Sisters and brothers in Christ - In the movie “Big Fish” Albert Finney's character tells a joke about parrots in the Congo. He describes the birds talking back and forth to each other about almost anything in the world except religion. He's asked why the birds don't talk about religion and gives this memorable line: “It's rude to talk about religion, you never know who you are going to offend.” I would contend that for our society that we don't talk about religion or money. Thankfully as a pastor, I get around the former, still finances is a topic that is often taboo. Studies tell us that it can be a leading conflict in relationships, the worry about money can lead us to sleepless nights and still we often do not talk about how we budget, how we plan, how we spend. A third of all of Jesus parables talked about money or possessions. Back then money was just as forbidden of a topic, but Jesus told his followers: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” He reminded his disciples that an examination of how we spend our lives: how we spend our time, how we use our gifts, how we give of our money reflects where our trust, our treasure, our hearts are. Time, talent and treasure are often used in stewardship themes because they remind us that everyone has something to give. If you are fixed means and homebound, you can pray for those in

need – that is a gift of your time and talent. If you are a skilled sewer and creative with threads, you can give by helping quilt here, or by joining with the TOMs (The Old Men – they picked the name) to help with crafts. You can volunteer at FISH or Helping Hands. And of course, since God has blessed you, you can give to food banks, or to Faith Lutheran Church, or to great local organizations or the synod or Lutheran World Relief. We do this because Christ gave so much to us, because God has blessed us so richly. It's not fun to talk about, it's not easy to talk about, but giving: through time, through talent, through treasure is a fundamental part of our faith journey. It is the step that acknowledges all that God has done for us and seeks to share that with the world. I look forward to journeying with you in stewardship in September. Peace in Christ, Pastor Mark Bringman

RALLY DAY Have you ever wondered what Rally Day is? One of the definitions from the dictionary that applies is “to bring back to action, to revive” On September 11, 2016 we at Faith Lutheran, with our new Pastor, will be bringing back to action the ongoing learning about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, after a summer of lots of activities besides church.
The theme for Rally Day 2016 is Jesus is the Light of the World. On that day, we will have activities during Sunday School, during church and possibly after church to remind us to follow Jesus' example, to keep our light shining. We will share a scrumptious potluck meal after church and will have games for kids. See you there. Invite your friends. Rally Day Potluck: Each family is asked to bring a Main Dish AND a dessert or salad to share. Plates, silverware and beverages are provided.

The Bible studies that were canceled during the summer are beginning again. Thursday morning group, called Quail Run (until we decide on a new name) will meet September 8, 10 am at church. Pastor Mark will have a topic for us to study while we think about what to study next. Mary and Martha circle will meet September 13 at 1:00pm at church. We use the Lutheran women's magazine “Gather” bible study. Jim Preston leads a study Sunday morning at 9 am. He is a faithful leader, continued the meetings all summer. Well, done Jim!
Pastor Mark has what sounds like very interesting studies planned. Something about the Gospel of Mark through the lens of Star Wars! Crikey! Anyone and everyone is welcome to any of the groups. See you there. Any questions: contact Dixie Duehn, Education Committee Chairperson
Anticipating Fall Term. Summer is fleeting, fall is fast approaching. Here at Luther House all systems are ‘go’ as we prepare to welcome new and returning students, launch an exciting year of programming, continue our 90th anniversary commemorations, and anticipate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
College Student Names, Please. We really want to connect with students from your congregation who will be attending OSU, WOU, or LBCC this fall. First we want to welcome them to campus. Second we want to invite them Luther House. Third we want to give them a free “Welcome to Campus Gift Bag." Would you give us their name, phone number and/or email address so we can reach out to them? It’s easy to email us at [email protected]. We promise we’ll contact them. If students you know are headed to school elsewhere, you can use the Lutheran Campus Ministry referral finder http://lumin-networkreferral.org/sites/ to connect them. Thanks for your help!
Fall Football Parking Fundraiser. Will you or your friends be attending home football games in Corvallis this fall? If so, we're again parking cars ($10 donation suggested) at Grace Lutheran Church, corner of Kings and Harrison. You get a nice place to park – easy in, easy out – and you support campus ministry programming at the same time! Park four times, the fifth time is free!

The Spirit Awakens:The Gospel of Mark through the lens of Star Wars Starting Wednesday September 21
st
Dinner at 5:30 Bible Study at 6:00 The gospel of Mark was born in blood and fire. The earliest gospel of Jesus Christ, it comes to us from the ashes of war, as an empire struggles against rebellions in it's midst. In a time when all seems lost a new way and a new hope dawns on the horizon. This series is going to be a five week even-ing study where we use film to encourage discussion about some of the themes of the gospel of Mark. We will be gathering for din-ner (and there will be sign up sheets for din-ner) and then for an hour of study. I look for-ward to studying with you.

This study group meets on Thursdays in the late morning for study. They finished up last spring with a study about heaven. In Septem-ber we will gather to talk about Paul's epistle to the Philippians. Written from prison, Philippi-ans is one of Paul's later letters and is without a doubt his most joyful. As the Quail Run Group gathers this fall, we will be surprised by joy.
