infant Center almost 5 years ago. Toni is a remarkable
Christian who we are blessed to know. We embraced her almost 5
years ago & she blessed us as a church by volunteering at the pre-
school, vacation bible school, and with many mission projects. Her
son Jacob is a graduate this year from the pre-school. Mom & son are sharing these milestones in their
lives. Please keep Toni and her family (4 children) in your prayers as she seeks employment in her field and as Jacob
leaves for kindergarten.
Wish List: little cups for wee little hands, fish crackers, Kleenex, baby wipes, old towels when you get new ones, small
salad type forks & when you replace your silverware we would love to have your old small spoons/teaspoons. We are
working on replacing the plastic. We feel the metal kind are healthier for the children.

influential in Christianity. “Revisiting the
struggles Paul faced and the authenticity and integrity of his

more magical place than

for seven-year-old Antoinette
and her brother, Jack. Toni
(her nickname) helps her
parents, Eddie and Adele
Stopka, at the stand where
they sell homemade French
fries amid the roar of the
Cyclone roller coaster.
There is also the lure of the world’s biggest salt-water pool,
complete with divers whose astonishing stunts inspire Toni,
despite her mother's insistence that girls can't be high di-
vers. But a family of dreamers doesn't always share the
same dreams, and then the world intrudes to complicate
matters..." Please join us for a discussion of this book over

SITE REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE
9
Joe Woollett - Chair, Site Redevelopment
New Beginnings 2015
Why has the site redevelopment process taken so long and
why does it seem so complicated?
The Session acted in May on a request to proceed into the
next phase of the process. This action defined the phases of
the project. It also allows our consultants to prepare more
detailed drawings, including elevations of the buildings and
more detailed plans.
A Town Hall meeting is being planned to present these new
documents to the Congregation. The presentation will include
detailed financial information about the process.
The documents will then be presented to the
City Design Review Committee who will deter-
mine conformance to Old Town standards. After
that, the project goes to the City Planning Com-
mission to obtain the Conditional Use Permit
(C.U.P.).
The CUP is a form of land-use-entitlement that
gives the applicant permission to construct the project de-
scribed by the documents. It also includes "conditions" im-
posed by the City that must be complied with as a part of the
process.
The "entitlement" process is a negotiation. Fortunately FPCO
has employed consultants who have many years of experience
with projects in the City of Orange, so they can anticipate
most "conditions" and also the acceptability of the
design itself. Furthermore, the Architects have met with City
representatives, and these representatives have met with the
SRTF. Big surprises are not expected.
What are the various stages of the work?
At the heart of the process are two primary goals of New Be-
ginnings:
1. Redirecting the church to a sustainable mission.
2. Providing supplementary funds to support the
bridge to a new church life.
Here-are the stages and phases of physical changes to facili-
ties:
Stage 1: (Completion, June 2017, estimated net income to
the church, $248,000 per year).
Phase 1: Move Administrative offices into the GSC and
McAulay Hall.
Phase 2: Demolish the Administration/Education Building,
construct temporary parking lot west of the sanctuary and
south of the child care play-yard.
Phase 3: Construct the Child Development Center on the
Grand Street parking property and renovate the toilet rooms
in the sanctuary building.
At the end of Stage 1, church facilities are in a sustainable
condition– everyone has an office, there is adequate parking,
worship can continue as before. A delay may be needed at
this point if interest rates are unstable or too high, but an im-
portant part of the New Beginnings process remains to be
done.
Stage 2: (Completion February 2019).
Phase Construct permanent parking south of McAulay Hall,
then construct the new fellowship hall and education facilities
on the west side of the sanctuary.
Phase 5: Demolish McAulay Hall, construct permanent parking
under the demolished building and north to the existing park-
ing at Maple and Orange Streets.
Phase 6: Construct the new office building on the northwest
corner of the property, where Church offices will be located
a l o n g w i t h r e n t a l o f f i c e s p a c e .
Phase 7: Move administrative offices into the new office build-
ing, complete the parking south of the office building.
Phase 8: Remove the chapel and construct parking and the
drive entrance south of the sanctuary. Renovate the GSC
building.
At the close of Stage 2, net income to the church to offset
operations expenses is expected to be about $257,000 per
year
Income-producing facilities are needed to build new low
maintenance, properly sized buildings and to supplement op-
erational expenses as giving fluctuates with a changing mem-
bership. This situation has been experienced by virtually all
religious institutions for the last 10 years. FPCO is taking a
bold leadership position for change in the Presbytery and de-
nomination.
