Ophelia's Place sets up office on FLC campus In January FLC welcomed a new tenant to our educational wing, Ophelia's Place (OP). OP serves young women ages 10-18 through programs and services that are sensitive to the needs of middle and high school girls. The organization encourages young women to find their personal strengths, build self-esteem, and develop skills and resilience. The name, "Ophelia's Place," stems from Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, where the young Ophelia struggles to please her father, brother and boyfriend, and loses herself along the way. It's not so easy being an adolescent these days, either. In one way or another, every girl faces challenges. OP offers a safe and supportive environment for all girls and helps prepare them for the dramatic cognitive, physical and social changes that they encounter during adolescence. OP organizers emphasize healthy relationships and healthy choices. During the school year, trained Ophelia's Place staff provide classroom presentations for fifth through 12th grade, which includes everything from internet safety, conflict resolution, and media and body image, to sexual harassment and

healthy dating relationships. Presentations are delivered to girls and boys in a classroom setting. They also organize girl-specific "empowerment groups" that address friendships, peer pressure, communication skills, stress management and self-care. Check out their website to get the full scoop at www.opheliasplace.net. OP has been a successful nonprofit organization in Eugene for over a dozen years and made the decision to expand their reach north when an anonymous donor made a contribution to jumpstart the program. During the 2016-17 school year the organization provided groups for girls at West Albany High School (WAHS). So far this year, they are working with both Memorial Middle School and WAHS, and hope to offer services to others in the Greater Albany Schools. OP's Albany Youth Activities Coordinator, Celeste Yager-Kandle, is occupying room 17 in the educational wing. "Thanks for making this office happen!" says OP Executive Director, Verna Wise Matthews. Verna worked for both the Albany Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Albany Public Schools before leaving for Eugene a decade ago. "We are so excited to be in Albany, a very generous and open community." In addition, Verna was pleased to learn that Jackson Street Youth Services and the scouting programs are also on campus. These groups can interact with each other to enhance experiences for local youth. FLC still has space available in the educational wing. If you have ideas about other groups who might be interested, contact John Daniels. Many thanks for those who helped spruce up and prepare the space: Jon Aaberg, John Berg, John Daniels, Lyle Lambert, Wally Oster, Mary Sabatka Gamet, Nona Sabatka, Claus and Kim Sass. These folks donated time as well as materials to

New FLC secretary chosen
Even if you don’t know Nancy George well, you might know her as
Skyla’s Grandma: Skyla being the cherub with an infectious smile who
we are watching grow up (in the second pew upfront) on Sundays.
Nancy replaced Carol Olufson as the FLC Secretary in mid-January.
Carol accepted two part-time positions within the mid valley medical
community. We are grateful for her willingness to step up as a
‘temporary’ fill-in secretary – and remaining in the position for over
two years. Carol will continue to grace us with children’s sermons and
attend with her husband Conan and three children.
Nancy has been an active member of FLC for 18 months and serves as the head of the youth committee;
she coordinated the recent kitchen reorganization. However, she has been an active participant of the
Thursday study group for many more years.
Nancy worked for Hewlett Packard for nearly 15 years and was a supervisor within the ink jet test area
when she left the company because of a medical condition. In addition, she worked as a church secretary
for Holy Cross Lutheran Church for about a year and served on Thrivent Board for five years.
Educationally, Nancy attended Western Oregon State University in Monmouth for two years and has ad-
ditional business, math and speech classes from LBCC as an adult learner.
Shirley Karstens (a lifelong FLC member) is Nancy’s cousin; her mother Joan Bartz and aunt Esther
Kartens were both staunch members of FLC.
“I believe this position is a calling and a wonderful opportunity to be a link to our community and within
the family of Faith Lutheran,” says Nancy. “But please have patience as I learn how to fill some very big
shoes!”
The secretarial position is 12 to 15 hours a week and Nancy will likely be available Mon-days, Wednesdays and Fridays. Look for the regular office schedule posted soon on the office door.
Super Bowl Sunday is February 4th
FLY Youth’s Service Project (Fundraiser) this year will be to generate
and sell Brown Bag Lunches. Lunch will include a Ham/Turkey Hoagie,
Chips, Cole Slaw and a Chocolate Chip Cookie. All of this for only
$7.50! All proceeds are for FISH. Lunches will be available following
the service on the 4th.
Let’s Keep Our Kitchen Clean
It’s a new year, and the kitchen committee needs your help to main-tain the cleanliness of our kitchen. Last year, we had four teams of two, (two people each month) to perform a general cleaning of the kitchen. A new sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the kitch-en. If you are interested in taking on a month during the year, it would be appreciated.
Duties would include the following:
Weekly: wipe down counters, wash towels, and make sure that items left on counters are put away.
Bi-weekly: All of the above , scrub sink, wipe down appliances , and ensure that recycle is taken outside.
Monthly: Inspect fridge and freezer for outdated items. Discard them and clean up any spills etc….
This is not a huge time commitment as it only takes about 15 to 30 minutes a week. Please sign up if you are able.
A couple of Sundays ago, I gave a temple talk at the church service soliciting new helpers to volunteer for altar guild duties. At our last meeting, the current altar guild committee mem-bers adopted a procedural booklet to describe all the duties necessary for the preparation of the chancel, altar, and communion for Sunday services. We also adopted the idea that one does not have to formally join the guild committee to help with these Sunday duties :). We are looking for new folks who feel God’s gentle tug to help with these preparations and I, along with the other guild committee members, are willing to work with you to show you the ropes so to speak. It takes about one hour on Saturday to set things up and then about anoth-er hour to clean up after the service. You can sign up for the Sunday of your choice and if you find it fun and fulfilling you are more than welcome to sign up for multiple Sun-days :) You are always invited to attend the regular monthly guild meetings if you so choose, there is no obligation to do that with this new opportunity. Please pray about it and see if God is leading you to service for Him and your fellow congregants to provide for a meaningful Sunday service !!
